Loved it. I guess all you moaners didn't realise that this was written and directed by Rob and Doug. I got to speak to Rob about it in London and he told me what happened. They were really disappointed when the show never got picked up. So disappointed that they put this together in a last ditch attempt to keep the project alive.

British comedy is (usually) about class divides. As America doesn't have the same class divisions, the comedy has to rely on gags - a classic case being '2 people talking at once' which is a US staple and never used in the UK. Look at shows like The Office - David Brent is desperate to be a part of a higher class bracket which he'll never reach, Dawn and Tim cross class boundaries too. The US version can't use those nuances so is a different show - still pretty good, but different.

The second pilot was a one day shot at trying to get the show back on track.

We shot it in the old Peoples court stage in Hollywood.

This was produced by Rob and Doug, under exstream pressure.

I was the art director/ FX guy/ wardrobe/ you name it.

It was doomed and yes the original was the best to be sure.

But I tried to be true the the source with no time no money and under the gun at every step.

Also, for those of you wondering, the reason why the conversation in this one was with Rimmer instead of Cat is that they made Cat a female (played by Star Trek: DS9's Terry Farrell), and she was supposed to be more of a hard-ass and risk-taker. Still, didn't realize Chris Eigeman (Rimmer) couldn't act in this.

And before the Brits get too high and mighty about their comedy, produce 24 episodes in 8 months of a show every single year and see if the quality is still there.
