I've always thought of this song as a truthful one, I don't think Billy was bitching about women, rather accepting them as they are. I love this song.
I would like the men that it doesn't work out with to think of me this way. You know, those men along the way where your lives were joined for just the night? Those ones you never forget, but it was just a moment in time. I hope they can say this about me.
"...she can lead you to love...she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants, she's ahead of her time...she never gives out, and she never gives in, she just changes her mind...she'll bring out the best and the worst you can be...she's frequently kind...she can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool...she's earned her degree, and the most she will do is throw shadows at you, but she's always a woman to me." Not all negative, totally love-hate, totally reality. Love it :-)
this song isn't dissing women or about his ex-wife. billy joel even said in an interview that the song is a conversation between himself and a pessimist saying bad things about a woman. but despite what the otherman says, "she's always a woman" to billy joel.
just because he wrote it about his ex wife doesn't necessarily mean its a hate song. I think its more about love and hate. because sometimes you meet someone, who one moment you think there the one and the next moment wanna strangle them then next. Its about the good and the bad. In the end you no shes capable of horrible things, but its that cunning crazy that makes you insane and in love. and you can still have feelings for your ex. this song makes sense for lingering feelings.
I chose this song for my first dance, my interpretation of this song is its not about the negative qualities of woman but how the lady you love, whatever wrongs she has done, be it intentionally or not doesn't affect the way you feel about her...... and that she's always a woman to me.
I know this song is about the negative qualities of women, but every time I hear it, I cry. Simply because the music is beautiful: The harmonies, the piano, the guitar. It's all exquisite.
I walked down the isle to this song. We're not perfect. Nobody is. No relationship is. If more people admitted their faults, their strengths and the bits in between we'd see less bloody miserable faces out and about. Great song. Don't take a song verbatim, it's not written by you. These lyrics are subjective.
I don't think this song is just about the "negative" qualities of a woman, but more of the force they can be, negative and positive and how, as a man, it's best not to try to figure them out...
This song played at the Austin J. Tobin Plaza at the base of the former World Trade Center towers during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and continued to play until both towers fell.
I'm lolling, everywhere I go people are happily saying this song reminds them of themselves, or their boyfriends dedicated this song to them, not realizing it's a song Billy Joel wrote about his ex-wife and the negative qualities of women
@themasteriswatching just bc billy joel found these as bad qualities doesn't mean they are the be all and end all of the makings of a bad woman. And EVERY song has a different meaning to every person to the listener. That's the beauty of music......
@themasteriswatching I suggest reading more about it. It is a very common mistake that people think it is in a negative tune. Here is the Wiki article quote - Lyrically, many people misinterpreted the words as being misogynistic or sarcastic, but it is a ballad, a love song that Joel wrote for his then wife, Elizabeth. Elizabeth had taken over management of Joel's career, and was able to put his financial affairs in order after Joel had signed some bad deals and contracts.
@themasteriswatching It's a love song that Joel wrote for his then wife, Elizabeth. Elizabeth had taken over management of Joel's career, and was able to put his financial affairs in order after Joel had signed some bad contracts. She was a tough and savvy negotiator who could "wound with her eyes" or "steal like a thief", but would "never give in". Because of her tough-as-nails negotiating style, many business adversaries thought she was "unfeminine," but to Joel, she was always a woman.
@AMS1973able you're retarded... there is no way he wrote this about his mother.... this is love song about his ex-wife this is not a love song about his mommy dumbass.i come from long island were he is from.. she can lead you to love she can take you or leave you? would your mom abandon you? she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding? would your mom do that? then thats kinda fucked up.... i mean he's obviously talking about a spiteful sexual relationship with a woman.
@themasteriswatching ... it's actually a love song about a woman he falls in love with for her quirks as well as her flaws...Bily Joel NEVER said he wrote this about his ex-wife, nor did he ever say that he wrote this as a negative song...its about loving someone for their imperfections. but I'm assuming that anyone that uses the term "lolling" can't be that educated anyway
@themasteriswatching Be that as it may, there are still positive qualities listed (in the opinion of anyone who's not a chauvinist jackass). And as such I tend to agree with those who say the song is more about how women are just really complicated, for good or ill.
Aside from the lying and thieving parts, it pretty well applies to my girlfriend. The bitchy days can suck...but they're rare and subdued usually. Because I'm that awesome to her. I keep her in a good mood.
Back in the 70's Billy used to play at Tulane University a couple of times a year. I never missed one of those shows. Then , he became a big pop star and played bigger arenas. It made me appreciate those Tulane gigs even more. Those shows were in McAllister Auditorium. Not a small place, but much more intimate than a basketball arena or a football stadium.
This song so reminds me of my ex but take nothing away from billy joel quality singer and song......
