Just when the Roman empire was down the crapper, Julius Ceaser was the great leader to defeat the long feared "barbaric" Celts. I don't really care for the ancient Romans but I do like Ceaser.
the irish celts took the heads of their enemies because they beleived it gave you the power of your enemy. They would put these heads over the doors of their houses to enpower their house and name.
Interesting ancient primitive society. Hmm but well then again the descentants of todays west and North Europeans commited ritual human sacrifises by burning people alive? They could kill each other for a piece of raw meat? Decoration and trendy surrounding with human skulls? No written language? Hmm I dont want to hear again then about primitive uncivilized Africans. Not even about the less advanced south med European people! I will answer with this video each time LLLLLLLOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL
It could have been their way to weed out criminals and those with handicaps. Back then, they couldn't build or support prisons for criminals, so if someone wouldn't obey the rules of society.....
I don't personally think that human sacrifice was as integral to ancient Celtic Polytheism as most people believe. Those that were sacrificed were often either criminals or war-captives from rival tribes. In the main, I don't think that individual Celtic tribes or kingdoms needed to placte the Gods in such a way all of the time.
I also regard the child-sacrifices of the Carthaginians as an overblown propaganda myth as well.
It's interesting how nations that practiced human sacrifice were usually stopped by empire builders such as the romans. they stopped the child killings from the Carthaginians and the sacrifices of the celts. The spaniards brought the aztecs to their knees and their mass sacrifices. God has a way of punishing evil doers with other war like people.
Killing people by sacrifice wasn't viewed as something horrible by the Celts, the Carthaginians, or the Aztec. Being sacrificed was usually an honor that lead to a favorable afterlife. Among the Aztec, being sacrificed was one of the few ways to get into one of the "heavens". Christians killed more people in the name of their religion, than any culture that sacrificed people did.
First of all, by definition a "Christian" would follow the life and words of Jesus who preached "love your enemy" and turn the other cheeck" He lived in peace and love and He died because He loved. Anyone who does the opposite of that can never be called a 'christian'. You're thinking 'Catholics' and some 'protestants'. Catholics are not christians by virtue of their distorted believes and actions. The nazis didn't think there was anything wrong with killing millions. it was still wrong!!
Jesus was a popular criminal, nothing more. He died because he pissed off the Romans and some big shot Jewish priest. Most of the things he did can be attributed to REAL deities from other religions. Osiris died and came back to life. Various Roman Emperors healed the sick by touching them. Jesus didn't do anything that hadn't already been done, if he even really did do any of those things. The Bible also says to stone men who shave and kill the children of sinners. Justify that, why don't you?
Yes, but didn't Jesus also say that he is not here to bring peace but rather division? And anyone who does the opposite of peace can be called a Christian because there are violent and intolerant verses in the Bible as well, such as saying that non-Christians are unrighteous and stuff like that, Catholics are Christians; that is a fact.
Islam has the title as champion for killing people in the name of God....don't bring the christians into this. Much of what is said about " christians" has much to do with CATHOLICS and the crusaders not full gospel lutheran believing christians.
Okay, I'll just generalize and say Monotheism, from the moment it began with Zoroastrianism and continuing on in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, has killed, committed genocide, and tortured people as its prefered form of conversion, all in the name of a "loving" god.
I would say that Zorostrianism is actually a pretty tolerant faith, for example they expanded into Buddhist Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Sassanids, but they never forced their religion upon the Buddhist Afghans or Pakistanis, Judaism is more tolerant than Christianity and Islam, because it does not proselytize, but you are right.
The older a religion gets, the more tolerant it becomes. In the beginning, Zoroastrianism was forced upon his subjects by a king Zoroaster converted. The Israelites killed entire tribes for worshiping a different god, so they aren't any better. Christianity and Islam are just plain evil. Stone men who shave is in the Bible and Islam says to beat women for the crime of being raped.
I never heard of Zorostrianism being forced upon his subject, plus that was the king, not Zorostrianism. I don't think that is true, that as time goes by, a religion becomes more tolerant, for example look at Islam. Christianity only has to act tolerant because of Western law and so forth, and I don't think I have ever heard in the Bible to stone men who shave.
I have googled it, and I honestly do not think that all forms of Monotheism, in particular Monotheism and Zorostrianism are intolerant religions, as for the Bible verses that tell people to stone men who do not shave, can you tell me where it is found?
@HoundofOdin Same logic used by suicide bombers. How else would anyone willingly sacrifice their own life unless they believed they would be rewarded in the after life for it?
@HoundofOdin You and I definately not on the same page. And your argument doesn't make any sense. The point I'm making is that suicide bombers use the same basic logic as people in ancient times when practicing _voluntary _ human sacrafice: A member of a group gives up their life to acheive a goal for the benefit of the group they are loyal too.
@SanFranGirl1982 Suicide bombers believe that killing lots of people along with them will help their organization achieve acheive their goal. The question my argument answers is this: Why would anyone WILLINGLY allow themselves to be killed?
@SanFranGirl1982 Why did soldiers in world war one go over the top when they knew that they would almost certainly be mowed down by a machinegun or blown to bits?
The answer is duty, or shame or even dedication to the cause, what people think of you and what you think is important can drive people through many things.
Of the Samurai and honor and duty it was said "Sometimes 10 men could not topple one man with such conviction"
@cultofmao Soldiers in WWI didn't know the machine guns and bombs would kill them so easily before they went over the hills. How can you put Samurai and terrorists in the same category? Suicide bombers are mainly uneducated poor people who got brainwashed into believing a warped version of their faith and their families also got paid to hand them over. A suicide bomber is guaranteed to die, a WWI vet and a Samurai stand a chance of surviving.
@SanFranGirl1982 I agree, but I don't think they'll be too pleased when they turn up at the pearly gates. Some research now shows that due to a translation error, instead of getting 72 virgins they'll be taking possession of 72 raisins! I almost wish there was an afterlife just so I could see the looks on their faces on being handed a box of California's finest shrivelled grapes!;)
Ha ha very funny all Americans keep going on and on about 40 Virgins, hell Christians believe a whole load of crap also, what difference will it make what they believe all that matters is who's belief will be victorious and i can tell you they will be there at the end, America thinks it can smash other cultures that do not agree with its shallow culture, well USA is the most recent invader and the blood letting has only just begun, will you still be laughing about virgins in 40years time.
@cultofmao It's raisins not virgins, and I'll be laughing at any unfounded religious claims for as long as they're around...and completely agree, 1 religion is as stupid as the next. And I concede that American foreign policy as been heavy handed and ill conceived at times to say the least.
That said I'm also completely opposed to a way of living which destroys free speech and demeans women daily as a matter of course. In 40 yrs or more..or less I'll continue to be opposed to fascism in any form.
@cultofmao We will most likely keep laughing about virgins. Because we're not that fearful of being invaded by terrorists. But who knows? Alot can change in 40 years. Islam might be America's new major religion. And plus we're, well.....Americans so we make fun of just about everything we please for the most part. :)
@shakama2 It's true. There are many tribes of Europeans that have ceased to exist, wiped out by Asians. Don't think it can't happen. History repeats itself, isn't that right?
ya right the romans also claimed christians were canabals, all propaganda as this may have been used to demonize celts but romans were so much better crucifying people right? lol
@Moe3214 Its not so different from what the tribesmen in New Guinea do, everything here in this documentary is true there is good evidence, for instance bog mummies and the wicker man also has good evidence. Why would you think anything bad about it?, as it was a different culture to today and a different age.
@Moe3214 Indeed, and the rom,ans saw themselves as superior, so they talk down about alot. but i also think they speak some sort of truth. they simply did not think "in 2000 years somebody is gonna read this and theyre gonna hate them celts!", all with a grain of salt.
I am proud to be Irish, we are a mixed ancestry like any modern nation, were made up from people who traveled from as far as from north assyria, greece, iberia ,galicia, cantabria, basque, pictland, im my opinion we are not germanic or saxon or norse, we are good and fought for freedom more than others
Ahh, the Anglos are the last migration to Briton. The Picts were the first, then the Manx later the Gaels. Anglos are the Celti Aryan Saxons, Irish are the Celti Aryan Gaels. We are with the same common ancestry. Study the city of Galicia, and you will learn we had an advanced kingdom previously. We lost our civilisation to a Semitic nation. The Erin peoples were the first in Greece. We were the Galatians, Kingdom of Troy, buy some history books and see for yourself.
the normans, angles, jutes et al may have colonised the place a bit but they didnt leave much in the bloodline and even so are all members of ancient germanic tribes.
the romans made the celts run after their lifes ,the romans will prevail as the most fierce and brave warriors from all times at the same time they were fair warriors and never lost their honour and dignity.when the roman legion marched every body hided.
I think it quite arrogant to look upon an ancient culture from a modern perspective and judge, for good or bad, the actions of people living in a time we cannot imagine.
The guy in this video is probably part italian himself. Some of this is not accurate the romans did not fight the celts, because unlike other people they fought the celts had everyone in the family involved in the war, and the romans did not want to fight an army with women in it. Not to mention romans, and greeks were brutal to. When greeks had wrestling matches during the games they often pulled the opponents heart out of their chest.
Well either the Romans fought the Celts or the Celts sent them a lovely letter inviting them to come and take over half of the British isles, guess Boadecia had nothing to be moaning about. And the narrator is English which is non-Celtic.
Untrue the dna of the people of the british isles has been studied by Sykes for years now and the people are overwhelmingly celtic-iberian and have been there since the neolithic period. There is only slight foreign admixture in England and its mostly viking ancestry [20%] AND north african roman soliders 10%.
The english are not non-celtic please read the work of brian sykes. The people of the british isles are overwhelmingly what they have been since the neolithic period - iberian! Our oldest ancestors are the basques and siberian kets.
the basques and the english have nothing in common. sorry but this brian, must have been under drugs to say that.basques are relatives of the ancient berebers tribes, who lived in north afrika
What the hell are you on about about? This is a well made, well researched programme. Being Welsh, I'm aware of our past, be it good or bad its still our history and we cant deny it.
Look at the background of the people who produced this discraceful misrepresentation of the truth and why they picked out the very unpleasent features of the Celtic world rather than the high culture items which we should all be taught in school.
They say the druids once passed a law that said the killing of children woman or men outside of combat was Wrong They then went forth to sacrifice a child and the child argued that law so well that they stopped the sacrificed altogether. not ownly that But Would you belive a man who killed over 100 men a day in the coloseum Oooh the barbarism of the celts its horrifying... i think ill fead another man to a lion today .. or make 300 slaves fight to the death

Andy I'm not trying to be smug, just factual. On the evolutionary scale of progress in human civilisation the Celts contributed very little compared with, eg Romans,Greeks. The Celtic legacy today is virtually zero.
?!?!?! That is totally incorrect and can be easily proven wrong by archaeological evidence! The Romans copied literally everything from the Celts and the Greeks. Nearly the whole armour and the weapons of a roman legionary where inspired or even just copied from the Celts. 30-40% of the modern German language is in fact "Celtic" and things like Trousers, Teeth brushing, Soap and very advanced metalworking techniques are only a few things that the Celtic culture contributed to our modern life!
Thank you, I'm glad there's someone here who knows their history......Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland remained Celtic and did not die out, in fact there are just as many people speaking a Celtic dialect now as there were 2000 years ago, further evidence of their continued influence in modern life, literature & art, among others....
Even the so called roman roads are in most cases in fact Celtic and the only thing roman on them are the milestones...
"Romans contributed so much to our modern world"? "They brought civilisation to Europe"!? Romans loved it to watch humans die in the most horrific scenarios in big Arenas!
Please read a little bit more before you post complete "rubbish" next time!
Actually, the contribution of the Roman and the Greeks on today's civilization is virtually zero. The celtics are what we are descended from. The Greek and Roman civilizations fell and we came from these Barbarians. Nobody wants to see it that way because it isn't romantic to think of it that way. But that's the fact of it.
Oh its you - you were trying to sound like you had a serious interest in History earlier - now you show your true colours! Are you totally anti-White in general or just trying to sew divisions between European folk? All cultures have stuff like this in thier past, try not to be so smug..
Here we go ones again with historians and archologist, that do not really tell all of the story. First of all : Why only mentioning the source of information of the enemy's of the Celts.. like the romans? 2. Druids and their different Grades.. The Ovates , healers, seers of the tribes (Great Britain) were using mostly the Ogham the Celitic tree magical tree alphabet and getting their "information for the future also through looking to the flight of the birds, ect.. HUman sacrifices ..
Bullshit!!! quater of a million. By now everybody knows that Ceasar (if it was even him) wrote Propaganda and he is on no account to be taken "serious" and I say this as an archeologist!
julius cesar was using neg. propaganda to discredit these ppl to validate his work in getting rid of them. His "religious" propaganda is highly suspect with not much proof on his side. The concept of an innocent man being put to death or a "willing" sacrifice (to make sacred) was a way to have a important person leave this world to be with the ancestors during a time of need!
Vercingetorix was kept alive by julius cesar for 7 years after being brought to Rome
they once hailed a "major archaeological find" of this "celtic" scafical alter, And they did for years, That was until Iolo Morganwg told them, He'd set them up, Because he knew they were looking for "anything european" to tag upon British History. And today they call him a "forger of history" because he tells the truth...
burning witches in Salem, Stoning women in the mid east, lynching afro-americans and homosexuals. the Celts were not special for their ritual death.

Untrue the dna of the people of the british isles has been studied by Sykes for years now and the people are overwhelmingly celtic-iberian and have been there since the neolithic period. There is only slight foreign admixture in England and its mostly viking ancestry [20%] AND north african roman soliders 10%.
katievhoneychurch 3 years ago
The english are not non-celtic please read the work of brian sykes. The people of the british isles are overwhelmingly what they have been since the neolithic period - iberian! Our oldest ancestors are the basques and siberian kets.
katievhoneychurch 3 years ago
the basques and the english have nothing in common. sorry but this brian, must have been under drugs to say that.basques are relatives of the ancient berebers tribes, who lived in north afrika

dna does'nt lie,the dna of the people of the british isles is nearly indentical to the basques.

What the hell are you on about about? This is a well made, well researched programme. Being Welsh, I'm aware of our past, be it good or bad its still our history and we cant deny it.

not really is it, they should emphasize the ifs and buts a bit more, lot of things are (very) uncertain

The Celtic legacy today is virtually zero.
britassh 4 years ago

Don't forget the Brittany region of France.

Even the so called roman roads are in most cases in fact Celtic and the only thing roman on them are the milestones...
"Romans contributed so much to our modern world"? "They brought civilisation to Europe"!? Romans loved it to watch humans die in the most horrific scenarios in big Arenas!
Please read a little bit more before you post complete "rubbish" next time!

yeah.... listen to those guys, numbnuts.

Thank God the Romans subdued these savages and brought civility to new parts of its growing empire.

Oh its you - you were trying to sound like you had a serious interest in History earlier - now you show your true colours! Are you totally anti-White in general or just trying to sew divisions between European folk? All cultures have stuff like this in thier past, try not to be so smug..

It's so funny when people hate a people based on what an enemy of that people says about them...ha
monzilly2134 3 years ago 2

I agree, that seems like quite a number..

julius cesar was using neg. propaganda to discredit these ppl to validate his work in getting rid of them.
