I know they sell it that way but it has only recently been determined that all of the extra ingredients in the walmart brand (and other brands) hummingbird "food" is actually detrimental to the birds' health.

Plain table sugar and water is the way to go. I used to make the red stuff too and the birds noticeably prefer the plain sugar water over that stuff in my opinion.

Please don't use red food coloring. Research has shown it is bad for the birds.

Natural nectar is clear, not red, it is only the flowers (feeders) themselves that are colored.

That's the way Wal-Mart was selling it ready-made. I took whatever they offered.
