The original Japanese version is dragged out as well. The only thing different about the American version was the crappy dialogue and the background music. Thank God for Dragon Ball Z Kai, it's filler-free and much more straightforward,even the American version is a faithful adaptation (finally).
I never said anything about disliking the American version's music, I liked it! My only problem is the part where Gohan went SS2 for the first time. Seriously, Bruce should have composed something epic but he didn't.
The only thing I said was crappy was the dialogue.

I really enjoyed the show but hated this film mostly because they took Goku's character and made him a teenager who wants to fuck Chi Chi. In the anime, he was incredibly naive about this as was his overall nature and behaviour so to make him a teen to make this marketable was just disgraceful. Also, Master Roshi was a pervert in the anime but was also powerful and somehow loveable character because he was able to train Goku and teach him the Kamehameha. Not just a lecherous middle-aged man.

I think may be worse than Bay's raping of the Transformers name. It's hard to tell. Yes, I'm a fan of both, just so you know. So these movies are unholy horrors to me. But it's really really hard to tell right now. This movie made my Toonami childhood hurt terribly. Especially because I watched the original Dragon Ball series, not just DBZ.
Dragon Ball was more concise and plot-driven than the American DBZ, so watch it :). And yes, your description of DBZ is apt, but we love it anyways ;)

In this unaverse, every one has a "power level" If sertan people are given the abilaty to harnes that power with in than they can do those super powered things. This includes on Earth. Master Roshy is sapose to be a Old man and the casting was bad for this movie. Also, in the show, it is in the future. This movie was a fail. And sorry for the long coment.

Oh I remember reading the manga when I was a kid, and when I saw this movie I just saw the trailer and went. No! I'm not ruining my childhood with this piece of trash. I have still not seen it, but heard a lot about it.
The thing is I am a great fan of the Dragon Balls, the manga Not the anime, and I loved all the characters, the environment. And Then see...This thing with the modern world! I'm not suicidal.
My greatest complain about this is that the character is all wrong.
@LoveAhiru Bulma is suppose to be annoying, but also is an Inventor (NOT Guns) but portable boxes, yeah sounds silly. But my greatest hate is that Goku IS A TEENAGER! Goku is the spirit of innocent and that's what I liked about him, he was a child neither evil or an attention seeker. The pervert Sidekick nr 2, is Goku sensei, and the fact is in the manga he's a pervert but more for comedy relief. I do think they tried to include to many character in this movie, which where not needed.

@ERod2010 It´s not that simple. Many modern Hollywood movies suffer from that. There are so many differrent series and yes, some of them are like you say. But if you take a look at Death note or Code Geass, you might reconsider. If you look for bad-assitude, you should check the Hellsing OVA:s for an example. And in japanese of course because dubbing changes the dialogue and destroys the story. P.S. Ignore my username, I´m actually much more mature than that.
@ERod2010 Can Sort of understand, most of the popular anime shows are more about panty shoots and eyes that take up more than half your face. But then there is anime like Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Akira, Tokyo Godfathers (AWESOME!) and many more. My favorite animator is Hayao Miyazaki
While series like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z are more about the art with a lame story there are some anime with very excellent writing. My personal favorite series had stellar art but it was the characters and their personal struggles that really drove the series. I understand why you would think that due to majority of popular anime being that way. I am totally with you on being a story guy which is why I don't watch popular anime shows. Great review though ERod, this film was awful.

I tried to see it independently from Dragon Ball, since it's my fave anime, and even then it sucked balls. The action sequences sucked and the the plot made no sense. I could have adapted a better Dragon Ball movie. First, cast a kid, make him exactly like a Goku, find Bulma and Yamcha, and have old Piccolo as the villain and hatching an egg when Goku finally kills him after training with Master Roshi, who is killed by Piccolo and then revived with the Dragon Balls.

the one plot hole I found in this movie is if goku is ozaru and he and piccolo were destroying shit a THOUSAND YEARS AGO how can goku stillalive much less a teenager

dragonball z was one of the only animes i prefer to watch in english, the japanese dub was terrible and didnt fit the characters, but its allrigt if you didnt like it.
As you can see, this movie is a trilogy and could be more like a saga, with more of 5 movies, even 6 or 8. Too bad the one who made this didnt make his work or looks like has imagination. Well, actually, this movie was based in dragon ball, not dragon ball z. Dragon ball was the beginning of all and take place when Goku is a kid of 8 or 12 years old (dont remeber that part) but still, they didnt get anything acurated, Piccoro is suposse to be the last boss, the very last, at the beginning it was about search the spheres, later add a conqueror dreamer, training, later an army, training again, tournament, first Piccoro, training with god and last fight with the new Piccoro
you know what? This would have been perfect project for Michael Bay, think about it. Not a very dyverse complicated plot, just needs key characters and ofcourse the beautifully crafted action.

The guy has a great sense for how to make live action look like a cartoon AND he was the producer on Dragonball Evolution. He just should have been in the director's chair instead of producing.
You know this movie is not based on Dragonball "Z" its based on Dragonball. Z is the Sequel to the 1st Series. For american audiences it can be confusing, because Z came in the US first. Although later the first Series came out. Because i live in Germany i was watching the Release that was a german dub of the Japanese version (with some cuts). I personally love both Series (in german). I actually hate the Soundtrack of the american version. And yes i think Evolution is a piece of Shit.
Dragon ball z was made in a much, much different way than transformers. Dragon ball was developed in 1986 Transformer was a year after, comparing the 2 is retarded Period.
@Rio8D: Exactly, Transformers is actually based on a Japanese toyline. Daiclone, which the transformers "cartoon" (which actually is a weird mutation between a cartoon and an anime) is based on. Daiclone was to have an OVA, however that fell through when the us bought off the rights to the toy and the OVA. They changed it to Tranformers, finished the OVA ( cutting out everything), and created the kids "cartoon" and the toy. The transformers anime in Japan has more plot however...

the dragonballs were more a rip off of sonic the hedge because where you had seven balls that when put together brought limitless power in sonic the hedgehog you had the seven chaos emeralds that ALSO brought limitless power to those who brought them together also the characters are carbon copied from sonic the hedgehog
@paganism2009 the dragon balls had their limits and werent soley made to grant limitless power they were made for wishes, super sonic is widley believed to be an homage to super sayin goku and the chaos emeralds too, also dragonball released in '86 came before sonic '91 and established the characters traits and dbz also came in '86 and shadow came like 10 years later so he would be a copy of vegeta.

Oh I remember reading the manga when I was a kid, and when I saw this movie I just saw the trailer and went. No! I'm not ruining my childhood with this piece of trash. I have still not seen it, but heard a lot about it.
The thing is I am a great fan of the Dragon Balls, the manga Not the anime, and I loved all the characters, the environment. And Then see...This thing with the modern world! I'm not suicidal.
My greatest complain about this is that the character is all wrong.

@LoveAhiru Bulma is suppose to be annoying, but also is an Inventor (NOT Guns) but portable boxes, yeah sounds silly. But my greatest hate is that Goku IS A TEENAGER! Goku is the spirit of innocent and that's what I liked about him, he was a child neither evil or an attention seeker. The pervert Sidekick nr 2, is Goku sensei, and the fact is in the manga he's a pervert but more for comedy relief. I do think they tried to include to many character in this movie, which where not needed.

@ERod2010 It´s not that simple. Many modern Hollywood movies suffer from that. There are so many differrent series and yes, some of them are like you say. But if you take a look at Death note or Code Geass, you might reconsider. If you look for bad-assitude, you should check the Hellsing OVA:s for an example. And in japanese of course because dubbing changes the dialogue and destroys the story. P.S. Ignore my username, I´m actually much more mature than that.

@ERod2010 Can Sort of understand, most of the popular anime shows are more about panty shoots and eyes that take up more than half your face. But then there is anime like Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Akira, Tokyo Godfathers (AWESOME!) and many more. My favorite animator is Hayao Miyazaki

While series like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z are more about the art with a lame story there are some anime with very excellent writing. My personal favorite series had stellar art but it was the characters and their personal struggles that really drove the series. I understand why you would think that due to majority of popular anime being that way. I am totally with you on being a story guy which is why I don't watch popular anime shows. Great review though ERod, this film was awful.

@ERod2010: OVA, the americans finished it. But it wasn't as good as it was going to be in Japan. I myself like stoyline, but cartoons don't have that. Because of the fact they are for children, and usually are there to entertain children that don't like to be boggled down by some intense plot or critical thinking. Simple, kids are dumb. Again, they removed this from the english version to fit with the idea of cartoons. They do this a lot in dubs. I usually watch my anime subbed.

I LOLed at the beginning bit where you mentioned that the Japanese version was more concise. It's something of a joke over here in Asia, where there's this one arc where he's getting ready to throw the Kamehameha and then has a flashback that lasts several episodes.

I tried to see it independently from Dragon Ball, since it's my fave anime, and even then it sucked balls. The action sequences sucked and the the plot made no sense. I could have adapted a better Dragon Ball movie. First, cast a kid, make him exactly like a Goku, find Bulma and Yamcha, and have old Piccolo as the villain and hatching an egg when Goku finally kills him after training with Master Roshi, who is killed by Piccolo and then revived with the Dragon Balls.

As you can see, this movie is a trilogy and could be more like a saga, with more of 5 movies, even 6 or 8. Too bad the one who made this didnt make his work or looks like has imagination. Well, actually, this movie was based in dragon ball, not dragon ball z. Dragon ball was the beginning of all and take place when Goku is a kid of 8 or 12 years old (dont remeber that part) but still, they didnt get anything acurated, Piccoro is suposse to be the last boss, the very last, at the beginning it was about search the spheres, later add a conqueror dreamer, training, later an army, training again, tournament, first Piccoro, training with god and last fight with the new Piccoro

You know this movie is not based on Dragonball "Z" its based on Dragonball. Z is the Sequel to the 1st Series. For american audiences it can be confusing, because Z came in the US first. Although later the first Series came out. Because i live in Germany i was watching the Release that was a german dub of the Japanese version (with some cuts). I personally love both Series (in german). I actually hate the Soundtrack of the american version. And yes i think Evolution is a piece of Shit.

Dragon ball z was made in a much, much different way than transformers. Dragon ball was developed in 1986 Transformer was a year after, comparing the 2 is retarded Period.

@Rio8D: Exactly, Transformers is actually based on a Japanese toyline. Daiclone, which the transformers "cartoon" (which actually is a weird mutation between a cartoon and an anime) is based on. Daiclone was to have an OVA, however that fell through when the us bought off the rights to the toy and the OVA. They changed it to Tranformers, finished the OVA ( cutting out everything), and created the kids "cartoon" and the toy. The transformers anime in Japan has more plot however...

@paganism2009 the dragon balls had their limits and werent soley made to grant limitless power they were made for wishes, super sonic is widley believed to be an homage to super sayin goku and the chaos emeralds too, also dragonball released in '86 came before sonic '91 and established the characters traits and dbz also came in '86 and shadow came like 10 years later so he would be a copy of vegeta.
