@auggiej1 Those are not M1s. They are in fact M14s. They're easy confused as the M14 is descended from the M1 but if you look at the end of the barrel you will notice that these rifles do not have a gas cylinder (it's a large metal tube) underneath the barrel. That identifies them as M14s; there are other differences but they're harder to see in a video this fuzzy.
@auggiej1 The M14 uses a detachable box magazine. Since the Sentinels do not carry their rifles loaded, there's no need for a magazine to be inserted in the rifle while guarding the Tomb.
How typical that the two people were told to remain standing were women and that the last woman was obese. Says a lot about dis-respect to our military who fights for our freedom from those two arrogant women. Can't stay standing for 10 minutes? How sad. Lay off the fast food and go to the gym!
I wonder which ones are badge holders out there. this is a very sloppy guard change. Popcorn galore and the blouse is loose. Surprised the relief commander posted him. I would have sent him back down.
The reverence these guards show towards this honorable privilege of protecting the remains of the unknowns brings tears to my eyes. It represents our military at it's best and those who are fortunate to witness this exhibition must respect the importance of this display. God bless these specially chosen men! And God Bless America.
for example, when the changing officer checks the rifle and uniform, I (personally, mind you) think that it should be done "realistically", effectively, i.e. the best that the real thing can get - that means fast and real. He should REALLY check the guard - of course he will be immaculate, but this exaggerated scrutiny looks odd. The army rituals are mesmerizing just because of that - BECAUSE THEY'RE AS EFFECTIVE AS IT CAN GET. They're worn down to a bare minimum of motions.
this change of guard is rightfully ritualistic, but it seems too much exaggerated. it's just my opinion. but they've gone too far from real change of guard, to the point where they resemble clockwork robots, not fighting men. I don't mean to offend, but I'm gonna watch our change of guard (also the unknowns), ie in the Kremlin - I think it is more resembling the actual change of guard made solemn and meaningful. I'll try to compare =))
I simply cannot believe what posts are being posted. The first Guard is not alowed to leave until the second is sworn in so there is a guard there 24-7 and as far as the Rifles they holding are the M-14 they do not fall apart even through the motions the guards put them through. . For the respect, it is the duty of the Civillians to keep quiet so the service can be made in Honor to the fallen Men and Women who have bravely served this country. It's a shame that this has to even be said.
Two things: It seems like they spend more time changing the guard than guarding it, and I am surprised none of those rifles fell apart with the constant swinging and tapping. :P
As a former vet if you are going to record and post the “Changing of the Guard” please use so common sense and use a tripod and don’t be breathing so hard that we hear it on the recording. TOTALLY UNEXCEPTABLE AND DISRESPECTFUL, what part of remain standing do these people not understand!!!
@dsimmonstx why dont we extend that and say that you need to have atleast a 15+MP DSLR and the best lens on the market. cant afford one? GET A FUCKING JOB
@SantiagoJuanita from Wikipedia: During the day in summer months from April 1 to September 30, the guard is changed every half hour. During the winter months, from October 1 to March 31, the guard is changed every hour. After the cemetery closes to the public (7 p.m. to 8 a.m. April through September, and 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. October through March), the guard is changed every two hours until the cemetery reopens.
I'm going to D.C next month to attend some seminars at the United States Institute of Peace. I was there years a few years ago in High school to go to the Holocaust museum but never got to visit any of the landmarks. We are suppose to next month during this trip that lasts 4 days, I would be beyond honored to witness this not just because it's amazing to watch, but because it was something I wanted to do but didn't get far in bootcamp because of an old knee injury that woke up.
@nubbie1944 ...continued......To this end the guards, once it is dark enough that they can not see from the mat to the rails which define their post, will remove their glasses so they can continue to perform their duty of guarding their post. Once it is so dark that this measure is no longer effective the guards change from dress blues into the duty uniform (now ACUs) so that they may break ceremony and patrol along the inside of their perimeter.
@nubbie1944 The sentinels who guard the TUS do wear their duty uniforms at night. The reason being is that the purpose of the guards IS NOT to provide a show for tourists but rather to pay respect to, and to honor the Unknowns and all the fallen they represent; additionally they serve as a living personification of the slogan "never leave a fallen comrade." ..... to be continued....
I think this is pure dedication i am British and I purely have nothing but Honer and Respect for these men and i feel it is a disgrace to sit down or to talk or to jump over the fence people like that arn't clever ther just idiots and disgraceful at that
I'm not sure why people have to compare us to other countries and say we need to do what they do... this is THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and we do it our way. This is an honor to watch and i am so thankful for those who have givin their lives so i can live in freedom!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why can't they just get on with it, rather than give a fucking spiel. Learn something from Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, from the Guard and Household Cavalry
honestly how disrespectful. not to follow the guidelines of respect, for the tomb of the unknown soldier, changing of guard. people shouldn't go there if they dont know the proper conduct, the soldiers are not doing it because its a nice to see, but its out of respect and honor. im only 18 and im deeply moved by the dedication of these men. sorry but its a big embarrassment, some one could be so disrespectful. fucking cunts.
Proud to be an American. The guards have a tough life, they take this service very personally and patriotically, those people who were told to stand should be ashamed of themselves.......
It is a sad thing when a person, let alone TWO people have to be told to stand up. We should always remember to respect those who have died for our freedoms. The least we can do is stand out of respect. These guards do it voluntarily. If you can't show the respect that is deserved, then don't attend this ceremony.
C/MSgt Penman, North Dakota Wing, United States Air Force Auxillary,
just a little information on the ceremony, the guards are changed every 30 minutes during the summer and every hour during the winter and this video appears to be during the winter do to the long coats that the Sentinels(Tomb Guards) are wearing
amazing thank you for sharing...the two women who had to be told to stand should have been thrown out as soon as they were done with the changing of the guard..
It burns me up inside that people have no respect or honor to stay standing in a ceremony that honors those that have gone before us and gave their life for our country...truly shameful.
@JediBerserker I think it was just ignorance of procedure, I don't think they were sitting to dishonor anyone. Sometimes it's just a case of people being dumb, nothing more, nothing less.
@b46424 Thing is the SOG told everyone to remain standing during the ceremony when he first came out. And even after he told the first lady to stand up you would think that the other one would've figured it out by then. People are just dumb.
It's honor, respect and dignity. You stand there or you don't go. These soldiers guard through the sleet and the snow and the rain, all in honor of all fallen soldiers.
I am leaving with my family tonight to attend my late Grandfather's funeral at Arlington tonight. We're driving up from North Alabama. It was what he wanted the most, and we are all honored, though saddened, to attend.
As a WW2 Vet and POW, he deserves this honor. I don't want it to read wrong that I am excited to attend a funeral, but this is what my Grandfather really wanted. It is a total honor to be laid to rest anywhere at Arlington. Best to all fallen soldiers' families.
Wow, what kind of person would not want to obey an order to stand given by such an intense looking pair of guards? The woman probably never sat down again until the ceremony was over.
@antonio1972lopez I love how they call these retards out about standing up. Its about respect and honor. Not making yourself comfortable to watch some random ceremony.
that is the truth and that is what is wrong with people nowadays alot of them don't care about respect or honor anymore if I was there I would proudly stand
How amazing. I get chills just watching this. These veterans deserve all the honor and respect we can give them. They are the reason this country is here and we have all the freedoms we have.
