You see, I love Hendrix, I'm not putting him down or anything. But I wish he'd put a little more variety in the songs he played live...For example, so many gems from "Axis" weren't ever played live, or hardly. This "EXP/Up from the Skies" is so good.
@dummytree Really the only thing that stopped that was his death. He wanted to expand the group form the restrictive 3-piece format since 1968 but his manegment prevented that to some extent becuase The Experience was the name that sold out arenas. In 1970, he was moving closer and closer to that and if he had stayed alive and been able to make more demands he maybe could have had that. Thats what he was talking about in his very last interview infact (9-11-1970)
but...but...but........that´s incribile!!!! live EXP....hendrix come from the space...we love you hendrix...thanks, for this.....thank experience, tanks noel, tanks mitch ...R I P.
Wow this is the real experience right here! The band that put all the psychedelic bands to shame when they were on it..You don't get that from band of gypsys or gypsys sons and rainbows,' or first rays of the new rising sun..So killer .!aH
his Guitarness is on His way very much on here. wow. first a freeform guitar trem job seguing in a very cool song & solo. only Jimi could get away with this.
Supposedly, before Jimi was famous(during the Curtis Knight days), Jimi and Curtis had a UFO/Alien encounter while their car was stalled in a snowstorm in Woodstock, New York. Knight claims that an acorn shaped UFO landed several hundred yards away from their car and a "very tall being of some kind came out, and sort of glided towards the car". As the being got closer, all the snow melted and the temperature rose. Jimi and the being stared at each other, apparently communicating telepathically.
I was 11 years old when I first heard the studio version of this. It really messed up my mind! And now, almost 40 years later, I hear a live version!!
Yepp! Jimi is still the Maestro in his field. And how I miss his chivalry and gentle manners in this world of brutes and brutality. Around these years 1968-70 we, then in our twenties, really believed in a world filled with love and music and no more wars... we were naive, yes, but in a good and generous way. Maybe we could afford to be so while there were not that many people on this earth!
@guitarguru333 I saw a picture in a magazine with that scribbled on a torn piece of paper. The article said Hendrix used to jot down stuff on anything he could find
January 8, 1968 -- the one and only live performance of this tune EVER. This is right at the top of the rarest ever live gems of his career. Jimi's character voice at the beginning is just fantastic. Just imagine him acting out all of the EXP effects and then just grooving straight into the first verse of Up From the Skies... Where are our damn time machines already?!?!
In case you don't know Jimi was very interested in UFOs (Read the book Alien Rock). He knew they were real and was not afraid to talk about it. Long Live Jimi Hendrix !
@TheRealDerfMan hendrix had the balls, talent, and the desire to present anything put on a record to pleasure anyone at a live show.I thank skuzgib for posting this, made my day today and the rest i am to EXPerience
i love this song, and up from the skies. its a real shame that passion and groove don't seem to translate from studio to stage. thanks for both postings, its the first time i've ever heard live performances of both songs. cheers!. they're not on the the box set, if you know which one i mean.
today is my 41st bday and this is the best pres i think ive ever gotten! thank you poster and youtube for bringing me so much diverse and unique hen the past coupla yrs... fantastic! fantastic...
For us, the owners of the original AXIS BOLD AS LOVE album, its really fun. Not only are EXP real rare in live gig, but followed by UP FROM THE SKIES as on the album is great.
Anyway, my mission here is to say (if someone didnt know) The actual concert from Stockholm January the 9th 1969 is out on dvd now.
WOW 305 (Way of Wizards) is the DVD-label, and there are additional livestuff from Swedish television on it.All in Black/White, but great.
JUST UNBELIEVABLE!!! I've searched for years for a live version of this and here it is - THANK YOU SKUZGIB! This is the ONLY time Jimi did this live, that I am aware of...
2-Show SET LIST, 1st SHOW: Sergeant Pepper, EXP, Up From the Skies, Spanish Castle Magic, Foxy Lady, Little Wing, Fire, Catfish Blues, The Wind Cries Mary, Purple Haze. 2nd SHOW: Sergeant Pepper, Fire, Hey Joe, Catfish Blues, The Wind Cries Mary & Purple Haze.
"And now if you'll excuse me, I must be on my way..."
Yeah, I wouldn't mind to get my hands on this recording.
But even better, I would like to get my hands on the Second Show at Konserthuset (Sweden), Jan 9, 1969, where I believe he performs the best live versions of Spanish Castle Magic and Hey Joe that I have heard. I think it was that show I had on tape sometime in the beginning of the -80s, but somehow got lost.
Incredible!--I never thought that Jimi did this live!-Although it makes some sense-If you can find a monophonic copy of "axis: bold as love", it is considerably different from the stereo mix-it understates the psychedelia, and emphasizes the funk, comparatively.-=-=-=-WOw----cool, thanks!
That was Gorgeous, too bad there isn't a better recording.Never knew he actually did that live,he cared .Hope theres More album filler " live " songs out there ????
