I have a bunch of friends that just use their computer for IMing and social media (like facebook) and they do some light word processing for school (which could easily be done on Google Docs).
If they could pick up a computer for 300-400 bucks that does everything they want then why wouldn't?
If Chrome OS is Marketed correctly it could be quite successful.
chrome os is perfect for netbooks all netbooks should run with it but i just don't see how someone could use a net book because really all you can do on there is go on the internet you cant do anything els without wasting all your memory.
Linux is getting more and more popular. Take Mac OS X for example (yes, it's a BSD), you don't need to know c++, to get around. It just works, very stable and a nice GUI makes it more appealing to the masses
why is google taking so long to do this? its not hard to make linux start up into a web browser, it isn't hard to eliminate window decorations, it isn't hard to remove panels, it isn't hard to make it fast. like unless they're just trying to ensure the chrome browser will work in linux, they're really taking their sweet-ass time for something so minimal
they aren't "making" it. its linux, so they have VERY little to work on. they don't have to make drivers, they don't have to make the kernel, the shell, the graphical interface, the programs - all they really have to do is port chrome to linux and customize the desktop to be what they want it to be, which should not have taken this long. android had an excuse to take a while - its put on devices that nobody has installed linux on and they made a lot of significant changes
they're only using the kernel, newer hardware is generally not well supported, therefore they have to make drivers if they aren't supported. Chrome OS isn't using the X window system so they have to make the graphical interface bottom up, and they are probably making a lot of their own programs for chatting and similar stuff because google cannot rely on many open-source projects such as pidgin for example because of its buggy msn support. so it's not lfs with google's logo and a browser on it.
hmm interesting, i guess that perfectly answers my question. although i wouldn't go through the effort of recreating X, i can see why they'd make their own graphical interface. it looks like they've got a lot of work to do if they plant to make their own drivers as well. do you know if they are going to release drivers and the applications to all other linux users? i think that'd be great
as far as i know they are not using the X server. i think they don't want to rush the os because google wants to be innovative and i think they have to finish negotiating with other software companies.
you can't do anything on it.. imagine training wheels without bike! that's what it is! idk what are you all so happy 'bout it.. you have only fcuking browsarz.. >_>
only hope is that it will be fast... but it will eat mem anyways -> it i'll became slow -> fuck it -> let's get archlinux
linux is so focused on being unix-like that actually going for unix would be pointless, since thats just a more costly license, unless they went for free-bsd. linux is free, open-source, and unix-like. as a response to your comment, it'd be stupid for them not to do it, especailly if chrome itself is intended to be free
Yes most definatly it will succeed and it will start to take over microsoft. As soon as software developers jump on board they will take off faster than you would belive. Cant wait.
I think that a few assumptions here are wrong. There's nothing saying that Chrome OS won't have any local apps and that it will need constant internet access.
Google Blogg:
"most of the user experience takes place on the web"
So I take it that some local apps will still exist but google will push for HTML5 and Google Gears based apps for local storage. I will also guess that Google will access local OS resources through an embedded web server and use the browser to access local resources.
Yeah, but, they didn't even say how small the HardDrive would be on Chrome NetBooks
Chrome is designed mainly for Internet Surfing. Yes I know its Linux-Based.
Some companies and organizations use a 10gb to 40GB local storage, because they already have a Server Network that has storage available and can be accessed by multiple people.
I love Brian Tong! -3 but not in a gay/weird way! :P

If you think Google can just make an OS in a few weeks you're an idiot.

dude I use ubuntu , and I tried arch linux. my point is Google choose a Linux kernel. they could as easy chosen UNIX kernel or build there own.
if you know any thing about computer , kernel a big part of computer science.

I thinks so . different distro have different goals. as for linus , I don't believe that is his goal, he was inspired by Minx.

Ever hear of Ubuntu and Linux?
In my opinion, its going to be the same thing.
Dell and Dell Canada sells Ubuntu pre-loaded by the way.

i've heard about everything, but i think i'm gonna stick for microsoft =p
..If i can't use my sony vegas because of compability issues, i can't create my movies =/
feralkuriboh 2 years ago
Sony Vegas might run on Wine, which Ubuntu and other Linux operating systems use to run Windows related stuff.
It may or may not run on Wine, thats the DownSide.
You could certainly do a Dual-Boot, Windows and Ubuntu on the same system. or try run Ubuntu from CD, instead of installing on HardDrive.

plus, i like windows =P

i agree, sony vegas = youtube
no sony vegas no more new videos

can't agree.. there are much more other open video editors available
