  • ONE OF MY FAVORITE TURBO GRAFIX 16 GAMES!!! I USE TO PLAY THIS SHIT LATE NIGHT UNTIL THE CRACK OF DAWN!!!

  • I for one hated the artistic changes in some of the music and characters, but it does play a bit better. There's a great PC remake floating around for the hardcore fans.

  • Ya know, believe it or not, Shion was kept in this port. If you don't believe me, look at the Japanese box art for Monser World II: Dragon No Wana for Game Gear. See a resemblance to Shion's human form on the cover and the main character of Dragon's Curse's human form.If you do, good job! That's an amazing but startling, yet obvious realization eh?

  • If you really are a nostalgic of Wonder Boy & Monster World videogames then I suggest you to visit my channel. There you will find a few promotional video and download links of a new fan-made and FREE Wonder Boy game called "Monster World RPG".

  • Pretty cool! I like the Alex Kidd paper, rock, scissors battle! I'll have to download and try it soon, thanks for informing me.

  • all the the bosses's room has background in this game?

  • yup. was the same on the master system version I had many years ago.

  • Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was my favourite game for the Sega Master System and so when I saw this obscure gem crop up on the Wii's Virtual Console I had to download it to see how it compared with the classic original.

It's brilliant, rather like a re-mastered or deluxe version of the original as the graphics are nicer to look at and the scrolling is much smoother. The music and sound effetcs are also rather more funky. Well worth the 600 Wii points to download! :-)

  • Must I remind you, that this game is actually pretty old, came out in 1991 on PC Engine.

  • Erm, no you needn't remind me - I already knew that. :-/

  • I have this game on my Sega Master System!

  • I had this game on the game gear and loved it to bits. The game that introduced me to RPGs and non linear platforming. This version looks aces, but the game gear and master system game will always hold more nostalgia value for me.

  • The Turbo has a bunch of other platform RPGs like this too. Blood Gear, Exiles, and the Legend of Xanadu games are some examples.

  • Mine's the only complete one though, haha

  • i am the biggest nintendo freak of all time but i must say this is one of the most addictive RPG games ive ever played. i downloaded it to my wii. a classic.

  • Definitely, this game is sheer classic.

  • I wrote the only FAQ on the internet for this game.

  • Haha, that's awesome. I just checked on GameFAQs though and there are two other FAQs too :( . Come to think of it, I think I might've used your FAQ since I beat it in April 2007, same time you uploaded yours.

  • This was by far the best game I played on the Sega Master System. It's a pity that not alot of people know about it. I think I'll have to re-play this now.

  • I need to pick up the SMS version and play through it. I've only played few minutes worth on an emulator.

  • true mate. i loved this game when i was a kid and couldnt wait to download it to my wii.

  • This game brings back memories!! It was one of the better games TG 16 came out with. Thanks for posting.

  • You're welcome and thanks for the nice comment.

  • on what console is that game??

  • This video is for the Turbo Grafx 16 version. It originally came out on the Sega Master System.

  • way better than the master system version, pity this port wasn't included on the sega ages ps2 compilation

  • Think i'll download this on VC...I love the original, but my SMS is pretty much done for, for example, you can barely see the colour red...

  • The TG16 version has numerous advantages over the original SMS version, but some still prefer the original. Either way if you're a fan of the game, you should definitely download it!

  • please keranu tell me what system is that game? playstation? gamecube???

  • It's for Turbo Grafx 16 (it's also available on other systems under the name of "Wonder Boy III on the Sega Master System and Sega Genesis, possibly more).

  • it's not for the sega genesis or another console rather than the tg16 and the sms

  • Whoops yeah, I must've been confused with Wonderboy V.

  • Never knew this existed,cool!

  • You should definitely check it out if you have a way to play it.

  • Could you maybe make a speed run version of this?

  • Would be fun to make, but I really need another hard drive to do any big captures like that. I might be getting one soon though, so hopefully one day I'll be able to, but someone else requested of speed run of Keith Courage so I'll have to do that first.

  • hawk man looks the same as the sms, but the other characters look different...pretty cool!

  • It's interesting to spot the character difference, especially how they change the lion (?) from the SMS version to a tiger in the TG16 version. I'm not entirely sure why this was done, my guess is it had something to do with licensing stuff.

  • I have this game its pretty cool

  • Damn right 8) .

  • I didn't realize that you'd uploaded this to YouTube already Keranu. :)

Meka is the mecha-dragon's name. Its where the SMS emulator got its name.

Dragon's Curse's title screen music is actually similar to the title screen music of the Game Gear version.

It wasn't released for Mark III(SMS) in japan, but the SMS carts still support FM music (although it sounds unfinished).

  • I usually upload my videos to YouTube just after it's done uploading on my website, but sometimes (like for Double Dungeons), it's the other way around. They're only minutes apart from each other when uploaded.

Is that's where Meka comes from!? I always wondered about the emulator's name and figured they used it because it kinda sounds like Sega (like "Feka") and was in reference to Mecca (Makkah), Saudi Arabia.

Thanks for all the info, Black_Tiger!

  • Cool I had no idea this came out in PC Engine too. It is weird how NEC managed to release Sega games without getting a big fat lawsuit.

  • There were a bunch of Sega arcade ports on the PCE developed by other companies like NEC Avenue; I'm also a bit surprised they got away with no problems since Sega was the contender back then. Dragon's Curse wasn't developed by Sega to begin with though, but I no next to nothing about legal stuff! :D

  • Even the NES has lots of Sega games. ;)

  • I have two possible theories on this. One would be that SEGA had granted permission to the companies to make games for non-SEGA consoles. The other is that the companies managed to be sneaky, and slipped the games right under them to be released on other consoles.

  • Since copyright laws supposedly work differently in Japan, as long as it was different from the way SEGA made it, they would be fine. Both theroies can be equally correct.

  • When I first heard about this game, I wasn't sure if the American version was Adventure Island or Dragon's Curse, since Adventure Island was released a year later and could've been the sequel to New Adventure Island. Then it hit me! Dragon's Curse was released in the U.S. sooner because there were some licensing problems in its Japanese release! SuperPCEngineGrafx has recorded an excellent soundtrack for this game. Have a listen.

  • I meant prequel! NOOOOO!

  • Japan really made things confusing by calling the Japanese version of this game Adventure Island!

  • So I guess it's not the prequel to New Adventure Island, after all. Who knows why they decided to give it that title since it has a little less to do with the game than Dragon's Curse. By the way, I think the title screen for Dragon's Curse is a lot more cooler than in Adventure Island.

  • I realy have no idea why they called it Adventure Island in Japan. I know this was discussed on the PC Engine FX forums before and there might be an answer there.

I actually prefer the Adventure Island title screen more myself, which is unusual for me since I'm usually pro-American :D . They're both really cool title screens though.

  • I could have a look, but it might be buried so deep that I'll never be able to find it. I guess for you, Meka standing before an island across a body of water makes a greater impression in your mind than two dragons standing beside the castle.

  • Oh don't worry, I was going to do the searching for that thread ;) ! I'll post any info I find here.

I really like how the Adventure Island title screen scrolls by like the Neutopia title screen and I also love the colorful text! Once again though, they are both pretty high quality title screens for their time!

Also is "Meka" the correct name for that character? I never knew that, I just always called him "HuMan" like it says in the game.

  • OK. Good luck with that. That may or may not be the name of the main character. I just saw that name on top of the soundtrack icon for Dragon's Curse on the SuperPCEngineGrafx music page, which has the subtitle of "Vengeance of Meka."

  • Ok I think I finally found the thread! pcenginefx(.)com/forums/index.php?topic=1150.msg9536#msg9536

I don't know for sure if this was the thread that I was thinking of, but it doesn't get as indepth as I remembered. It still has some other neat info though, like stuff about Nick Woods!

  • About time, Keranu. Thanks, and I'll go check it out soon.
