It's true that vocal lessons and techniques can enhance one's singing abilities, but only to a certain level. At the end it all comes down to natural talent. You might be able to hit all the right notes, but will those notes sound good? That depends on the person's natural voice, which cannot be taught.
Not true. Look at a famous singer today, listen to them sing and then listen to them talk. Most of the time the singers sound completely different from them singing. People can change their natural voice with a little training and practice.
Of course people sound differently talking and singing. Do you sing like you talk (or vice versa)? No.
All I'm saying is that some people just have better sounding SINGING voices than others. You can change how you use the voice, but you can't change the basic QUALITY of the sound that is innate to us.
And if one's voice can be changed with training and practice, then why does singers like Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus still sound like a duck when they sing, even with the help of autotune?
@aku192 i think you left out a huge factor. opinion, someone's voice doesn't necessarily dictate what sounds good. a trained voiced and ear does produce a "professional" tone, but it doesn't mean that everyone will like it.
@shimpudin: Yes but there are still some voices that are generally agreed upon and considered as "good" voices by the majority of people (i.e Whitney, Mariah, Celine, etc). In a way though, you also further validated my point that training has its limitations.
And you're right about the opinion thing (or "taste" as I'd like to call it). It varies from person to person.
All this crap about lung power and breathing is exactly what the vast majority of voice teachers promote, but the fact is, if one uses his/her vocal cords correctly, the rest takes care of itself: No smoke and mirrors.
That's interesting. I never thought about applying "technology" to singing. There has always been science applied to singing. Several vocal instructors point to anatomy and such... however it would be interesting to see exactly what the vibrations look like in comparison through this equipment.
your gay. don't try to preach us will your religious views on a fucking comment box about singing. And your not open minded because your religious. thats a contradiction.
I believe there are talents for certain things that are needed, but sometimes it comes down to subconcious understanding and muscle-memory, something that science can help with.
you need to understand your body in order to sing properly. the proper technique for singing starts from the top of the head down to your feet (seven points of posture: head erect, shoulders down, rib cage up, body aligned, hips squared, knees bent, feet apart)
singing is about air flow. it's true that our body already knows how to sing properly but many of us have to learn how to get out of the way and allow the body to do what it does naturally.

everyone cannot learn to sing. It's not only about air flow. There has to be something behind the technique to really sing well. Some people just don't have good voice (No matter what techniques they learn/master).
do you sing? because if you do you're learning from the wrong people
it's not just about air flow but the air is the sound so air is a huge part
i don't believe that people don't have good voices. i sang with a guy who was tone deaf and by his 3rd year of choir made it into all state and a friend who had the door slammed in his face by several directors saying there was no hope for him and after 2 months of classical technique class from my vocal mentor he made first chair for all state
No, I dont sing. Sang in a choir once tho. i understand that voices can be trained and people can learn to technically hit a note "correctly" and for choir singing, that's fine i guess. But it doesnt mean that their voice is pleasing to the ear. I know a guy who hits the "right" notes, but his voice has no depth. no life. There's something else to true singing. Its a gift. Just because you're on the radio or on a tv show or even are successful in a choir doesn't mean you can really sing.

Talent can not be taught.
Some techniques will improve your singing, but if the talent is not there... forget it.
