  • I fucking love that drum beat!

  • So how much of this video got edited out? I would absolutely love to see the rest!

  • Lopeth.

  • @TripleFermentation Sorry, I meant 16th notes are being played with his left hand and bass, not 8th notes

  • @Bearthoughts This is a common misconception. You are correct in that he is playing 8th notes with his right hand, but the notes his left hand and bass are playing are 8th notes that are grouped in 3s (at the end of the pattern); they are not triplets, which is what the other person I replied to was saying.

  • @TripleFermentation, you know, I've been listening to the beat again and been trying to replicate it again and what I said didn't feel or sound right. I did ironically manage to recreate the right feel and sound but I can't really explain it yet. You may be right but there's something that's off about what you describe too (or maybe I'm interpreting it wrong).

  • I want to learn to play drums just to play THIS SONG !!!.....THE BEST OUTRO TO A SONG EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • who the fuck could dislike this video?

  • @virilevocalist a fucker who doesn't understand the beat, neither music ;)!

  • Why did you leave Lopez, whyy!

  • Comment removed

  • @BenjaminProd Although I'm sure you know this, the notes you are referring to are not "triplets". I just want to clarify that to the people here, in case they are confused. | x B B S x B B S | x B B S x B B S|

  • @TripleFermentation, I don't know what BejnaminProd said, but if you're talking about the ending of the beat he's playing 8th notes with his right hand and 8th triplets with between his right foot and left hand ( bass bass snare) and then plays it a little differently on the snare at the very end (plays it on the last hi-hat note of the beat)

  • Someday id like to be this coordinated. So badass

  • Pretty creative....

  • My friends thought that this was easy for me to play. Quoting the first comment on this video. "that shit aint easy."

  • Blast beats are the best thing that has happened to Opeth.

    BRING IT.

  • favorite drummer...and thats a bassist saying that :) it would be like playing with one b.a. metronome playing with him :D

  • this is definitely not the hardest opeth drum part. I agree it's not easy, but i could do it after a few minutes. a good drummer should be able to play this pretty quick, unless he's only been focusing on his double bass the whole time :p

  • took me 2 months to learn this part on drums, by far the hardest opeth drum feature

  • @KoreshXIV not really... the other parts are harder... this part was easy for me to learn... just the jazzy soft parts where the hardest

  • Martin Lopez made metal seem really groovy and tasteful. No blast beats or cheap fills!

  • well i'm a happily metrosexual dude but i'd admit i'd be happy to have lopez's babies - mind you it'd be a bit painful when they popped out with a pair of drumsticks in their hands

  • this sounds sooo coool

  • I've said this in the past and I'm sure I'll say it again, but might be worth repeating.

It always sucks when a good member has to quit, no matter the reasons it just plain suvks. When Nordin left Opeth and Lopez took his place it sucked, Lopez proved to be the perfect fit though so it turned out well. Now Lopez left and Axe took his place, and once again it sucks.

Give it another record or two, I'm sure good things are ahead. Lopez was awesome but enough whining damnit.

  • this shit is so tight! awsome drummer!

  • Yeah, Axenrot rocks, and all that stuff. I totally agree.

Still, Opeth had reached everything it was meant to be by Ghost Reveries, and Watershed is way far from that.

I love Watershed, it's actually the album that got me into Opeth... But, Ghost Reveries is perfection. It's a shame Lopez had to quit...

  • @EnriquePage91 Still Life is perfection. Morningrise is perfection too. Deliverance is 99% perfection. Ghost Reveries isn't. Watershed just has one good song (for an Opeth album).

  • @postigaceltic

agreed. last two albums were solid albums but when a band puts out 7 masterpeices in a row...I was expecting more.

  • @CannibalCorpse909 I think it's gonna be hard to reach that level again; or maybe people now are always expecting Opeth to reach that level, and get disappointed no matter how good their new stuff is. For new fans, the new stuff is perfect, because they don't really know the old songs, so I see their point, because the new songs are very good too.

  • Comon, what's so hard about this rhythem.

Besides, on 'Roundhouse Tapes', Axe plays this song perfectly.

    All you whiners... pfft.

  • @Thystonius They didn't play Deliverance on the Roundhouse Tapes. Perhaps you mean lamentations?

  • @Thystonius

What's so hard in this? Nothing if you can do it. If you can't, it's insane. I'd like to see a drum video reply from you playing it. Nothing's impossible, you see.

  • @VienBaf fine, rephrase it to "advanced" instead of hard

  • Comment removed

  • Best fucking riff EVER!

  • @IcoTheBest

i agree 100%.....it may just be the same note over and over again but its killer

  • Aguante Uruguaaaay!!!! I love opeth!

  • Why the fuck do people hate on Axenrot so much!? He is a fucking great drummer. Maybe not as good prog drummer as Lopez, but still. And if it had not been for Axe there would not been any Opeth today... Mikael and the the rest said so in the Watershed DVD their self!

  • @YetiLovesMetal

yes,....people need to understand sometimes a band needs to make a change like this to move in a different direction. In my opinion, the direction that opeth is moving in is awesome.....now with axe its a new twist and i have loved every bit of it so far.......the lotus eater and hex omega are exactly what im talking about......most people that dont listen to opeth regularly might not even know that hex omega is opeth and i love that

  • Lopez left Opeth because of his health, I don't know why all people are doing is talking shit on Axe. He has really done a commendable job of replacing one of the best drummers in metal's history.

  • @thelentzinator i didnt realise people were shit talking axe, i love his drumming, hes the only replacement in opeth that i was ok with, i like martin and axe about the same, i kinda miss martin but axe kicks axe....the new guitarist and keyboard player on the other hand i do alot of shit talking towards those guys...i hate them

  • @rebootenzo9 Really? I love Akesson, he's a far better technical player than Lindgren was. But I do agree he doesn't have nearly the stage presence that Lindgren did, he and Mikael together could control the entire stage.

And as for Joakim replacing Wiberg... We'll see, but so far I'm disappointed as Wiberg is one of the best atmospheric keyboardists out there IMO.

  • Deliverance is one of those songs that wouldn't have sucked bad without Lopez, but you can clearly hear that he shaped the song. Can you imagine what Axentrash would have came up with to play over Deliverance? It would have been a catastrophe.

  • Lopez and Peter should have never left Opeth , THE OLD LINE UP WILL ALWAYS AND EVER BE THE BEST!

  • @mathieulebum Yes, I agree 100%. I've been into Opeth for 12 years, for me it's Mikael, Peter, Mendez and Lopez. No Per Viberg live please.

  • axe isnt bad....i just prefered lopez's groovy drumming....sounds more suitable to what opeth plays to me....since they are so progressive and innovating in theyr playing....martin sounded like he was making a dancing improvisation the whole fuckin song and sounded badass

  • i could watch this vid in a loop for a week and still not get bored with it<3

  • Opeth isnt the same without Martin Lopez, his drum playing is just out of this world, axe will never play anywhere near as good as this guy used to play...ALL HAIL MARTIN LOPEZ!!!!!

  • yeah it sounds like 4/4 to 6/8. almost got it down, I lose it with the alternating chinas though...

  • @EarlMcCrackin martin plays a lot on 6/8 so it could be that xD

  • jus learned how to do this today.not too hard once you get your head around it.fuckin badass

  • @randomusername27 i LOVE to play this thing on drums! once you got it, it ain´t that hard to play, just like you said!

Everytime i play drums, i´m warming up to this song! =)

  • @speckon

like fuck its not hard to play hahahah ive been trying to perfect this for like 3 years now haha

  • Axe is awesome as well people.

  • Absolutely a beatiful peace of music. Just learned to play this outro on drums. :)

  • i love martin and his fucking china symbols

  • I freegin love lopez. I give up trying that beat after about 4 seconds each time bahaha

But I still enjoy axenrot just as much. Akerfeldt and the rest of them, being the musicians that they are, have changed Opeth's tone with the entrée of a new drummer. Thus I find it really hard to compare the martins considering they're playing in two completely different Opeths. I love what axenrot has brought to the band but I also cherish what lopez has done.

  • actually that isn't very hard if you play it a while, but martin always had his groove in his playing which makes him so unique.

  • I had originally liked Lopez less than most drummers i enjoy because i felt that he was often too simplistic and did not explore enough. Boy, was i wrong. This. Is. Amazing. \m/

  • Axenroth is really good, maybe technically better than Lopez, but Lopez was more special. Axe sound more like a plain metal drummer. Lopez was unique!

  • im sad that axe will never do shit cuz his damn stiff

  • wait P3treos u said 8 actually its 6 if your an opeth fan you should know and Lopez is the Bestest drummer Opeth will have cuz axe dosent know what he is doing

  • Axe is a fantastic drummer. Maybe not as good as Lopez but he's damn good enough for Opeth.

    All these comparisons are useless.

  • Actually Axe plays opeth songs just as good as Lopez.... and calm down guys Axe has been in Opeth for 1 album while Lopez has been with them for, like 8?? We will see who is better in the future...

  • They can also check out Bloodbath and see his talent.

  • Axe has AIDS so i dunno what to do now.

  • where u got this information from?

  • Martin is trillion miles better than poor Axe

  • Oh come on, Axe´s first name is Martin too. And yes, Martin LOPEZ is much better than Martin AXENROT.

  • axe is fuckin amazing. lopez is good but doesnt touch axernot

  • Axe & Martin Lopez are both bloody great drummers, but IMO Martin was a better drummer for Opeth. But FFS! That doesn't mean Axe sucks!

  • Seriously, Axe is fucking ridiculous in Bloodbath. I think he is a great replacement for Lopez. I think all Opeth fans enjoy Lopez more, its almost ridiculous to state it.

  • Blastbeats haven't been in Opeth for ten years, who cares if this dude (axe) can do blasts at 250bpm? Martin was opeth's baby, and it doesn't sound right without 'em.

  • @EmbodiedDespair cmonnnnnn yeah it does. they are still fucking great

  • @EmbodiedDespair Axe is good but martin had better grooves then him.

  • @EmbodiedDespair seriously, man, he does blasts on ONE song. Axe, in my opinion, has a much better feel for the drums and uses much less cliches. Don't get me wrong, I REALLY love Lopez's work on Ghost Reveries, but I think that Watershed has the best drumming Opeth has ever had.

  • @zeppelinman4232 All matter of opinion of course. Axe is great, solid replacement but unfortunately that's all I hear at this point. Bet he's the nicest of dudes, there's just not really anything memorable about his playing to me. Lots of repetetive fills, and a little too heavy handed and seems to lack Lopez's little accents he threw in there. Great death metal drummer, but I don't really consider Opeth a death metal band in that respect...Anyway maybe he'll develop more on new albums.

  • @EarlMcCrackin dude that's totally cool I can respect what you're saying. What I prefer about Axe is that I love his flow and he does things a little more out of the blue from what I'd expect. I can see a lot of Lopez' latin patterns coming from a mile away, and it's doesnt make him a bad drummer but I guess it's just a matter of phases. A few years ago I probably would have preferred Lopez. Another thing that may be biased is that I love ghost notes and he uses them to tie fills together often.

  • @EmbodiedDespair I totally agree with you mate. :D 1 thumb up for ya.

  • @EmbodiedDespair Uhhhh?! Yes indeed, who cares!!!!!!!! The album Watershed is among the best of Opeth!!!

  • @willidub1 can't argue that one.

  • @willidub1

    Wathershed rocks!

  • Lopez cant be compared Axe=Sux!!!

  • AXE is great otherwise he wouldn't play for opeth , so cut the crap...Lopez is also a great drummer do not compare...

  • AXE IS AN AWFUL STIFF SHIT PERIOD.

  • Martin Lopez is God in Drums

LOPEZ IS A TRILLION BETTER THAN AXE

  • Simple Axe Sux

  • Hate to drag this on, but I've never really seen Lopez struggle with their harder stuff live. There's a video of them playing Godheads lament years back at a festival and hes just killing it...I only mention this because some make it sound like Lopez struggled with the material or something, pre panic attacks or whatever...And I don't really think blast beats fit Opeth, but thats their choice, not mine...

  • axe is on fucking fire, he has the strongest fucking blast beats. hes quick as tits.

he chops so hard all the time.

lopez even said himself in modern drummers 2004 issue that he disliked playing live with amon amarth as it was too physical. he likes to relax.

axe on the other hand is a rabid beast who charges shit through walls.

the band really just needs both drummers at the same time, with a crazy percussionist to smooth out the transitions between them.

  • STOP FUCKING COMPARING AXE AND LOPEZ ALREADY!!! This stupid discussion is driving me and many many other people crazy. FUCK! They're both very good and also very different drummers.

  • Axe in not a bad drummer at all, but, compared to Martín López, Axe is stiff and squared. Martín knows how to make the music flow and his subtelties were special. Axe is good, don´t take it wrong, but Matín grooves!!! Any way, I love OPETH no matter what!!!

  • lopez is just genious for what he has done for opeth and was just great at doin his choice of style

  • I don't give a fuck I like Latinos

  • better than who???

  • Axe is a sad ordinary deth metal drummer

  • very unfortunately yes, Lopez could add some flavor to Opeth but since the music is dominated by Mr Akerfeldt, leave of Lopez did not affect that much..

    but Lopez >> Axe anyday..

  • axe does blast beats

  • which doesnt even fit Opeth

  • Martin Lopez is a Multi-style Drummer

  • Jazz, Deth Metal, Latin Exotic

  • i luv it

  • that shit aint easy.

  • @CannibalCorpse909 It is easier to play than it looks. It took me like 30 minutes to figure out what the fuck he was doing though. But yeah, this isn't a beginner drum beat.

  • @CannibalCorpse909 For Martin Lopez It Is xD

  • @CannibalCorpse909 That shit is easy.

  • @CannibalCorpse909 Yeah actually it's not that hard. It's straight quarter notes.

  • Brilliant song, brilliant drummer, Opeth is just tremendous

  • Is he playing 32 notes on the bassdrum? Sounds like 6-8 hits? correct me if im wrong.

  • I mean on the double pedal

  • not 32, 16th notes.

Well, if you count his hats as quarter notes.

  • God I love this outro....I could put this section on repeat and listen only to it for like months :D

I have stopped seeing comments about Axe live, so maybe he's gotten better since I saw them live but I remember noticing that it sounded like his double bass was very inconsistent on songs like Master's Apprentices and such, but that may have been the audio. But then I saw other people saying the same thing. *shrug* Just a thought.

I need to see them again. :D

  • so much evil energy, i love it

  • Axe is great, but there's no way he could suit better in Opeth than Lopez.. Most of these type of bands only find one drummer that can fulfill their desires the way Lopez does with Opeth

  • His drumming puts my bass playing to shame.

  • Are you kidding? If you listen to a lot on Watershed, I think his groove is pretty apparent during the slower funky/jazzy interludes of most of those songs.

  • Yeah, agree! AND Watershed contains death metal elements that Lopez never would have nailed. Like the death metal parts in Heir Apparent, The Lotus Eater, Hessian Peel.

  • I'm sure he could. He used to be in Amon Amarth, and he did just fine on Deliverance and Ghost Reveries...Lopez is a death metal drummer. But he gone so...

  • @DanielAbbasi07

this comment smells like a brainfart

  • It's all a matter of taste. Of course, don't get me wrong, I simly love what Lopez did for Opeth and he will remembered till the day I die. But i prefer Axe, and that's just a matter of taste

  • A question for the drummers here: what's the time signature of this piece? Just my curiosity!

  • 4/4, otherwise known as common time. He's just syncopating the hell out of this beat, meaning that he's displacing the accents off of where they should be normally. Hope that answers your question.

  • 4/4, though the intro and the first acoustic break are in 7/8

  • 4/4. It just has unusual accents

  • beats my my guess a 4/4

  • yep i agree, but i miss lopez =(

  • i miss lopez too :((

he had unique ideas... axe is more technique and stuff...

  • Mucha respeta. One of my favourite drum beats of all time. I used to think the Blister Exists was cool too, but don't listen to Slipknot much anymore...not saying they're shit, just that there are much better bands...like Opeth!

  • Wow I think its the first time I hear him out of beat :P still my idol for sure... no doubts about that... he is so good :S

  • i'm pretty sure that's on purpose

  • hey we tienes toda la rola completa en otro video??

  • Martin Lopez is too good man. Just too much talent. It's a real real shame he had to leave opeth thats forsure. I also feel bad for Martin Axenrot because it's nearly impossible to fill in Lopez's shoes. But Axenrot is also amazing without a doubt

  • ur a wanker

  • You should your title, you are called a prick

  • the current drummer when i saw opeth live in the summer... missed out the last beat in the loop... everytime. It really put me off enjoying it.

  • I guess he must have practiced this one coz I saw them last night in melbourne and he nailed the whole thing perfectly.

  • I've seen them again since i wrote that comment, he did it much better this time around ;) THANK GOODNESS!

  • i love this drummer :)

  • I love the sound of china cymbals.

  • His drumming is outstanding. Though its very sloppy here.

  • one of my favorite drum beats of all times. So good.

  • lopez is a legend

  • siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick ass outro omg!! It's sad that he had to leave Opeth but I do beleive Axe is doing a good job. You have to respect the guy, being a drummer in Opeth is very demanding and jumping into the band like he did would not be easy.

  • it sounds so freaking awesome, I play often that part myself, too.

  • lutfish!!!! I agree!

  • when he goes for the two symbols, i swear there is a third arm there,

  • i see it too!

well i guess we've unraveled the mystery of why martin lopez is so good...

  • Best metal drummer along with dave lombardo

  • Comment removed

  • one of my favorite skin basher!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Get your mind out of the fucking gutter for once. We are talking about a gr8 drummer here.

  • Comment removed

  • Thats assuming you get laid ever.

  • no words to describe how great this outro is..

  • i knoooow man

  • Well said ke812. This has to be my favorite passage in music so far. Such a nice riff.

  • One of my favorite Metal Drummers of al ltime!

  • For sure not the same without Martin Lopez. He can fuckin' drum man!!

  • opeth is not the same without lopez :(

love this part of the song

  • Fuck he's good, i love Lopez.

  • this is hardly the most advanced drumming due to what hes doing. but it is intence and sounds amazing i love this beat.

  • i'm not a drummer... someone tell me if this is insanely hard or what because the timing seems pretty tough.

  • I'm not a drummer neither; my friend here is, and he says that this thing lopez's playing is very difficult and it's one of the most advanced drumming techniques because each body part is playing different rhythm patterns.

  • thats the point i love about his style and many people still say axe is better just becuz hes faster!...its still opinions though...but i consider lopez MUCH better with his jazzy styles ^^

  • Yeah man, it's called feel. Lopez contributed a lot to Opeth. In a way, I think this song was almost written by him. I find it gets a lot from the drums.

  • this song is good and its not the best example of his style so u can just imagine how a song could be when he puts it all in

  • one example i like about what ur sayin i found like for example in windowpane song...the songs is smooth and slow and still has great technique

  • It's simple until he rides the two different cymbals. When your hitting both cymbals and playing a complex beat pattern like that, your mind tends to try to focus on hitting the cymbals correctly instead of just focusing on the beat. It's easy to play with practice though.

  • in response to zdl btw

  • cool to see this. and it's from my favorite part of the song, no less...

  • So much great playing comes out of the europe

  • Very very true. But keep in mind this drummer, Martin Lopez isn't European. He's latin.
