i just ordered a 1lb of red worms! i'm excited to get them, but am concerned about how cold it is and their transit. hope they are alive when they get to CA!
So I suppose that temperature and such would affect their eating habits? A room at 70 degrees Fahrenheit would be optimal? Odor? Can I have one near my waste basket in my kitchen with no worries?
@backyardsounds 70 degrees is a pretty good temperature for red worms, so you shouldn't have a problem with that. Like tuffdawg94 said, if you take good care of your bin, no bad smells. The biggest problem people run into is wet bins. They get to wet over time from all the fruits and veggies people feed them. You will want to add some dry bedding with every feeding to make sure the bin doesn't get too wet.
@backyardsounds They can eat up to half their weight in compost a day. Meaning if you have 2 lbs of red worms, they can eat up to 1 lb of material per day!
Yes, they actually eat newspaper. You may not want to use magazines with a shiny coating as the coating is an inorganic material that doesn't break down (in a reasonable amount of time) and can't be eaten by worms.
I wouldn't see why not. The worms are raised on an organic diet, so they should be good for your fish. You may want to rinse the worms off first if they have some dirt on them when you pick them up... Just dip them in a bowl of water then drop them in your aquarium should work just fine!
