  • You see, I love Hendrix, I'm not putting him down or anything. But I wish he'd put a little more variety in the songs he played live...For example, so many gems from "Axis" weren't ever played live, or hardly. This "EXP/Up from the Skies" is so good.

  • @dummytree Really the only thing that stopped that was his death. He wanted to expand the group form the restrictive 3-piece format since 1968 but his manegment prevented that to some extent becuase The Experience was the name that sold out arenas. In 1970, he was moving closer and closer to that and if he had stayed alive and been able to make more demands he maybe could have had that. Thats what he was talking about in his very last interview infact (9-11-1970)

  • my father saw him that year in sweden...

He said he was the craziest guitar player ever... he saw others to but... they didnt have one thing they have.... that soul and feeling for music....

he was the best guitarsit player ever he said and most craziest ever...

  • my father was there.. i wish i would :/

  • Jimi was Awesomely talented

  • The sound quality is horrible but i know this is because of the source. Does anyone know if there is a master of this that exist?

  • Supposedly, before Jimi was famous(during the Curtis Knight days), Jimi and Curtis had a UFO/Alien encounter while their car was stalled in a snowstorm in Woodstock, New York. Knight claims that an acorn shaped UFO landed several hundred yards away from their car and a "very tall being of some kind came out, and sort of glided towards the car". As the being got closer, all the snow melted and the temperature rose. Jimi and the being stared at each other, apparently communicating telepathically.

  • @NuclearHendrix

Where can I find more on this story?

  • @NuclearHendrix Where did you read and learn that ? Are you kidding ? I'd like to know more about it...

  • I was 11 years old when I first heard the studio version of this. It really messed up my mind! And now, almost 40 years later, I hear a live version!!

  • cool!

  • where can I find a studio version of this, online?

  • This is just absolutely amazing, James Marshall Hendrix created a masterpiece every time he picked up his beloved guitar.

  • @StratoBlaster420

Yepp! Jimi is still the Maestro in his field. And how I miss his chivalry and gentle manners in this world of brutes and brutality. Around these years 1968-70 we, then in our twenties, really believed in a world filled with love and music and no more wars... we were naive, yes, but in a good and generous way. Maybe we could afford to be so while there were not that many people on this earth!

  • WOW! I never dreamed that they did this "song" live! Thanks for posting ! !

  • One of my personal fav tracks, first time hearin it live and it blew my mind!

  • its at the wrong speed(too slow)excruciating to listen to but wish I had been there at the time he truly was the Guvnor...

  • Never knew this existed. WOW! Is all I can say. I believe Jimi is really "OUT THERE" and will be back one day.

  • kept waiting for the ...'b b b bu but I don't believe it' as Jimi flys off in his space ship

  • "Peace of mind is a quiet peace of behind. Is that yours I'm scratching? It sure ain't a piece of mine" - Jimi Hendrix

  • @TreyLutrash whats that from man?

  • @guitarguru333 I saw a picture in a magazine with that scribbled on a torn piece of paper. The article said Hendrix used to jot down stuff on anything he could find

  • wonderfull, just great that a recording of something like this exists, captured long ago to be posted on youtube for people to enjoy

  • brilliant

  • Holy shit dude this is blowin my mind! One of the greatist psychedlic guitar players of all time! RIP Jimi

  • January 8, 1968 -- the one and only live performance of this tune EVER. This is right at the top of the rarest ever live gems of his career. Jimi's character voice at the beginning is just fantastic. Just imagine him acting out all of the EXP effects and then just grooving straight into the first verse of Up From the Skies... Where are our damn time machines already?!?!

  • Man. Didn't know this was ever done live! Brilliant! I wonder if that's Mitch Mitchell doing the interviewer part as he did it on the actual record.

  • In case you don't know Jimi was very interested in UFOs (Read the book Alien Rock). He knew they were real and was not afraid to talk about it. Long Live Jimi Hendrix !

  • It's the only version I have heard of Jimi doing this. Wish he'd done other stuff off his albums such as Castles Made of Sand etc.

  • Hey were did you get that picture its very cool

  • We can only imagine...Had Jimi lived, going to a show and hearing him break out gems like this....

  • Wow... Would never expect such a performance from Hendrix... Very unusal of him to do a show like that!

  • never expected to hear a live version of "up from the skies"

  • yes indeed it is very unusual!!! iv been into hendrix a long while n never heard anything like this! its really fantastic!!!!

  • I never expected to hear a live version of EXP :D

  • hey buddy jimi is my master du

  • wow, I wonder if there are any good recording of this out there. This is obviously an audience member bootleg. somewhat painful to listen to.

    yet, amazing to hear.

  • We used to listen to this on the juke box at our pool club in the 60's. Never heard it live. Not a great recording but fun to hear!

  • I can't believe Hendrix and the band had the balls to do this live....!!

"Let's crank the gain up to 10, Noel...!!"

  • lol

  • @TheRealDerfMan why? what is EXP?

  • @TheRealDerfMan hendrix had the balls, talent, and the desire to present anything put on a record to pleasure anyone at a live show.I thank skuzgib for posting this, made my day today and the rest i am to EXPerience

  • i love this song, and up from the skies. its a real shame that passion and groove don't seem to translate from studio to stage. thanks for both postings, its the first time i've ever heard live performances of both songs. cheers!. they're not on the the box set, if you know which one i mean.

  • I see space people.

  • "Please Mr. Caruso, could you give us your regarded opinion on this nonsense about space ships, and even space people???"

    SKUZGIB...I think I love you.Got any Partridge

Family videos? Get it, "I think I love you", by the Partridge Family. Well...never mind.

  • For us, the owners of the original AXIS BOLD AS LOVE album, its really fun. Not only are EXP real rare in live gig, but followed by UP FROM THE SKIES as on the album is great.

Anyway, my mission here is to say (if someone didnt know) The actual concert from Stockholm January the 9th 1969 is out on dvd now.

WOW 305 (Way of Wizards) is the DVD-label, and there are additional livestuff from Swedish television on it.All in Black/White, but great.

    Have fun.

2-Show SET LIST, 1st SHOW: Sergeant Pepper, EXP, Up From the Skies, Spanish Castle Magic, Foxy Lady, Little Wing, Fire, Catfish Blues, The Wind Cries Mary, Purple Haze. 2nd SHOW: Sergeant Pepper, Fire, Hey Joe, Catfish Blues, The Wind Cries Mary & Purple Haze.

"And now if you'll excuse me, I must be on my way..."

  • Yeah, I wouldn't mind to get my hands on this recording.

But even better, I would like to get my hands on the Second Show at Konserthuset (Sweden), Jan 9, 1969, where I believe he performs the best live versions of Spanish Castle Magic and Hey Joe that I have heard. I think it was that show I had on tape sometime in the beginning of the -80s, but somehow got lost.

  • AMAZING!!!!

and all the sources say spanish castle magic and little wing were the only ones he played live :)

  • thanks.

  • Btw teh date is messed up in the video description. 1968?

  • that's the one ;)

    Changed it

  • the

  • Incredible!--I never thought that Jimi did this live!-Although it makes some sense-If you can find a monophonic copy of "axis: bold as love", it is considerably different from the stereo mix-it understates the psychedelia, and emphasizes the funk, comparatively.-=-=-=-WOw----cool, thanks!

  • yea you can get axis in mono from classic records (classicrecs dot com). Mono 200 gram audiophile pressing.

  • I'm not sure but this is probably the only live version of this number.
