What a great little gem this is. Didn't know that Jeff Lynne was the creator of this song! Noow I understand why I like it. I remember why I noticed this song on television in the first place. It was because of the Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV in the video clip. Smile! Olaf Roeten / Zagato_Olaf
I cant claim to know why this song was originally written. However, I do know 'The Story of [ME]'...... It begins, '[ME] is a woman I used to dream about as a child. She lived in a part of Heaven with her husband. She didn't know what 'Heaven' was.' It's an up and coming event, but a few have known about her through the millenia. I can't give away much more than that. This song fits the story well. Thanx for sharing it. :-)
I'm sorry but I still don't understand this video....I understand the song, but I can't wrap the two together....:( Metaphores are usually easy for me.... I'm a fan of Don and Phil...Love the song!
I finally found this song!! OMG first time I heard it on the radio and I was completely amazed by it beauty, but I heard the radio guy it was performed by "The Honey Brother". At the time, there wasn´t Youtube, or internet tools, and it was almos imposible to find it. Sooo frustraiting.... and now.. It was so simple!! just put Story of me and there you go.. served as many times as you want to.. lol so hillarius..
Yes, I heared it back in 1984 in a restaurant and never knew the name of the song. I searched for 26 years after this song and today 14.01.11 I found it. I did not know that Jeff Lynne wrote this song, and that's why this slow is so enchanting. If I ever get married I'm concidering this song to be played as first and I have added it to my very short list. There are many other slow "gems". Dj's should use more imagination then "The lady in red" Chris De Burgh. PLAY THIS! ;)
Don drove them to this place. The woman was Don's elusive dream of freedom. She looked at him in the mirror and ran away. Notice his clothes changed. Next, she was at the head of the table. Again Don's clothes changed. He was on her right, a place of importance. She saw him, ran away, breaking the empty glass to pieces. Don's clothes changed again, this time the brothers both are sitting at the head of the table closer. She goes back to sleep. They leave this dream together with Phil driving.
@belovia50 In the new post, "It's ALL About the Story of the Everly Brothers," Phil and Don Everly are interviewed concerning this video, and some insight is given as to their feelings about the song. They definitely saw parallels between the song and their individual lives, and the separate entity that was their "Everly Brothers" career.
@belovia50 Wasn't Phil driving at the beginning of the video? Seems to me he got out of the car on the driver's side....Did Phil's amazing harmony drive the Everlys' career??? Or Don's amazing lead vocals??? This poses so many questions.
@justmusicandme It depends where the video was made. If it were in the US, Phil would be the driver, but in the UK, then Don would be driving. I thought I saw a steering wheel on Don's side. I do believe they made this in the UK. I could be wrong, though. lol.
I think the girl is a ghost of the past. She breaks the glass, thus the spell, and they are closer afterwards. Notice they are sitting closer in the end, and she goes back to sleep.
lilewdbug.. I agree, she is is a ghost! When they arrive they are in present day clothes, but when they enter the house they become part of the past (hence change of clothing). The spell is broken when the glass breaks & when they leave they have same clothes on as when they arrived. If you listen to the lyrics.. it tells the story.. pain, heartbreak, loneliness, rescue me... waiting.... waiting for dawn's caress and the ecstasy that might have been, instead of sorrow! Beautiful song!
This is so enchanting, don't you think? I'm so glad you agree about the meaning too. Belovia asked my opinion as to what this girl had to do with the story. That's the only thing I can see. Bless you, dear.
I asked myself, what has this woman got to do with their story?" I really love this video. I've watched it so many times. Thank you for putting it on here.
Just want to say a BIG Thank You to whoever took the time to convert and post this video. This is an all time favourite of mine that is nigh impossible to get hold of. I went to see them in London when the album this song came from was released, and it remains a very firm favourite of mine. So THANK YOU!!!! Whoever you are.
words [last part] And now I'm walking right back to you And all along I never really knew That there was sorrow to come and I thought there'd be ecstasy That's the story of me And now I'm walking right back to you And all along I never really knew That it's so easy to see that's how it's meant to be And that's the story of me Story of me, That's the story of me
@AGibsonJ I dont know if I thanked you by then... but since I come around over and over and I still SOOOO love this song, THANKS A LOT! This must be one of the most significant songs ever! And I DO have a LOT of songs in my discs. What do you think about the video? I have read different ideas, but it is really curious. It adds up SO much to the song, which was already a piece of art, but with this video, I think I could write a book about it.
@GOLVEL, You're welcome, I love this song too. The song was written for the Everly Brothers and I remember Don saying it's based on their life. Jeff Lynne cleverly, wove a bit of mystery into the story which makes it so intriguing and keeps everyone guessing at the meaning. I wonder if Jeff has spoken about this song in interviews?
@AGibsonJ It would be nice to try to find out. And yeah, I really think this song should be known by many more... its so sad that it will probably remain in a dark spot. Man, I feel so inspired... it really takes me somewhere else... to a place where i never was... and yet feels like home. Lovely.
O-M-G!!! SO LONG looking for this!!! WONDERFUL!!! Thank you SO much!!! This is amazing!!! No words enough to describe!!! GOLDEN... a treasure!!! (Guess kind of clear I like this song).
I think this is the best song the Everly Brothers ever did and, of course, it was written by the most talented musician of the Rock era, Jeff Lynne! This song is very well-constructed and the video for it seems very fitting.
I own the album. I love the album. Two of my favorite composers with Paul and Jeff. Match that with maybe the 2 greatest harmonizers of all time. What more can you ask for? Oh I know, a CD copy. Ed

Maybe she is signifying their Muse? Lynne used that idea very well in Xanadu...Great that they got back together.

I saw them back in 86 at "sandstone" in KS. we actually
met them at their hotel after the show, their a class act.
Took time to talk to us . Probably the best harmonies in the buisness.

GOLVEL 3 years ago
Words for Golvel, [in sections]
part 1...
Rescue me, before my dreams have flown away
Rescue me, take me back with you again
The lonely hours I wait for dawn's caress
I can't forget, the silence of the loneliness
Destiny, I wrote the book about the game
Destiny, now I've learned how to take the pain
Try as I may I can't explain the way I'm feeling now
Try as I may I can't explain
AGibsonJ 3 years ago
words part 2...
And now I'm walking right back to you
And all along I never really knew
That there was heartbreak ahead
And everyone but I could see
That's the story of me
Don't look back, to think about the things we did
Don't look back, to pretend that's how it might have been
I'm walking homeward thru the shadows of the night again
So now the story can be told,

Wonderful stuff! This - as so often - would have been a deserved worldwide smash! The Everlys and Jeff Lynne - what a fantastic combination!
Seems like something is foul: the crap ranks high in the charts, the genius stroke remains almost unnoticed by the larger public.
