Series one deserves more credit. There is some really great comedy within it. However, it is like watching a different show from the other three series. The characters are not as strong as they are in the other three series.

This episode, and possibly The Witchsmeller Persuviant were the highlights of this series. Overall though it wasn't very good. I think Ben Elton taking over the writing from Rowan Atkinson helped it a great deal.

season 1 was expensive and the characters weren't good enough except Lord Percy; Baldrick was too intelligent and Blackadder too dumb.
