What a beautiful, soft voice, what a cute face and sweet smile! He carried the mediterranian sun in his heart , that is for sure. We had Caruso, Corelli, Gigli, Martinelli, DiStefano, Bergonzi, Schipa etc... Italia, where are your great sons today? The few with a beautiful voice are driven to ruination by the chase of the allmighty dollar, the demand to become exploitable plastique MTV idols, fast burning and exchangable, not allowed to be red blooded human beings with human flaws. What a shame!

I used to have this song on a 78 record sung by Beatrice Kay!! Sing Oh Sing Sweet Nightingale. I loved it. Had no idea it came from a musical, operetta etc.

The first opera star to record this song was soprano Alma Gluck on February 18,1916. She did it in English due to anti German sentiments at the time which would hinder the sale of the record if she did it in the original language. ( which she would have preferred.)This first recorded cover of this music sold 3/4 of a million copies. This Giuseppe De Stefano version is very welcome to me because now I can hear it in a higher fidelity recording.

This song comes from Lehar's operetta "Der Vogelhandler" (The Bird seller)Pippo sung lots of austrian operetta while he lived in Switzerland during his youth. I guess that's where this video comes from. In my next message, I'm posting the original German. The Italian translation follows them as closely as possible
