  • iJustine! =DD

  • Hi! I LOVE your tutorials! I was wondering what kind of tablet you use? I'm looking for an inexpensive but decent tablet that would work well for photo editing as well as drawing. Any recommendations? Thank you! :) Heather

Heather UpChurch I Art & Design Studios

  • @artanddesignstudios Unfortunately, anything worth buying isn't going to be cheap. I recommend the Wacom Intuos versions...any intuos, maybe even a used one. The bamboo and graphire types are a waste of money as they only have 512 levels of sensitivity vs 1024+ levels that the Intuos versions offer.

  • YOU REALLY HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCHH !!! I LOVED THIS TUTORIALLL !!!! I M TOTALLYYY YOUR FAN NOW !!! THANKYOU SO MUCHH !!!

  • i love it very much thanks for this tutorial very clear god bless u always photomama

    from philippines

  • CHEAT................

  • Hi there photomama!!

Let me thank your for your patience and goodwill.

Second, as I am not a native speaker, I thank you for your pronunciation. Your voice is so clear and at such a controlled speed I have no problem following your instructions.

Last, I will use photoshop to make paintings from photos and sell them in a catalog. I've already made some n I am sure ppl will buy cos most just want a beautiful art hanging, not necessarily a masterpiece.

Hugs and keep doing your nice work!

  • the girl in the picture looks like ijustine!!

  • I love your videos they are true tutorials. So many people who have supposed tutorials on here, just like to show off what they can do to obnoxiously loud music, and don't explain anything they are doing. Thank you so much for explaining everything and making it so much easier to understand. Speed is not the idea, learning takes time. I would rather watch any of your videos instead of the fast paced videos that teach nothing. Thank you for your time in helping those of us who want to learn

  • Thank you so much!

  • This was a great tutorial for me. Not so much about photoshop but about how to do a good tutorial. It is incredibly packed with details. I'm still trying to find out how much detail should be given. According to the comments here your tutorial might be to rich, however, for someone who's not familiar with PS at all this is very helpful.

Thank you for this video it is sure a helpful support.

  • Thank you so much!

  • Discerning the breathe of your voice, the nature of your heart is truly that of a mama. You are really the photoshopmama.

  • Yes I am! lol. Thank you so much!

  • Photoshopmama, you are the best. Please don't listen to the nay sayers. Keep up the good work with the tutorials. And thank you for being benevolent with you knowledge.

  • Thanks Salvophoto...and believe me, I just sometimes like to toy back with the naysayers, as in 100% of these cases, they are doing nothing worthwhile to help others learn something here on YouTube or anywhere else, to my knowledge, and they have hidden identities, whereas I am out in the open...you know who I am by my real name...so I like pointing that out when they are so quick to criticize those of us who are trying to pass on some knowledge.

  • @photoshopmama pass on some knowledge to make money for urself.

  • Not sure what you mean by "pass on some knowledge to make money for urself." I am very happy and fulfilled with what I do here and elswhere...and I make a sustainable living...and have a great family....what more could I need? I am grateful for each day.

  • Photoshopmama, you are the best. Please don't listen to the nay sayers. Keep up the good work with the good tutorials. And thank you for being benevolent with you knowledge.

  • Thanks and I will!

  • i could have made a video that was 2 minutes long explaining the same thing

  • Could have, would have, should have....be my guest!

  • Very good technique. I've done this many different ways but you had a couple of good insights! Cheers!

  • 25 minutes for THIS?? its so dimwitted...if you dont even know how to select a brush, you shouldnt be watching tutorials and how to make stuff yet. you should be learning the freakin basics of the program.

  • @777dandylion This tutorial was meant to include some "basics" Being a teacher for 10+ years, I've found project oriented learning will stick better than just going over all the "tools" So, most of my tutorials only assume knowledge of the viewer to be how to open the program, open files, and save files. Having a particular project and applying techniques using only what is necessary to the project is easier to digest than going over the abstracts of all the functions of tools.

  • one question: do you use a graphic tablet?

  • @MrAddicted2converse Most of the time, yes.

  • what a stupid way of using photoshop. But I guess its true that some people consider that an honor staying closer to the birds than wishing that they had wings..

  • Perhaps you are an artist who is bound by traditional mediums so you find anything digital that simulates art offensive or below the bar. I am also a traditional artist AND a digital artist and thoroughly enjoy the broader scope of creating with a much bigger "palette." I am also a progressive and futurist and embrace NEW things and adapt pretty easily. We would still be in the Dark Ages if most of us didn't. See some photos of my traditional art in Gallery 2 of my shanzcan dot com Website.

  • nice it really help tnx for this

hope u could upload more videos about photoshop

youre one of the best :)

  • I agree with kittyutoob this tutorial is awsome. I'm pretty new in the photoshop world. You have that rare ability to bring the subject matter to the student in a clear and concise manner. I have been having a ball recreating some of my pix into paintings, Many thanks. jl

  • What do I need to do speed up the Surface Blur process?

When dealing with a high res pic it seems like it took about almost five minutes.

  • @Latentdreams Processing speed depends on the architecture of your computer. R U running 64-bit or 32-bit. Are you using Photoshop 32-bit or 64-bit? How much available Ram you have and the % you are alloctating to Photoshop. How much Hard drive scratch disk space is available and how many other programs you have running at the same time Photoshop is running.

  • @photoshopmama ...and of course, the actual type of processors you have and the type of video card....whew! In other words, it depends on many variables.

  • @Latentdreams Also if you are working in Photoshop for extended periods of time and notice a slowdown of processing time, sometimes just quitting Photoshop and restarting it, gives it a boost.

  • You need a lot of RAM and probably a faster processor working in a 64bit OS

  • very well done. thank you.

  • Great video mama:)

  • that looked like ijustine for a min.

  • wonderful I love it! you are an artist thank you so much for share your knowledge!

  • Nice.

  • I have to do seven portraits almost 2m high in under 2 weeks in my spare time (I'm working full time). There is no way I could physically paint them so I'm doing them on photoshop and getting them printed. Some of the techniques you have shown here are invaluable and the instructions are clear. Photoshopmama you have really helped me out, thanks!

  • @loathiesome I'm an artist and do commission portraits, and I find nothing wrong with this. It's not about being lazy, it is an affect someone wants to make on a picture they like. Not everyone has the artistic talent that some of us do, not to say photoshop mama doesn't, because I don't know her, but to assume that because someone wants to make a picture look this way they are lazy or have no talent, or don't care about painted artwork... it makes you sound completely self righteous

  • Great tutorial!

  • Thanks for making the tutorials!

  • very nice.

  • Great video. Don't listen to loathiesome - some people simply can't embrace new technology and realize its potential.

    You're wonderfully gifted ;-)

  • Thanks for the support. I appreciate it!

  • It looks the same

  • @loathiesome Why bother making real paintings when photoshop are available ? :) its not the way you do it which is important, its the result. this woman are obviously more interested in taking photos and SOMETIMES likes to put an painted touch to it.nothing wrong about that huh?

If so, we can call painters for sickening, why bother do timetaking paintings when photoshop is available? :)

My point is, this is a question of INTEREST only, not sickening in ANY way.

  • I too think that portraits should be done the way they used to be however, we are looking at a completely different scenario here. Magazines pay good money for efficiency and they are not going to wait for an artist to complete a whole oil portrait which they will then have to print. They can simply use the magic of Photoshop.. Plus the amount of work put in into this picture and the eye for detail and color is no less of an art itself. So relax! Great tutorial.

  • Great PSD Tut.. !!

  • You're a troll ^^

  • ok this is for beginners that know only a few things about ps ( using a brush no more :) ), the best and fast way is using a filter ( like ALIEN SKIN __SNAP ART) , much faster (10 sec), much better, more options, etc............... doing it like this is loosing time and not getting the BEST results because what have you done if you print it it will going to look like a blury photo not like a acrylic or oil portrait.

  • that was awesome!!!!

  • That's pretty narrow-minded and judgmental. What are you...the art police? Live and let live. No offense but you ain't exactly Rembrandt yourself there buddy.

  • thank you so much!............so very much to learn from this excellent tutorial

  • Funny, I am an artist and feel totally different about expanding horizons and mediums for artistic expression. FYI I got a scholarship to Chicago Academy of Fine Arts back in the 70s and did freelance portraits (from scratch) for years, as well as commercial P.O.P displays for national corporations.

  • excellent,

    thank you

  • very nice tutorial but i didnt understand why you created so many layers it seemed to me that it all could have been made on just one

  • Thank you very much for this nice and informative tutorial. this was the one I was looking for. cheers

  • oh mama are you the subject cuz if you are you are one hot mama!!!

  • I wanted to learn how to work on photoshop, and whith your help it might be possible :) so BIG thx, it's been a while when i last saw such a goooooood presentation :)

  • Mama tank you very much

  • mama, u r the best!

    thank you!

  • Hi =D

Your video has helped me so much! thank you!

Just one question, by making all the layers on my photo, it simply covers the filters and basic details that i modified in the lower layers... even when i flatten the layer, all the layers just dont seem to show... would you have any suggestions?

    thank you!

  • Mama, I like the rest would like to thank you for all your time and by making me better at photoshop. Your website is out of this world. I have been working on my own style for a while now and wondered if you will ever be doing a tutorial on the "Wet Look"? and what is the best way to contact off utube, I didn't want to clog your site.

    Thanks again

  • How do you get your signature so perfect?! Its hard for me to do detailed things like that with my mouse O.o

  • With a Wacom Intuos tablet and pen!

  • Thanks a lot for explaining why you do what you do. How to do it is of course the crux of the operation, however when one is a novice, it is hard to keep in mind what is posible in this magical and intimidatingly complex medium. I learn a lot each time!! Very good job!

  • Hi... I so much enjoyed watching your tutorial approach, and I learn a lot. Thanks God there's someone like you do sharing their talent to a lot of people.

    More power to you!!!

  • Much appreciated!

  • Hi Mama Shan, I just watched your tutorial entitled "Simulate Acrylic or Oil Portrait in Photoshop" and simply wanted to thank you! Your presentation style is great and your tone are not rushed. Your approach gives me a sense of comfort and simultaneously evidences your high degree of skillfulness.

    Best wishes,

    Robert

  • Hi Mama Shan, I just watched your tutorial entitled "Simulate Acrylic or Oil Portrait in Photoshop" and simply wanted to thank you! Your presentation style is.....

  • why mana shan? it lok like an hauswife or something ike tat :) sorry

  • ur such a good teacher u don't go super fast like most people do and u don't expect us to know what to do from the beginning[=

    thanks, i just subscribed too!

    xoxo

  • nice tut... one thing though, why don't you just make a custom brush for your signature?

  • I do, have had one for 10 years.

  • Arguably the best teacher/tutor here on youtube. I've been on youtube for awhile now and i rarely do subcriptions but you mama Shan is worth subscribing. Much love and respect! =p

  • Thank you so much!

  • what's so good about your tuts:thorough! really great teaching!

  • *claps* 5/5

  • Mama, I learned everything I needed to know about Photoshop CS3 from you, thanks so much. I will be making a purchase of all your glamour actions, thanks again.

  • Thanks for the support and kind words. I'm glad you are learning!

  • i love u mama! u r the best!

  • Thanks!

  • Wow, I appreciate your hard work and explaining everything step by step. You are awesome, any video on how to get rid of the background and making it look like a solid back ground with the image on the front?

  • You are awesome...I love your work!!!

  • Thanks...appreciate the comments!

  • Thank you so much!

  • i love you work!! thank you ssoooo much for your Help!

  • I love your work thank you so much for the help.

  • You are the best, thank you for your effort.

  • Another really fine tut, you sure are impressive the way you bring up so many things to achive such subtle, yet vital parts of the integral image.

    Thanks

  • looks like oil paint to me, and ive done actual oil painting. this totally cuts the work waaaaaay in half!

  • A much better technique for texture is to find a real photo of a canvas or old paper etc. on the internet (or scan/photograph something), put it on its own layer over the image, and then set the texture layer to multiply. The result will usually add great character and authenticity.

  • When ever you use the canvas texture or the like, try printing the image, it looks funky. It looks better if you only use remove dust and sratches just enough to make it look like a speed painting. Then add free hand brush strokes here and there. That looks good printed.

  • I'm a huge Photoshop fan. Most of my work is done in this great program. Watching your stuff makes me want to do more! I wish we could hang out and Photoshop.

    God bless.

  • ur awesome!!

  • that was really awesome you must work for a magazine or something

  • I used to write for SBS Digital Design Magazine, until they dissolved when they were bought out by Jupiter images.

  • Great job!

Explains in a lot of ways how they get the celebraties all touched up and perfect in the magz. It's amazing how fast the process actualy is...

  • i know it's a stupid question but what are bracket keys and where are they located?...i'm new at this i don't really now how to use cs2

  • They are the two keys to the right of the "P" key-(braces and brackets) on your keyboard. Not stupid question especially if you've never had a typing or keyboard class.

  • Oh I see...thanks...and thanks for your tutorials they are very helpful

  • wath???

  • They are the two keys to the right of the "P" key-(braces and brackets) on your keyboard. Not stupid question especially if you've never had a typing or keyboard class.

  • just the one im looking for... thankz so much...

  • That was really great, What kinda pen tablet do you like to use?

  • Wacom Intuos size-6x8

  • i wish someone would do a photo of me- i'd love to see the outcome!!!

  • Go to retouchpro dot com. They used to have "challenges" on their forum where you'd upload a picture and everyone would work on it and show what they did to it!

  • hey! thanks a lot!!!

  • Hello Photoshop Mama,

I am Inge, and I'm 14 years old.

I have to a few results or photoshop. I would put it on youtube, but, I don't know how. I'f allready try it with my camera, but that's a very bad quality. Can you help me?

    Great, Inge.

(Sorry for my bad English. I come from Holland, so I speak normally dutch. Hopely

  • You could use fraps.

The free version only captures 30 seconds but you can find full versions easily.

  • Hey PSxInge,

je engels is helemaal niet slecht hoor;)

    xx

    Daniëlle Bubberman

  • That was such an awesome tutorial. Thank you so very much!

  • This is such an amazing tutorial! I run a photo studio and am always looking for new PS techniques. I love so much of what I learned from here! Thank you sooo much!

  • thank you mamashan I've really learned something new in this video. Love it... looking forward for your new tutorial.

  • Mama you are awesome, I think I learned more on this one video than others I've seen here in utube. I am more proficient with Illustrator than Photoshop and I would like to merge these two powerful tools. On Photoshop by using my scanned sketches how do I go by coloring it with a watercolor landscape effect?

  • If you have just black & white sketches, and want to get a "painterly" effect then Corel Painter is the program for that. If you have a photo that already has color you can use either Photoshop or Corel Painter to achieve many traditional effects.

  • Thank you so much Mama for your unselfish attention to a nobody like me. I wish you more success cause you deserve it. I hope you don't get tired of beginners such as my self.

  • No one is "born" an "expert" All experts were once "beginners!"

  • i couldn't do without tablet now. :)

  • MamaShan has a beautiful way. Where a lot of PS tuts are busy trying to display their knowledge (read: ego) MamaS will patiently show the detail- she covers every little aspect. Encore ! This is a top class act.

  • Awe! Thanks collin9342...I love teaching and doing these vids! Makes me happy to hear you and others really do appreciate it. I'm humbled by it all, really!

  • Agree. It's easy to follow, not boring and fun to watch

  • Great video, But As just an idea, you should throw in a "Before and After" set of Pictures at the end.

    Just an idea.

  • Your're right...I keep forgeting to do that!

  • Another great usable tutorial! I see the the Walcom tablet is a must as I pretty much live in Photoshop. I'm sure it would make life much easier. Xmas is coming, maybe Santa will be good to me...any suggestions on the size I should get? Thanks again Mama Shan you rock!!

  • Personally, and for the money the 6x8 Intuos flavor is my favorite!

  • Thank you! I will search the web for some deals...Aloha~

  • Great Show

  • im still kinda new to photoshop, started playing about with it since may and I do kinda all right, i got 2 vids of my airbrushing on here but i get a lot of hassel because of this and that. unfortunately there noone nearby where i can do a course. What to do suggest?

  • go to lynda dot com and sign up. It's a great resource for online learning of tons of software programs. And of course, you can go to my site photoshopmama dot net and sign up for my Free Tips Ezine and watch vids in the Chores area!

  • thanks a lot! Have a nice day

  • I am retired. Just love MamaShan's tuts and her methods. lynda dot com I believe is v good but for someone who has to watch his pennies MS is the answer for me. Did someone say she 'rocks' Well my whole world shakes whenever she speaks.

  • How do you know all of this?

  • I suffer from O.P.D! Obsessive Photoshop Disorder! There's no cure!

  • Also, I've been an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop since version 5 and have been teaching all levels of digital imaging since 1999....and I'm STILL learning and discovering new things every day!

  • Lol, well you're awesome! I'm kind of jealous of your skills...

  • Awe! You can do it, too! You just have to loose some sleep! Exist on an average of 4 to 5 hours a night....and be willing to stay up and pull some all-nighters, too!

  • In a word - passion!

  • really cool...i been watching all of ur vedios

although i am in exam month...ur the best...buT u still dint answ my Question in kick off #2

    sad^-^

  • I really enjoyed doing this. :)

  • I'd love to see your b4/aft results. Post here or go to Mama's Forum at photoshopmama dot net!
