Check "The Little Mermaid" when Eric harpoons the sea witch. The blood is black like ink, but she does get wounded. Also "Sleeping Beauty", Philip's thrown Sword of Truth imbeds in the dragon's heart and the wound drips with blood. I'll have to check Pocahontas again when the brave takes a bullet. Of course, you are not including any live-action movies...
I just bought the 25th Anniversary Edition of The Black Cauldron, it's got only one deleted scene, which contains the Fairfolk. I hope The Special Edition has more...This movie is not just popular for being "underrated" but also going through quite a bit of editing to make it more "suitable" to Disney standards anyway....
@peterfinnfilms Yeah, I know that now. LoL! Honestly with Disney it's hard to keep track. Before they came out with the 25th Anniversary Edition, There was The Gold Edition, and I'm pretty sure a regular DVD, so they're are three different DVDs of The Black Cauldron. All with pretty much the same content. I had just bought the Special Edition when I saw this and thought another one was (Possibly a 2 disc set) that would give us more special features but no.
@peterfinnfilms Actually, they're are three. LoL Two official and one "official" bootleg. The Bootleg doesn't count obviously but it's out there. I thought Disney released 3 different ones but no. Like I said with Disney it's hard to keep track. They release and re-release with the special, anniversary, gold or diamond editions and "vault" then "unvault". I'm just glad they released on DVD to begin with.
I hate how Disney has brutally ignored this film ever since its premiere. It´s a crime against humanity that beautiful Eilonwy is not perceived as an A-list Disney princess.
@peterfinnfilms The success of any film is ultimately down to two things: It's innate quality and the amount of promotion. Clearly Disney didn't promote the film enough for it to really make some money, despite the excellent reviews, it lost to the Care Bears movie of all things.
Disney could easily make a legitimate sequel. It's common practice these days to give a film with either critical or commercial success another shot with a sequel and they based this movie on only two of the books.
I'm not saying it deserved to bomb. I'm saying it's not surprising Disney has ignored it so considering how big of a bomb it was. But what do you mean, "excellent reviews"? It has a 57% on RT. That's hardly a ringing endorsement.
@peterfinnfilms Look at who's giving good reviews. Roger Ebert, the critic who could literally make-or-break a film, give it 3 1/2 stars out of 4. And most of the people who said it was bad said it was so because it was either too dark or not dark enough
And this isn't the worst film Disney ever made, Disney made far worse and they continue to stand by those films. There are six novels, plenty of material to cannibalise to give this movie a sequel and thus another shot, and it deserves one.
I know Ebert liked it, but Siskel didn't. It got a few good reviews from well respected critics, but overall reaction to it was generally pretty mixed. And I'm not saying it was a bad film (although it was flawed); I actually enjoyed it. And I agree, Disney has definitely made worse movies. The Aristocats, Dinosaur, Home on the Range, Chicken Little, etc. But I'm not sure the movie deserves a second shot: even 25 years after its release, it's still pretty obscure.
With all this remake and reboot culture that surrounds Hollywood these days, a well-promoted, honest to goodness sequel to an obscure film would be more than welcome. Like I said, there's plenty of material, six books. All we need really is an executive who liked and will champion it, and the loyal consumers to drum up interest by buying the film. It could work!
In my opinion, Disney never should gotten the rights to this movie. Sure, it's great, but it just doesn't do the books justice. It doesn't even follow the story! I wish Disney wouldn't make movies after book series. I mean, look at the Chronicles of Narnia: the first movie was amazing, but the second one was just terrible. Caspian respected Peter in the book. In the movie, they hate each other. And what's with the Caspian an Susan? Yeah Disney, let's just make up random stuff cuz we CAN>
Oh, my gosh! I never even heard of this movie! After all these years of watching classical Disney movies and I never even heard of this one?!? Must of been one of the oldest Disney movie ever made.

I am very excited about this Disney's project (The Snow Queen is scheduled to 2013). Because it has some people that worked in other great Disney animations:
Written by Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King)
Produced by Don Hahn (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King)
Score composer Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin)
Directed by Kevin Lima (Tarzan)
Btw, The Snow Queen is a fairytale created by the danish Hans Christian Andersen (The L. Mermaid)!
@oopaulorafael The Snow Queen is about the struggle between good and evil as experienced by a little boy and girl named Kay and Gerda.
Take a look on Wikipedia, there are very good infos about The Snow Queen. By the way, the title character is the main antagonist, who kidnaps the boy Kay. Gerda goes for his rescue.
@pixargod The infos about TSQ's release are not sure indeed...
Hopefully thy wont shelve this project... i think if Disney Animation put the best efforts in TSQ, it will be another masterpiece like Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King.
@1990SuperGeek I'm extremely excited for this DVD... and its been delayed for almost 2 years now. But in the latest Disney DVD/Blu-ray releases, this trailer has been showing up in the sneak peak portions, which means it is not being scrapped... and it has been reported that it will be released this Fall. I'm hoping it will actually be this fall, and not delayed yet again. Signs are pointing to it actually being released this year, however.

they might be doing a dvd/blu-ray set that includes both the cut and uncut versions of the film and remember if the deleted scenes are as graphic as the rumours say then the advisory board could give it a 15 or 18 certificate
they should include a severe warning sticker to the dvd/br so the parents can be fore-warned and maybe a short introduction to the film by a disney representive or maybe 2 seperate sets cut dvd/br and uncut dvd/br
@Glynreaper08 a "uncut/ director's cut" would be incredible, if they would also include a lot of behind-the-scenes special features, it would be an amazing dvd
I have to admit, it is a very good movie on Disney's part.
The only thing that disappoints me is how they portray Dallben, Fflewddur Fflam, Gurgi and the Fair Folk. Dallben is shown differently to how he was described. Fflam is a bard-king in the books, in his mid to late thirties. I pictured Gurgi a little bit like a sasquatch, as then he would be scary. The Fair Folk were not completely fairies: Doli was a dwarf.
Also, the movie is titled after the -second- book in the series of five books.
> the movie is titled after the -second- book in the series of five books.
The movie was based on the first two books. In the book series, the Horned King and the Black Cauldron appeared in books one and two respectively. I suspect "The Horned King and the Black Cauldron" would have been too much of a mouthful for a movie title. :)
@Faunatik Taran and Hiccup - Two scrawny underage boys hoping to be warriors and not lame apprentices for the rest of their lives, wind up with deranged unknown critters as best friends, and somehow manage to save lives and live happily ever after. HTTYD has references to many movies, most of which are owned by Disney and this is one of 'em. HTTYD is so successful because it has little Disney-Pixar magic. Although the movie's originality is 0,5/5 while most of the other stuff are 5/5
Has anyone ever noticed that halfway through the movie, Tarren's voice gets deeper? I'm just wondering if it's just me, or if Grant whats-his-name hit puberty during the making or something...:)
The commercial is on the Princess and the Frog dvd and blu-ray.. meaning its still coming out and will be out this year! Hope you guys didn't lose hope. :D
Cool, thank you Sooo much for saying that this commercial was on the PatF(Princess and the Frog)DVD/Blu-Ray! :) Bummer it doesn't give an exact date on when in june though :( Still, glad to hear that! :)
This movie is not Horrible, but it does have a lot a problems. Their is a reason why its not a memorable movie, or a classic. Cause its not. For one thing the movie drags on. The Main Villien looks cool and everything, but he does nothing. The few times we see him, He walks walks around, Sits on a thrown, and casts a spell in the cauldren.
One scene shows a man's throat being sliced and torso I think, and another shows a man being devoured by mist so it will be violent. If you want you can see a picture of the mist devouring a man.
Oh man I loved this movie so much as a kid. I'm so thrilled to see that a special edition is in the works. I'm really curious about the deleted scenes that were apparently too violent for Disney. Original fans of this movie deserve to view the film as it was originally created.
Please include, you know, "the" deleted scenes. I want to know what disturbed Roy and Katzenberg so much that they knifed the movie at the last minute!
it is underappreciated, partly because it was the first disney to be a pg, and that was with the scenes cut out i believe, from what i heard the age may have originally been a bit higher, so i am quite eager as to find out what the deleted scenes will be like, also i've always liked this film, its very different from alot of thier other movies
What was this posted, a year ago. Yeah, "Coming Soon" my ass...just like "The Adventurs of Pete & Pete Season 3" was "coming soon". I really hope this does come out though, The Black Cauldron is awesome. I saw part of it on tv a few months ago and was pretty amazed at how well rounded it was. And the evil king was beyond awesome.
This is a great step in the right direction for Disney. I've been wanting this one. It's one of my favorite Disney films, and definitely one of the most underrated. I'm also interested in seeing the deleted scenes.
But why can't Disney also give us a Hunchback special edition?
@bluethunder25 I agree completely. A very underrated movie. After seeing Black Cauldron, I went out and read the series the movie was based on. It would be interesting if they made the movie today instead of back in the 80's, now that women have more prominent roles in animated films. Eilonwy had much more to do in the book which was toned way down for the movie.
@92af Yeah i agree! This is my favourite ever Disney film, but a suprisingly small number of people have ever seen it! I just get blank looks when i mention it.
They will, next June. Gotta feel sorry for Eilonwy. Had the film been a hit, she could have been signing autographs and posing for photos at Disney World. Gurgi and the others as well.
then i guess his voice must of change during the movie, cus eit sounds alot older, then that young kid, vocie i herd...so thats weird....then agian...Disney,does make some really good Dark films, like Saw,and other the black culdren, looks amazing!!!
No, lol I do not work for Disney. I just know a few people. I do not post false information. So if I know something to be a fact, like the release date for this DVD, I'll post it.
I'm just hoping this edition will be worth waiting for and that Disney will also release Song of the South at last (ask Obama if he finds that movie offensive) , new 2-disc editions of The Hunchback and Hercules as well as uncut versions of Make Mine Music and Melody Time (I guess the Disney studio must have a lot of material they could add to the future editions of the 40's classics , especially The Three Caballeros) ...and I would love a Ludwig Van Drake dvd !!!
yay! this is going to be realesed 3 or 4 months ago!!!!! ... uhhh wait a sec ..... nevermind ...... 8 months from now!!!
=D
I love how the advertising campain for the mouse lost some contact with the creative teams .... Nightastic and the new dragon being a very good example =P
heh, always wanted to see the deleted scenes that would've almost given Disney an R rating....XD
though oddly enough, that one image of a deleted scene when that dude basically melted from the green smog reminds me too much about Rob Zombie's artwork...O.o
Even if this movie was not a big success, it was interesting enough to make me wanna read the entire Prydain Chronicles. Yes, there are differences between the movie and the book, but movie versions are always different. But sometimes I wished that Disney would have made it into five seperate movies based on the book titles. The ending of The High King left me in tears as I play "Into the West" from the LOTR soundtrack.
Just letting everyone who was excited about this (like I was) The DVD seems to have been canceled, for the most part anyway, My guess is they are waiting for a blu-ray release now.
It's important top remember that Disney never announced a release date for this title, nor did they ever put the site in the trailer online. The site was never online, so no one took it down. Disney just never launched it. The release has obviously been delayed, but it hasn't been canceled. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
I guess this is probably a redundant question, but does anyone know if the special edition's coming out in Australia in August also? 'cause none of the major DVD sites here have any info. Thanks.
you really shouldn't trust everything Wikipedia says. Disney has not set a scheduled release date yet. As of right now it seems the Special Edition of this film will be released by October.
I would forgive Disney for even High School Musical and the Jonas Brothers if they included the bisected villager and dissolving man deleted scenes XD
I read about them in several places, they're fairly well known. Unfortunately it's doubtful they'll be on the DVD. More likely is that it'll be the deleted song.
I had heard about them as well...I wish they would put them on a dvd...they can always have a warning...I know there was a deleated scene in exoricist that you can only see online.
Well, there's no songs in The Black Cauldron. Except for the part where the princess is fixing the bard's pants, but it's only for a couple of seconds.
if they plan to put in all of the deleted scenes then you have over an hour of a movie that never got finished ,a musical number (shocking I know) ,an alternate ending , and scenes so graphic that I bet the "Disney Vault" has another chamber in the very back with 18 difrent locks just for them ...
but I bet we'll only get a third of all that ...
=P
but it looks like they cleaned up some of the glitchy animation =D
is this special edition really coming out? or is disney just getting us all excited again, for thewir plans to release another film to dvd, all to change their minds and push the release date back
>_> ... should I be ashamed of the fact that I've never even heard of this b4? T^T Maybe I'm just too distracted by modern junk to notice the timeless classics of past generations :3
nah don't be ashamed if you havent herd of it Disney trys to shelf this one as much as they can , waiting almost 15 years to put it on VHS and 10 for DVD ... it's one of the most uncommented by the Disney Company so this "speacal edition" should be eather disapointing or quite interesting ... =]
Song of the south is over looked beacuse of legal reasons. Although remeiance still remains. The "Law" considered it minorly prejudiece and its sarcastic racial comments. So its only over looked for legal reason. But in Disney World Splash Moutain has the characters in it. That ride almost made me throw up. Im terrfied of heights. Back to the topic, black cauldron is overlooked beacuse it was a flop and it just is.

None of this waiting till after Beauty & The Beast business.
Stupid Disney.

Has anyone ever noticed that halfway through the movie, Tarren's voice gets deeper? I'm just wondering if it's just me, or if Grant whats-his-name hit puberty during the making or something...:)

The Black Cauldron is one of the best disney movies ever, but The Black Cauldron is certainly the most sinister of all disney movies.

Walt Disney's Classic Adventure,
that only a handful of people know about.
It is definitely A Cult Classic Adventure. I'm glad they're releasing it finally! A great and underrated movie!

OMG this is my favorite disney movie of all time, I lost the VHS so I need to buy this on DVD!

Poor movie, it's one of my favorites... and not only from Disney
Yamisorabakura 2 years ago
it is underappreciated, partly because it was the first disney to be a pg, and that was with the scenes cut out i believe, from what i heard the age may have originally been a bit higher, so i am quite eager as to find out what the deleted scenes will be like, also i've always liked this film, its very different from alot of thier other movies

SLPIFan 2 years ago 5
A very underrated and underraprciated movie. So much so, that it wasn't even released on video for 15 freakin years!
bluethunder25 2 years ago 38
@bluethunder25 I agree completely. A very underrated movie. After seeing Black Cauldron, I went out and read the series the movie was based on. It would be interesting if they made the movie today instead of back in the 80's, now that women have more prominent roles in animated films. Eilonwy had much more to do in the book which was toned way down for the movie.

It shouldn't sound different. This trailer uses the audio direct from the film, there us no re-dubbing.

then i guess his voice must of change during the movie, cus eit sounds alot older, then that young kid, vocie i herd...so thats weird....then agian...Disney,does make some really good Dark films, like Saw,and other the black culdren, looks amazing!!!

I'm just hoping this edition will be worth waiting for and that Disney will also release Song of the South at last (ask Obama if he finds that movie offensive) , new 2-disc editions of The Hunchback and Hercules as well as uncut versions of Make Mine Music and Melody Time (I guess the Disney studio must have a lot of material they could add to the future editions of the 40's classics , especially The Three Caballeros) ...and I would love a Ludwig Van Drake dvd !!!

heh, always wanted to see the deleted scenes that would've almost given Disney an R rating....XD
though oddly enough, that one image of a deleted scene when that dude basically melted from the green smog reminds me too much about Rob Zombie's artwork...O.o

Disney even took down the site -_-
MINECAR 2 years ago
It's important top remember that Disney never announced a release date for this title, nor did they ever put the site in the trailer online. The site was never online, so no one took it down. Disney just never launched it. The release has obviously been delayed, but it hasn't been canceled. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
MikeDV101 2 years ago
I have a question. Where did you find this trailer?
Fri1991 2 years ago
On the Disney DVD release "Secret of the Magic Gourd". It can found on several recent Disney DVD releases.
MikeDV101 2 years ago
It's a dream who come true !5/5
Apedemak8 2 years ago
I really hope Disney goes all out on this release. Like totally restoring and remastering it into HD Anamorphic WideScreen.
Unfortunately some recent releases like
The Sword In The Stone 45th Anniversary Edition,
Oliver N Company 20th Anniversary Edition, and Lilo And Stitch Big Wave Edition did NOT have any work done to make the quality of the movies better.
Riddler95 2 years ago 3
I guess this is probably a redundant question, but does anyone know if the special edition's coming out in Australia in August also? 'cause none of the major DVD sites here have any info. Thanks.

I read at wikipedia that the black cauldron will come out in August and it will be called: THE BLACK CAULDRON: DARKSIDE EDITION.
vladimirxzxz13 2 years ago
you really shouldn't trust everything Wikipedia says. Disney has not set a scheduled release date yet. As of right now it seems the Special Edition of this film will be released by October.

I would forgive Disney for even High School Musical and the Jonas Brothers if they included the bisected villager and dissolving man deleted scenes XD

Apedemak8 2 years ago
who told you about those scenees
littlesongbird1 2 years ago
I read about them in several places, they're fairly well known. Unfortunately it's doubtful they'll be on the DVD. More likely is that it'll be the deleted song.
MrDavros 2 years ago
I had heard about them as well...I wish they would put them on a dvd...they can always have a warning...I know there was a deleated scene in exoricist that you can only see online.
littlesongbird1 2 years ago
Well, there's no songs in The Black Cauldron. Except for the part where the princess is fixing the bard's pants, but it's only for a couple of seconds.
Fri1991 2 years ago
Yep, but there was one that was deleted from the final movie.
MrDavros 2 years ago
Hmmm ... deleted scenes ....
if they plan to put in all of the deleted scenes then you have over an hour of a movie that never got finished ,a musical number (shocking I know) ,an alternate ending , and scenes so graphic that I bet the "Disney Vault" has another chamber in the very back with 18 difrent locks just for them ...
but I bet we'll only get a third of all that ...
=P
but it looks like they cleaned up some of the glitchy animation =D
thats a plus

is this special edition really coming out? or is disney just getting us all excited again, for thewir plans to release another film to dvd, all to change their minds and push the release date back

nah don't be ashamed if you havent herd of it Disney trys to shelf this one as much as they can , waiting almost 15 years to put it on VHS and 10 for DVD ... it's one of the most uncommented by the Disney Company so this "speacal edition" should be eather disapointing or quite interesting ... =]

OHHH! No one has heard of this movie! It makes me upset! YOU'RE MISSING OUT! Oh, its SO AMAZING. I can't begin to explain my love for this movie!
xtremeskilzfrombirth 2 years ago
No this is a film that had kind of been over looked by the disney film industry along with song of the south.
littlesongbird1 2 years ago
Song of the south is over looked beacuse of legal reasons. Although remeiance still remains. The "Law" considered it minorly prejudiece and its sarcastic racial comments. So its only over looked for legal reason. But in Disney World Splash Moutain has the characters in it. That ride almost made me throw up. Im terrfied of heights. Back to the topic, black cauldron is overlooked beacuse it was a flop and it just is.
