In 1954 Westinghouse, who owned KYW radio, bought WPTZ-TV and traded them to RCA for a radio and TV station in Cleveland. From 1955 to 1965, Channel 3 and 1060AM in Philadelphia were WRCV (for RCA Victor). In 1965 the FCC forced the TV stations to swap back and so KYW, which had been in Cleveland for those 11 years, came back to Philly along with Mike Douglas and Tom Snyder. Read Wikipedia on KYW for the whole history if interested.
My impression of pre-1971 Philadelphia was that it was stodgy and depressing. With the exception of the Mummers Parade footage, his video actually supports it.
@gopconservative78 are you stuck in the 1950s? The black community has done so much for Philadelphia. It wouldn't be the same wonderful city without black people. Sure, there is a poverty problem but that has nothing to do with skin color. Maybe if white Philadelphians didn't flee the city in the 1960s but instead welcomed black people into their neighborhoods, things would be different.
Look at all the great stuff we had back then! Blackface in public, crap beer, the systematic removal of the trolleys, and laughably failed urban and traffic planning.
In 2011, we've got a long way to go, but we're miles ahead.
ignorance and bigotry? looks like you've been sucessfully brainwashed. everything was NORMAL back then, and some day we're gonna take it back. asshole
@snorlax45 ignorance and bigotry was normal unfortunately. exactly what are "we" going to take back? as long as people continue to differentiate by race the wealthy will continue to control all of us. because the wealthy don't give a rat's ass if you are white black or purple. they only care about how much money you have. that is the real separation in this nation. you sir, are the asshole.
Great film. It is so much better to have them here than collecting dust in the attic. Thanks for sharing. These old records of life are fascinating and will be even more so the older they become. Remember, you and I are in the pioneering stage of the Internet. People 4 thousand years from now will see these and marvel. Your great, great, great, great, great grandchildren will see these. Imagine that! The "number" who have viewed will someday hit a billion!
"Mummers Parade." looks more like a Gay Pride parade.
But ...imagine if you could go back to the early '50s and replace some of our current technology with some of the ignorance and bigotry of the period. Then you might have something.
A quiet Sunday in Philadelphia...only because, thanks to the "Blue Laws" that weren't repealed until the 1970s, the only things that were open were churches, ballparks, theaters and train stations.

Awesome video. And, to the comments below me - It's really not that bad here. Damn.

WPTZ was the call sign for what's now KYW (CBS-3). They used that call sign from 1941-56.
