I wonder why the 1st movement gets so much attention, when anyone who knows Beethoven's works would have observed that the creator almost always leaves the best for the last. If the opening is "fate knocking on the door", then the mesmerising transition from minor to major, from darkness to blazing light, here he in music shows his titanic persona which has "ceased fate by the throat" & triumphantly overcome it.
according to my point of view karajan is the best conductor when it comes to the 5th symphony of beethoven..but this is mighty close..a treat to hear (and watch)..truely music breaks all boundaries.
A dream in my youth...and today a gift I give myself. Bernstein...great, and Beethoven...divine !

An amazing piece of music.
Shame about the cut though, but I guess that's what had to happen with the attaca end to the 3rd movement.
