Gene's setup seems to have the hihat very very far away from the snare. he plays open-handed so I can see why this works. However, for a back and forth between the hihat and snare, surely thjis makes things impossible? You can see in your video - only bit you struggle with is the beginning snare to hihat rolls, and I do too!I wonder if that is hihat at the begninng. He uses two rides but, it seems, only one hihat. I can't find a live video of FF's that shows Gene playing at start of Powershifter
