@tubaTripper07 Our schools teach the arts from a European prospective. Composers and musicians such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Handel, and Mozart and time periods such as Baroque, Classical, and Romantic are taught as what is "right" or "the standard." If this be "right", then Jazz, Gospel and Hip-Hop are ALL wrong. It is a "universal language" because be it Beethoven or Beyonce, a quarter note is a quarter note. A true musician is able to appreciate the gift and the interpretation.
@tubaTripper07 You are the likes of a "copy cat." You hear someone say something and you repeat it... After you mentioned that this clip is not musical, you backed up your UNEDUCATED comment by saying its just "louder and louder." Music has something called Dynamics. This is what gives instruction to the musician on how to approach each note in the given selection. You uneducated people say louder and louder. As musicians throughout the World, WE say "forte" and "fortissimo."
@tubaTripper07 If all you could observe was "louder and louder," then you have NO credentials as a musician. The articulations, chords, tounging, contrasts, intonation, range, sforzandos, harmony, the list goes on. As good as this clip is, it is horrible and elementary to the progression of this section known as HORSEPOWER. You can settle this by either picking up your horn and attempting to try to do what HORSEPOWER DOES or ATTEMPTING to COMPOSE for Sousaphones on this level of composition.
@mikedaguy They are MARCHING tubas playing in an enclosed gymnasium. Perhaps they could have scaled it back to 5-6 players...there's a lot of power on that floor.
not trying to be an asshole..but just so you know those things your heard are forte pianos...its like a crescendo but you hit it hard go soft and then loud quick it sounds badass
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That was awful. I can't stand when people sit there and blast with awful tone and try to pass it off for a good centered sound. Ok great you can blow my face off, but can you play with a round sound, like the horn was meant to be played? I can't believe how many people are commenting positively on this! Yikes.
different types of bands exist than just our technical sound and its assholes like you that come off as jerks because you think your way of entertainment is the only way. contrary to popular belief most people dont want to see musical designs across a football field all the time. thats why every brass player doesnt jump in to drum corps. some people actually want their bands to play that way and until you get your credentials in music you need to get that conductors wand out of your ass.
i know its late to say this but dont listen to ass holes like LuminousFive those types are the ones who think that their pure technical style of play is the one and only way. and yeah i play like that too but i dont act an ass about it like some people do keep on doing wat you doing its always gonna be people showing they ass when they feel they got to be right.
gross man... I make a comment about not playing with a round sound and you feel the need to talk about my mother's privates? Real Mature. Grow up man.
i honestly have to disagree with you. They actually sound pretty good, and no im not a ignorant SWAC player from SU, TxSu, or Savannah State, im a MEAC Tubist
I played Sousaphone at VSU back in the early 90's. Former section leader. Now currently staff as the Tuba Advisor and videographer for VSU. Fromer Grand President of T-Phi-T
freaking bad ass jobs you guys, amazing stuff. i am a tuba palyer as well and if anyone has this stuff down on paper please let me know because i want to learn it and teac it to my section more than anything..
Sorry, no music for Horsepowers fanfares. The are all taught from section leader on down. Nothing is written out. But thanks for the complements and interest.
there arent very many schools like VSU that has excellent tuba section and a section that I wanna be in.This section makes me wanna transfer to the school to continue my education and be in the tuba section
we only have 6 tubas this year, last year 2, and i would love to do this , it would be cool, and you jus dont know how much i want to play this, please give me notes, or tel me how you do the fast part where he goes up and down..........please?
its double tounguing...its an excersize that takes lots of control and practice...and learn it by ear..thats wut i did..in my skool there are only 2 sousaphonist..and we got this DOWN PACK!!!!
Despite my concerns with this group's tone quality (or lack thereof), watching these videos makes my left shoulder hurt (in the good way). This type of excitement and enthusiasm is very important for students to see to keep them interested in music programs. Get these guys a fleet of Conn 20-Ks and a stack of Hellebergs or PT-88s, an annual battle show on ESPN, and some bigtime sponsors. Who needs winterguard or drumline?
that fanfare will knock any band out da way, it's so sexy, an it takes so much skill to tongue shit like that, an the way it's put together genius. The chords,... fuck there's nothing else to say, they good, great, suprior. Is there any chick's in their tuba section though?
There is one young lady currently in the section but she is not marching due to injury. She is the 4th female in the history of the section to march for VSU. But when you are with the section, there is male/female title, only tuba player or bandsman.
Hopefully, Mr. @tubaTripper07, HORSEPOWER taught you something. They are known for making others better. Goodnight.

the dynamic change was wonderful, but that sound is sick (as in ill/not pleasant)
stop being concerned with playing so damn loud and be musicians for once.

This is from 2005, look at some of their stuff over the next 5 years and tell me they're not musicians.
tubaTripper07 1 year ago
@tubaTripper07 regardless of how they've performed the past 5 years, this performance was very unmusical. Loud and louder.

bro ive seen it all
heard it all
actually take part in a band
and plan to in the future as well
been told ive had pretty good sound a few times
been told im pretty loud at times
but what im really getting at is
with all this, im quite aware of the fact that there is talent and things that i dont understand
and that i wouldnt judge
x2XtReMEx 3 years ago
i assure you
somewhere that is true talent
like here
and if asked to do it
could you?
could you play that loud while playing that fast?
i cant.
so i dont judge.
you probably shouldnt either.
