In Season 2, in Morning Comes, Lundy brings up the Rodrigo case, in which Dexter deliberately screwed up the blood work so he could kill Rodrigo himself. When asked about it, he claimed to have been overworked at the time.

Here, it's the same thing, only Dexter really was exhausted.
