@Thepsuedofilms Here's my suggestion - either watch someone else's reviews or turn the volume down. It's comments like these which make me wonder why I bother producing content free of charge on YT. I'm moving to a pay-per-view model.
@cameralabs lol i said this to Thepsuedo films, "He is from New Zealand.. meaning he has an Australlian accent.. It is common of Ausies to actually go up in pitch of there speach at the end of a sentence.. Maybe you should study accents before you go dogging on other people? Otherwise, find some other expert to review some of the best items on the market..."
@cameralabs I know his comment was made seven months ago, but please don't pay any attention to Thepsuedofilms or other internet trolls. I love your videos! You're my favorite reviewer on YT by far. I love both the format of your videos AND the cadence of your voice. Thepsuedofilms was just being an asshat. So, yeah. I think you're great.
@Thepsuedofilms A little bird was sitting on a power pole line when a horse passed bye and dropped some hit on the road. The little bird flew down and had it's breakfast of the shit then resumed it position on the power line, and because it had a full belly and was happy started to sing. A passing hawk heard the little bird singing so swooped down and ate it. The moral of this story @Thepsuedofilms is if your mouth is full of shit, keep it shut ;-)
@Unicorn1940 I might take you seriously if you'd constructed that retort with decent spelling and grammar. I your mouth can't deliver a good paragraph, keep it shut ;-)

@Thepsuedofilms I firmly believe you owe Gordon many apologies. He is very articulate and very knowledgeable in his field of expertise. Hi. When I press the function button on my G10 I get the overlay function menu down the left of the screen (discussed at 5.35 in this video), but the only two selections I can highlight are the two at the bottom - I can't move up to the five options above. Any ideas? Thanks.
@KoSoVaAnGeL What on earth are you talking about? At that point in the video I'm panning from left to right, not zooming. Please ensure you know what you're talking about before casting incorrect aspersions on others. I'll accept your apology in advance.
@cameralabs Honestly this camera does zoom in and out while recording. How come this one that you have does not? Do you want me to show you a video which will show that it does zoom in while recording? The Canon G10 does zoom in and out while recording. Maybe you got a Chines version? Mine says Made in Japan.
I am sorry if you feel offended but I did not want to offend you. All I want to say is that you missed something good about this camera which is zooming in and out while recoring.
@KoSoVaAnGeL The G10 cannot optically zoom while filming - it can only use a digital zoom which just crops and enlarges a portion in the middle of the frame, thereby reducing quality. A digital zoom is not the same as an optical zoom.
Hi sorry to bug you one last time but which would be the better choice for taking close up photos of tattoos in low light? a g10 or a rebel xs? the main goal for me is to be able to capture fine detail in low light and still be able to have a super clear 8x10 photo printed. thank you soooo much for all your great reviews!!!!!!!!!!
@jqwalls For good quality in low light, you'll need a DSLR, but they can't focus as close as a G10 / G11 without fitting a macro lens. So it depoends how much you want to spend. a DSLR with a macro lens would be perfect, but it'll cost a lot more than a G10 / G11. PS - again whatever you buy, please do it through one of the partner stores at cameralabs . com!
I have this camera for about 1.5 years now and i am averaging 800-900 shots per charge with the screen on!! i have taken almost 10000 pictures with this camera and the only thing that annoys me is that in low light is not so good and the fps speed is quite slow for such a camera!!!!
All these reviews never demonstrate ACTUAL TAKING PICTURES... Main interest here is focus speed, button response, shot after shot performance, non-stop performance. it's FUNDAMENTAL.
Not interested in photo and image quality. Interested in response, speed, buffer capacity, "the feel". Actual physical qualities that are better demonstrated in video, rather than a narrative.
HELP!!!! Hey! I got this camera, but im still a begginer. I cant figure out how to do long exposure photography! Could someone please explain how to on this camera? Thanks in advance!!!
could anyone advise me whether the g10 has significantly better image quality than the g7? I understand that because of the lack of RAW this would be a factor but as both are very similiar in features and that's what is important to me. I don't know if I'd be able to embrace RAW if I'm taking great pictures already :)
Hey mate, i'm stuck here between to cameras. I've seen the reviews plus read the ones on ur website but i can't choose to get the powershot g10 or the PowerShot SX20IS. It would be nice to know your personal opinion on those two and also which one do would you suggest. Thanks a lot, i'm expectant to hear from you.
Hey, he hasn't answered to me yet and i'm starting to doubt if he will haha anyways i've decided to go for the PowerShot SX20IS. I'm not sure wether it is the right decision or not but as soon as i test it i could let u know. I've used the g10 because a friend has it, but still i wanted to try the sx20 cause of different reasons. I'll tell u how good or bad it was. Cheers mate.
hey mike, i've already gotten the canon sx 20 is and it's simply amazing. It has covered all of my needs which are basicaly and excellent macro and a good resolution on panoramic views. i haven't stoped playing with the zoom feature plus the different modes this camera has. Hope this helps a bit or if u can be a bit more specific on your doubts i'll be glad to help you.
I try in store, the most powerful point and shoot out of over 50 camera i try in store. Very fast start up and great picture. I actually more impressive then some of entry level dslr with their lame kit lens picture quality. Only cons is can't shoot video but picture is real nice, no doubt best compact camera out there
it already has. they're currently selling the g11 at bestbuy. but it has less features than the g10, the only great thing about the g11 is the flip out lcd screen.
It doesn't have less features than the G10.. the only thing that went lower is the Pixel count which fell to 10MP.. which is better for using high ISO without producing much noise.. also it has much better pixel ratio.. also the flash sync is 4x faster..
lol at my cannon g10 when messing around the image size i cant seem to put it on the RAW size ? beisde the Widescreen i was surprised when i saw it here but cant seem to see it in my cam wth
It might be the shooting mode you're in. If you're in auto, try switching to the programmable, manual, or aperture/shutter priority modes and then see if you can use RAW.
If you have this camera and think the case they sell in Northern America/ UK sucks, they check out the one they sell in Asia.
dooimagen (dot) co m/images/large/279573.jpg
I ordered mine from Tokyo, it took over 2 weeks to arrive. And was totally worth it. Sexy design, screws into the tripod mounting slot of the G10, looks awesome.
Are the ISO Noise issues really that much of an obtrusive problem in regards to image quality at higher ISO settings? I've read from a couple reviewers that the noise at anything over a couple hundred ISO is annoying. How would you compare this camera to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3?
I'd recommend checking the High ISO Noise results pages on my reviews of both cameras at cameralabs . com - then you can see for yourself how they compare...
Someone offered to take a group photo for my group of friends recently, and the first thing she said when she took it from me was "wow that's a big screen!"
It's refreshing being able to check the focus using the LCD for the first time too. With smaller LCDs (my previous Sony DSC-V1 was good but had a screen about 1/6 the size) it's not easily done.
I bought this camera a few weeks ago and it's awesome. About as good a point-and-shoot as you can probably buy right now.
My new G10 came along for the ride on a camping trip the other weekend, and 200 photos later, the same battery (I never needed to use my spare) was still reading full charge when I came home!
I've got some very pretty landscapes and even decent night time shots using long exposure (and a steady surface to rest it on)
I recently bought the G10, after reading through plenty of reviews and deciding to make a choice between the HX-1 and the G10. I went into the store, and held onto the HX-1 and said, no way, this thing feels like a toy! It has a nasty plasticky lightweight elcheapo feel about it that i just did not like, whereas the G10 feels solid and strong like an oild Rangefinder Canon 35mm. The Sony may take good pics, but there's too much Playstation DNA in it for me!
I keep this camera with me at all times. When my 5D Mark II isn't handy, it's a great workhorse that captures fantastic images in decent light. It's built like a tank and has every feature a photographer could want. Where it's definitely not a DSLR is in low light. You'll need a good noise reduction app in your tool kit if you shoot at ISO over 400. I use Noise Ninja profiled for the G10 in Aperture with RAW.
I bought this camera and you are able to zoom in a bit while recoding video, but it does not zoom like the sx10 is zoom. Just keep in mind that it's a PHOTO CAMERA first with a video recorder option added to it. Great camera though. I you work it right you can blurr the background or the foreground while your subject remainst in focus.
I have no desire to buy this camera I just watched this video for fun. This is a great review and really enjoyed it. Its a great relief from reading endless reviews online. Keep it up cameralabs!
I`m looking for a high-end compact that focuses by moving lens elements that are behind the diaphragm, so that the entrance pupil of the lens does not move at all. This would enable me to stack photos in Helicon software, perhaps from 1:1 to infinity so as to get infinite depth-of-field, without parallax issues. I understand the Canon A710 and 620 definitely have this characteristic. Would you know if the G10 does too? Thanks
One of the drawbacks i'm hearing about this camera is its problems with high ISO shots. However, as a bit of a n00b, i'm unsure how this would affect me (or whether it would even be noticeable) when using it as an enthusiast's holiday camera.
Would greatly appreciate any help.
is this the top camera for this product bracket, or is there a superior alternative?
Any chance of a review of the IXUS 990 IS? I'm trying to work out what compact to use as a pocketable video recording backup to my 40D when traveling. Either the G10, the SX1, or the IXUS 990.
You're also very lucky to live in Queenstown, as you have great subject matter to test the cameras on. I'm heading over there in July and will give my 40D and Tokina 12-24 a work-out.
I can't promise anything, but may do the 990IS in the future. In the meantime, have a great time in QT, and keep an eye open for me snapping away! PS - I have a list of tips for QT in the Travel section of the cameralabs . com forum...
This has got to be the best G10 review on YouTube! It's so informative. I want this camera so bad. I wanted the G9 but then the 10 came out and I fell in love.
It's actually a good thing that you cant zoom while filming as it is always a horrible thing to do and the mark of the amateur. You will notice that you rarely see a zoom during a professional film unless for a very specific effect. The zoom was invented to allow users to preframe shots as wanted, not to move forward and back during filming, for that you use a dolly. Anyway, the g10 is a still camera, the movie function is a superfluous.function. Get a dedicated vidcam.
which one its better ? panasonic lumix lx3 or canon powershot g10 ? i was consider to get canon g10 but my friend told me that the panasonic lx3 are better ? huh ,.. im so confuse !
This was a great video for anyone considering the purchase of the G 10, or for someone who has just purchased and is not totally familiar with all of this camera's features. Thanks
Hello, I currently have a JVC video camcorder with the ability to take photos. I was never really satisfied with its image quality because there always seems to be a lot of noise in the picture. Anyways i was checking out the G10 in the store and i was surprised to find that the same problem was visible on the screen.I tried changing the ISO and a couple of other things but nothing seemed to reduce this noise (almost looks likes dancing pixels). Anyways, any clue what is causing this?
I have now the Canon Powershot G 10. Wonderful camera! One question.. the LCD screen is so big that I get finger prints on it real easy. 1) does this matter and how to avoid? would the ant glare screen be useful?
Yes, all Canon models with the latest DIGIC 4 processor create movies in the Quicktime MOV format. There's full details in my review at cameralabs . com...
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but there is one fairly important feature that did not survive the transfer from G9-G10. I was surprised to see that the Time Lapse mode has been completely omitted. (If anyone knows otherwise let me know). I found this to be more than just a gimmick and was sad to see it missing. Also, am i wrong in saying that the G9 actually had better video resolution? (wasn't it like 1024 or something?)
Thanks Gordon, you did a great job explaining the G 10. Am going to Italy soon and want a camera that will take some nice photos, I just hope I can remember all that when I want to take that quick photo of a live time Thanks.
Do you film these reviews from your own home or at an office? Either way, I noticed you have a beautiful view. Great compact as well. Cannon has some really nice compacts. I only have the Powershot A590IS, but still the quality is unbelievable. No HD with the G10 is upsetting though. A lot of newer compacts are getting at least 720p video recording.
Can you see the results on the display when changing the aperture in Av mode, without taking the photo? If you want blurred background, for example, and change the aperture, are going to see that on the display? Sorry for the dumb question :|
That's not a dumb question at all! What you're asking for is called a depth-of-field preview, but sadly the G10 and most other compacts as far as I know don't offer it. But then with most compacts, the depth of field is already large even with small f-numbers, so the out-of-focus effect is hard to achieve - see the gallery in the G10 review at cameralabs . com...
It depends what you're looking for - zoom range or the most pixels in the image. Take a look at the results and gallery pages on the G10 and FZ28 reviews at cameralabs . com to see which you prefer. There's also examples of their zoom ranges on the features pages.
That's very kind of you! I'd have thought regular viewers of my videos and visitors to cameralabs . com may have been getitng a bit bored of them by now!
what you guys recomend me the g10 or the sx10is?is zoom better than megapixels?i like the retractile screen odf the sfx10 but the lack of raw also is important?i am a point and shoot user but the price is almost the same.please i need your expertise guys.thankz
It really depends which features are most important to you. If you want the 20x zoom and flip-out screen, then the SX10 IS is a better choice, but as you said, if you prefer RAW and the style of the G10, then maybe it would be better - only you know which features are more important to you personally! But feel free to discuss your options further in the cameralabs forum...
With 25 Mega Pixel 8 times zoom High def Wide angle/screen all the Bells and Whistles ..like a larger grip, Higher new ISO...great..5 Inch HD Screen Digi image Senor 6 by then...cheers to Canon
Does the g10 still have the mode where if you have it focus on one color that it will bring out that color and everything else will be black and white? Its a common feature in all the other canons, and I was thinking of getting this one and thats my faveorite feature and if it doesn't have it I dont know if im going to want it.
Nice cam on paper, but for it's price customer can get DSLR like Pentax K-m which is still small in terms of size (especially with DA21 or DA40mm pancake lens = pocker camera), but image quality is simply different level :)
i can't help but wonder if a g10 will suffer from dusty lens problems as the previous g9. i've had first hand experience and bunch of problems with that, so i'm afraid of the same issue arising again. for my current needs, i'm thinking of maybe trying out the sx1, so can't wait for your review on that one. always enjoying watching your very interesting videos.
As soon as I saw "Canon Powershot G10" I was freaking out, I just bought a G9 this summer and i've been thoroughly enjoying it. But I see the improvements are minor. From 12.1 MP to 14.7 I think you said, not much of a difference I guess. The improved face detection though, is Fantastic. All in all, it seems quite close to the G9. Panic session over.
Is this camera a good choice for shooting action sequences?

How long do you all think it will be until the next model comes out?
krayzgerman 2 years ago
it already has. they're currently selling the g11 at bestbuy. but it has less features than the g10, the only great thing about the g11 is the flip out lcd screen.
truthbehindlove 2 years ago
It doesn't have less features than the G10.. the only thing that went lower is the Pixel count which fell to 10MP.. which is better for using high ISO without producing much noise.. also it has much better pixel ratio.. also the flash sync is 4x faster..

lol at my cannon g10 when messing around the image size i cant seem to put it on the RAW size ? beisde the Widescreen i was surprised when i saw it here but cant seem to see it in my cam wth
LaZ040 2 years ago
on some canon dslrs you have to be in one of the semi-manual modes such as Tv or Av or full manual to get raw. I suspect that it is the same here.
zachsilvey 2 years ago
It might be the shooting mode you're in. If you're in auto, try switching to the programmable, manual, or aperture/shutter priority modes and then see if you can use RAW.

If you have this camera and think the case they sell in Northern America/ UK sucks, they check out the one they sell in Asia.

I ordered mine from Tokyo, it took over 2 weeks to arrive. And was totally worth it. Sexy design, screws into the tripod mounting slot of the G10, looks awesome.
See the reviews it gets on Amazon.
It's called the SC-DC60A
Just my $0.02

I leave the bottom of the case on, just take the top off and shove it in my pocket :)

How does this camera compare to the Sony Cybershot 270? Also how does it compare to the Panasonic TZ7?
np67 2 years ago
It's nice to know that Canon at least fixed one issue that was evident from the G9, and that was the relatively low-resolution LCD screen.
TheReapersSon 2 years ago
Are the ISO Noise issues really that much of an obtrusive problem in regards to image quality at higher ISO settings? I've read from a couple reviewers that the noise at anything over a couple hundred ISO is annoying. How would you compare this camera to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3?
TheReapersSon 2 years ago
I'd recommend checking the High ISO Noise results pages on my reviews of both cameras at cameralabs . com - then you can see for yourself how they compare...

Someone offered to take a group photo for my group of friends recently, and the first thing she said when she took it from me was "wow that's a big screen!"
It's refreshing being able to check the focus using the LCD for the first time too. With smaller LCDs (my previous Sony DSC-V1 was good but had a screen about 1/6 the size) it's not easily done.
diffusedlight 2 years ago
I bought this camera a few weeks ago and it's awesome. About as good a point-and-shoot as you can probably buy right now.
My new G10 came along for the ride on a camping trip the other weekend, and 200 photos later, the same battery (I never needed to use my spare) was still reading full charge when I came home!
I've got some very pretty landscapes and even decent night time shots using long exposure (and a steady surface to rest it on)
:)

how does this camera go against Sony H-10 or HX-1?
fallenembers08 2 years ago
I recently bought the G10, after reading through plenty of reviews and deciding to make a choice between the HX-1 and the G10. I went into the store, and held onto the HX-1 and said, no way, this thing feels like a toy! It has a nasty plasticky lightweight elcheapo feel about it that i just did not like, whereas the G10 feels solid and strong like an oild Rangefinder Canon 35mm. The Sony may take good pics, but there's too much Playstation DNA in it for me!

ah i see. well ive got a nikkon now so i dont have to worry :P

I use Noise Ninja profiled for the G10 in Aperture with RAW.
ktbeatty 2 years ago
I bought this camera and you are able to zoom in a bit while recoding video, but it does not zoom like the sx10 is zoom. Just keep in mind that it's a PHOTO CAMERA first with a video recorder option added to it. Great camera though. I you work it right you can blurr the background or the foreground while your subject remainst in focus.
xxMcQuackxx 2 years ago
Remember the zooming while filming with the G10 is digital, not optical - so you do lose quality while doing so.

Good review, thanks.
Thanks
criticsare2apenny 2 years ago
Good question, but I'm afraid I don't know, sorry! Feel free to ask in the cameralabs forums though!

Great review as usual.

PS - I have a list of tips for QT in the Travel section of the cameralabs . com forum...

i have a couple of questions "Cameralabs" : does the image stabilizer have any effect on the camera when it's not shaking ?
and can the camera use its zoom while having a lens attached to the camera?
abdulelahqutub 2 years ago
It's actually a good thing that you cant zoom while filming as it is always a horrible thing to do and the mark of the amateur. You will notice that you rarely see a zoom during a professional film unless for a very specific effect. The zoom was invented to allow users to preframe shots as wanted, not to move forward and back during filming, for that you use a dolly. Anyway, the g10 is a still camera, the movie function is a superfluous.function. Get a dedicated vidcam.

Aannon 3 years ago
Yes, all Canon models with the latest DIGIC 4 processor create movies in the Quicktime MOV format. There's full details in my review at cameralabs . com...
cameralabs 3 years ago
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but there is one fairly important feature that did not survive the transfer from G9-G10. I was surprised to see that the Time Lapse mode has been completely omitted. (If anyone knows otherwise let me know). I found this to be more than just a gimmick and was sad to see it missing. Also, am i wrong in saying that the G9 actually had better video resolution? (wasn't it like 1024 or something?)
Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

You're absolutely right, and I've mentioned this in my full review of the G10 at cameralabs . com - see the video section on the features page...

Do you film these reviews from your own home or at an office? Either way, I noticed you have a beautiful view. Great compact as well. Cannon has some really nice compacts. I only have the Powershot A590IS, but still the quality is unbelievable. No HD with the G10 is upsetting though. A lot of newer compacts are getting at least 720p video recording.
devilcry20005 3 years ago
Thanks, they're filmed around the Queenstown New Zealand area...

Can you see the results on the display when changing the aperture in Av mode, without taking the photo? If you want blurred background, for example, and change the aperture, are going to see that on the display? Sorry for the dumb question :|
cyb3r031 3 years ago
That's not a dumb question at all! What you're asking for is called a depth-of-field preview, but sadly the G10 and most other compacts as far as I know don't offer it. But then with most compacts, the depth of field is already large even with small f-numbers, so the out-of-focus effect is hard to achieve - see the gallery in the G10 review at cameralabs . com...

It depends what you're looking for - zoom range or the most pixels in the image. Take a look at the results and gallery pages on the G10 and FZ28 reviews at cameralabs . com to see which you prefer. There's also examples of their zoom ranges on the features pages.

what you guys recomend me the g10 or the sx10is?is zoom better than megapixels?i like the retractile screen odf the sfx10 but the lack of raw also is important?i am a point and shoot user but the price is almost the same.please i need your expertise guys.thankz
masterpatric07 3 years ago
It really depends which features are most important to you. If you want the 20x zoom and flip-out screen, then the SX10 IS is a better choice, but as you said, if you prefer RAW and the style of the G10, then maybe it would be better - only you know which features are more important to you personally! But feel free to discuss your options further in the cameralabs forum...
