i have a three level cage for my 2 winter white hamsters. and instead of using the tubes to get to the next level, they sometimes climb up the cage. does anyone elses hamster do that? haha

Nice video. You have a nice hamster. I have a hamster of a similar species (yours is a Winter White Hamster in its regular color, and mine is a Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster). The two species behave similarly, and this video reminded me of my hamster. Your hamster seems to be well taken care of.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but this is actually me in the video. One of my friends posted it under his account. Flurstinburg died a couple of years ago from old age... but he was a friendly little guy to the end. What I liked about the cage was 1) that the door opened downward so he had a ledge to perch on, 2) it was easy to connect to other cages to create a hamster mansion, and 3) it was easy to disconnect and clean.

The cage is a Critter Trail by Super Pet. I don't know which model it is, but I have two and I love them :) They're cute cages and they are easy to clean.

I used to have a really friendly parakeet, and I followed the same method as training a bird. If he's mean and bites from the beginning, take him back. His cage is his home; don't go grabbing around at him in there. I put his cage next to my desk so I could talk to him and he got used to me being around. I held him a lot, such as whenever I watched TV. Bribery (esp. with sunflower seeds) works. If you want to take him out, DO NOT sneak up on him or chase him around with your hand and scare him.
If he was sleeping, I would open his cage door (it rattled and made noise) and talked until he peeked his head up and recognized that I was there. Then I moved my hand in and offered treats like I did in the video, and then I carefully took him out. Be gentle but persistent, and if he gets freaked out then leave him alone and try again later. After a while, I think he associated me with food and so he came running to the door any time I opened it. Be patient and he will become a great friend!

It's so much better to tame your hamster because then you can hold them and stroke them and also the hamster itself has a more interesting life. Most people I know who have hamsters won't even pick them up cos they haven't tamed them and they bite
I never let him run around wild or anything, but I'd sit out on the floor with him sometimes and let him explore (always watching what he was getting into). Flurstinburg didn't really like those balls that let them run around the house, and so I only put him in one when I cleaned his cage and only for about 10 minutes max (and I still sort of kept my eye on him).
at first, i wore gloves and now my hamster loves my black gloves. i am starting to use my hands and now she bites me. when you first got your hamster, did he bite you too?
No he didn't bite. The only time he nibbled me was the first time I started wearing a new perfume on my wrist, and I think it smelled like food to him. He eventually got used to it and I think it helped him recognize me... he definitely preferred me over my friends.

Flurstinburg was a great pet. My advice to people thinking about getting a hamster is to pick one out from the store that's calm and then just be very gentle with it once you get it home. My roommate bought a winter white that was really hyper and mean from the beginning, and no matter what we did to try and tame him, he stayed mean. Thus, pick one out that's friendly.
Try and spend as much time as possible with your hamster. Flurstinburg and I watched TV together. Also, first thing in the morning, I'd fill his food bowl and spend a couple minutes holding him if he felt like it. And then when I came home, I'd give him a couple treats. He recognized my sound, and when I came home, he'd run from wherever he was to the cage door and wait for me to give him a snack. He really liked sunflower seeds and broccoli.

Flurstinburg didn't really like those balls that let them run around the house, and so I only put him in one when I cleaned his cage and only for about 10 minutes max (and I still sort of kept my eye on him).

at first, i wore gloves and now my hamster loves my black gloves. i am starting to use my hands and now she bites me. when you first got your hamster, did he bite you too?

not really.... when i held him he just licked my fingers then started eating it.....well he was biting it but in a friendly way

No he didn't bite. The only time he nibbled me was the first time I started wearing a new perfume on my wrist, and I think it smelled like food to him. He eventually got used to it and I think it helped him recognize me... he definitely preferred me over my friends.

They told me at the store that it was a dwarf... but he got awfully big so maybe he was just a regular winter white and not a dwarf.

I got a winter white, his name is jerry, he's grey. he is not a dwarf but wasn't labeled a dwarf, he is just a month old though.

Flurstinburg was a great pet. My advice to people thinking about getting a hamster is to pick one out from the store that's calm and then just be very gentle with it once you get it home. My roommate bought a winter white that was really hyper and mean from the beginning, and no matter what we did to try and tame him, he stayed mean. Thus, pick one out that's friendly.

Try and spend as much time as possible with your hamster. Flurstinburg and I watched TV together. Also, first thing in the morning, I'd fill his food bowl and spend a couple minutes holding him if he felt like it. And then when I came home, I'd give him a couple treats. He recognized my sound, and when I came home, he'd run from wherever he was to the cage door and wait for me to give him a snack. He really liked sunflower seeds and broccoli.
