  • Ha I was 10 years old and going to St Peter's in Cambridge !!

  • Does anyone know what channel Benny Hill was aired on on New Zealand? and when was the last time it aired on terrestrial tv? (not counting the ocasional repeats on skys uktv)

  • i remember when Kimberly taped TV1 signing off one friday night and that tape didn't used the national anthem that day. Talia is going to like my recording. Date Of Taping: around 1980 or 1981.

  • 8 October 1987 is the date of transmission.

That Friday night movie is so terrible it only rates 3 Google hits.

  • Wait...did I hear correctly that they wouldn't sign on until 10:45am?!? Wow.

  • It scares me to think tv didnt run for 24hrs. How barbaric. I'm glad I was born in the 90's.

  • @GrandTheftAutoNZ And there were no ads on Sunday up til about 1989.

  • I only saw this a couple of times ...... big late nights up as a little kid

  • in 1988, TV ONE switched it's closedown music from theme to The National Anthem sung in Both Maori and English, as seen in the Wikipedia information.

  • Now we have half a dozen free-to-air networks (without Freeview) and 24 hour television. All so we can watch Infomercials on every one, from midnight to mid-morning.

    Oh yay for progress.

    Anyone wanna buy a second-hand ab-builder???

  • Anyone have the TV NZ-1 signoff circa 1989 they could post. It featured the national antheme in Maori and English and had stunning scenery of the North and South Islands (I had it on an old PAL VHS, but it's unplayable).

  • @rockicesnow there are several uploads of this on YouTube

  • OMG! I suddenly feel so old!! Those were the days, we still paid a broadcasting fee, only had two TV stations, no ads on Sundays and they'd only broadcast for 24 hours if Telethon was on!

Thanks for bringing back the memories!

  • When the screen faded to black, wouldn't you hear a voice reminding viewers to swich off their TV sets?

  • This is how a closedown is done.

  • lol kaleidoscope! i remember that one...that sounds like lloyd scott doing the voiceover

  • It is.

  • Back on air at quarter to 11 in the morning??? My gosh! LOL!

  • I was hoping for a massive burst of tone and a test pattern!

  • My god, I have forgotten about this one and it bought back good memories of watching telly.

    Good stuff :-)

  • This was abit b4 my day haha

  • the 80s was great in nz for tv....used to watch it on an old phillips k9 tv

  • I remember after TV One closed down we used to get a still of the TV ONE logo with National Radio (as it was then) played over it

  • Prior to Mike Bodnar, the guy advertising the next night's programmes was Lloyd Scott.

  • Beautiful closedown tune. And forgive this ignorant Northerner, but it really grabbed my interest watching the moon rise at the end heading ANTICLOCKWISE - as of course it would do in NZ :)

See you at a quarter to eleven then!

  • dude... i love that theme tune. talk about old school!

  • It's one of those that you HAVE to play all the way to the end, isn't it?

  • it used to be.

now they just play tv 24/7. no closedown.

  • I remember that clock used to be played before the news at 6 as well.

  • Great sign off. So, I presume this kind of closedown was used on One after the Goodnight Kiwi was relegated to TV2 only and before the National Anthem film began use at closedown.

Who else did TVNZ have as announcers?

  • right now its 4mins to midnight so go to bed hahahaha

  • That golden 'ONE' against the light blue backdrop, been a loooooong time since I last remember that. [If I ever get married, have kids ect; how am I going to explain to them the feeling of only having 1 tv channel to watch?]

  • In reply to "123ratty67" the "goodnight Kiwi" is alive & well, he is at YouTube!

Sorry it took so long to reply, but, I just noticed this now.

  • And TVNZ is once again using him on Freeview's TVNZ 6 channel.

  • Good memories running threw me. The 1993 look makes me cry.

  • I remember tiny little bits of this from when I was a baby. Its great seeing the whole thing :) I vaguely remember the clock now :)

  • Back on air at 10:45am?

  • YEAH, what happened after closedown? Did you just get that multicoloured Test screen?

  • Great post, thanks.

I think we just got static? Better than 80% of the crap on prime time today.

  • Usually you'd get the multicolour test screen, or a clockface, in the very early eighties sometimes there was just static.

  • At last I can prove to my Yank wife that indeed tv did finish at midnight in the late 80's...

  • Sigh. What happened to Mike Bodnar? Does anyone have the wonderful closing of the Kiwi going to bed?

  • 1th march 1981

  • bloody marvelous! anyone got country calendar or dog show theme?

  • I have country calendar - u want?

  • thanks again Duncster for posting this, like I said on the Tvnz God defend Nz, excellent post, those were the days, sniff sniff hmmmmmm, cheers mate

  • wow! I remember it! well, not the closedown (well after my bedtime) but definately the promo at the finish - thanks for sharing another great piece of nostalgia!

  • What a terrific closedown!

  • Can I see What happened next please.
