End of the day, destroying those boats and all other means of transportation means that the insurgents have a harder time moving men and supplies. For those asking why they did not engage the guys in the boat, they cannot engage unless they confirm that the people on the boat have weapons. So they waited to get a clear look and by that time the enemy had split. So they blew up the boat with the cargo/ammo containers to keep someone from coming by later and picking it up!

I'd say that they prolly expended 150 to 200 rounds of 30mm ammo, i'm guessing that those rounds run 5 to 15 dollars each (you would have to do a freedom of information act question to find out exactly how much they cost) And as for making the decision to fire, yeah, prolly one of the harderst jobs a soldier can have to do, almost like being a sniper. They have to use their sights, their training and their best judgement, I dont envy that task, and a lot of soldiers come back with PTSD
