Im in a pipefitting class and i keep hearing how high maintenance pipe welders are. Is it true because i really dont like the idea of having to hold someones hand all day and keep them motavated?
@steveo1274 i have been pipefitting and welding for 28 years and its true that some welders can be very fussy in what they will accept for welding. this because when they do accept a fit up it they are then held accountable for the resulting weld. An easy way to solve this is look at the weld procedure and then produce a fit up that is within procedure specification and tolerances. this will satisfy both welder and inspector and you have a document to support the quality of fit up.
@speedy02 No such thing as walking to fast if your heat matches your travel speed . If your to to cold, then yeah. But you should be able to tell if you are. Maybe it's because I've been pipe welding for 36 years and it just comes natural to to me to go fast. I pass 100% x ray on a daily basis so I know what I'm talking about. Don't mean to sound arrogant. If I do then i apologize.
@CALI2TEXBOY thanks for the comment but its not that fast, just matching the high amps with high speed of travel. this just keeps the heat input down. plus we are in a asme u stamp bonus shop so the more you weld the more money you get. but if it fails the 100% x-ray you dont get paid for the weld.
Nice video! Can you tell me please, I'm Tig welder beginner, although I do have certificate but for plates 2mm, but I wanted to ask you how much time do I need to learn to weld walking the cup on the pipes? thanx
do you hold the torch any other way? maybe by the end cap? I am doing plate right now and my cord looks like it may touch the metal. Can I hold the torch upside down to keep it off the metal or just sideways? That weld is very nice.
@EYEZIC the way i am holding the torch in the video is the only way i walk the cup. the torches we use either have a flexihead or can be bent to suit (but only a few times) if you look in the video i wrap the lead around my wrist. this stops the pendulum effect from the lead and and keeds it away from the weld. when i rest the cup i use light pressure and not too high on thee amps to stop it skidding off . hope this helps.
theres no dude ! great welder". the mather is not who can do the same .... its who can learn from this guy!! expert welders , remember. one never stop learning from others or from experience!!
@javitroilo depends on your wps( welding procedure specification ). In two of the projects i have been involved, you couldn't go wider than three times diameter of your electrode. So cap welded with 3,25 max 10 mm for pass.
@petrica977 was your wps for smaw or gtaw? a standard for smaw is three times electode diameter whereas a gtaw procedure can include oscillation (especially for orbital) if you monitor heat inputs carefully you can exceed a 3 x filler diameter quite easily and still stay within standard procedures. i write procedures on a regular basis and i still weld daily even though i am a welding institute cswip 3.1 registered welding inspector (i will eventually move into inspection, when it suits me)
@weldtech1 true my welding teacher always tells us that we have to go uphill because if you go down it messes with penetration but sure does look pretty

I have to take my practical test at school tuesday ( modern welding, school of welding, Schenectady, NY) and Ive been watching these all day... I test out on my ASME next month, I missed the last one :(
Ill be doing my open root tig unlimited thickness test ( 1" i.d. 3" o.d. ) along with my 6010 root pass ( on sch 40, 6 inch cupons) and a stainless pipe test.
I was thinking of going with the 1" AWS cupon bend test, but I THINK my pipe test will qualify me... I THINK...
@loweyjay1980 cheers mate. always learning and teaching to others and never too old to ask! been wearing a screen for 27 years and feel i have loads to learn

I´m a noob tig welder and i have a question for you. Can we finish the weld with only one pass though it is very broad?
Sorry my english. Congratulations for the video !!!

@condombrokesorry i am travelling vertically up! look where the pool finishes and where the laid weld is.

do you feed the filler rod straight or side to side as the torch?
burningeyes101 1 year ago
@burningeyes101 the trick is to keep the rod centrally just in the edge of the molten weld pool. hope this helps
