Up to this point in the movie, in my opinion, the son is NOT the loving and caring person he claims to be regarding his Mom. He obviously knew where his Mom was because as soon as he found out that she was sick, he ran directly there without even asking where she was.  But not once did he go and see his Mom. He made it seem like he missed and loved her so much. He had many chances to go see and take care of her. He almost lost her. I'd say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Dont you?
