However, since the magnetic field is already moving all around the coil, it should _not_ be necessary to have the ball magnet moving in the coil in order to pick up enough field to generate current to light the LED. All that is needed is something to concentrate the moving field inside the winding's core, such as a ferrite bar or laminations from a transformer. It's cool to see the ball spinning, but the friction is just wasting energy, where there are no losses with a non-moving core.

After playing it several times I noticed that the LED got brighter when the ball magnet was directly above the coil windings, then got dimmer when it was in the core of the coil. The rotating ball magnet's magnetic field cuts across the windings when it's directly above the coil. When it's rotating inside the core, the ball's magnetic field is not cutting through the windings. I think lidmotor's coil is in a better position, with the windings vertically positioned. Way to go Jonny, this is incredible! Self starting and, I thought you were going to fry that led there for a minute. That thing was very, very bright! What was the wire gauge on that spool with the led? Very nice work indeed!

Hi Bill.The gauge is 40swg maybe a couple of thousand turns,wound onto a plumbers ptfe tape spool with a drill.The ideal place for the neo sphere to spin is directly over the winding but i had it running in the centre and it still fully lit the Led.Thanks again Bill.Regards jonny

Also, it looks like the pickup coils do not produce lenz strong enough to act on the sepheres at that distance...

I'd be VERY interested to see how many pickup coils you could get and if you can get over unity...
