Cash was unique--a gentleman statesman of songs, with a greater ability than anyone else I can think of to understand seriously good songwriting, no matter where it comes from.
Long live Johnny Cash ! Please stop by and check out the video for my haunting love song "Sweet Adelaide" when you get a chance. Thank You !! ~ Foxman
@burrrandy less smooth and sexy, I agree. but less dark, I certainly don't think so. Cash's voice is so naturally sombre, esp. at this stage in his life. And the accompanying music may sound too countryish to be dark for many people, but it's more stripped down and less beaty so that does help enhance the darkness in a different way. I don't think this tries to be sexy, it recreates a different feeling deliberately, like all Cash covers. But I'm a Big Springsteen fan so this isn't an argument:)
Bruce's original is awesome, his live version's even better, and there's a cover by Heather Nova that gives me goosebumps everytime.... But it's a really Johnny Cash-esque song too, so it's awesome that he realized that and covered it.
@kawasaki4everKX lol you're a hypocrite... look at what you just said... you "piece of shit". i'm intitled to my opinion... you're the one that's not showing respect.
Who can say which one is best ? JC was the man and done a fantastic tribute to a fellow fantastic musician ! Sometimes I wish John was still around...
I personally prefer the Springsteen version, but this version is also fantastic. I don't think it's really fair to compare the two, though, since they have different styles.
Damn I feel for anybody that hasn't heard Waylons version.. As a fan of both legends.. Waylon absolutely murders Johnnys version... I mean its not even close
@TheWitchOvAgnesi Damn straight, well said! That's the beauty of the tribute - every artist that has genuine talent - like Cash - puts his or her signature on it - you either get that or you don't.
@TheWitchOvAgnesi but ur forgeting if both r better then none is better and they both rip open a portal in the universe where johny and bruce come out and engage in the act of MORTAL KOMBAT which inturns makes my anus bleed and i dont want that to happen thank you
@TheWitchOvAgnesi True that Witch....I think Johnny did this out of respect for Bruce....and Bruce did the same. Typical tard muffins just want to compare...its all about how they share!!!
@LibTyrMatrix2011 Sorry you don't like it, I respect the fact that you don't like it, but you come off as an asshole with no taste in music, that's just the impression I'm getting, and I'm sure a few people here will agree with me
Cash did a version of this on one of the American albums with Rick Rubin that sounded much moodier than this one. It was more stripped down and made Cash's weathered voice the focus of the whole thing and it was way better than this version. I wish I could find it on here. Maybe someone will post it. (please)
Bruce in one hand and Johnny in the other. They're both exceptional in their own way, and I never not liked a single one of either man's songs. Why not take both?
Early in his career he was the only one who scheduled the gigs for the band. As such, he got the money when paid and distributed it out to the other band members. They started calling him "The Boss" as a joke.
The nickname "The Boss" really caught on though in Asbury Park, NJ who were overwhelmed with his talent. They heard the nickname and assumed it was because of his level of skill and talent. This was in the70s him from there. At first he didn't like the nickname but he has grown to accept it

I wasn't completely sure...This just sounded really old, like it could be a possibility. Not a great cover, I like the original. And no, I'm not big into Springsteen. Dude calls himself "The Boss"...not for me.
@brand0 Well.. No, he only calls himself ''The Boss'' when he's joking about it. Actually he has said that he doesn't even really like the nickname.. Please get your fact straight next time.. :-)
@itabuttrose I'm sure he got the nickname because of all the nights he played on the shore with the bar bands and the audience would say ''that guys the boss of the stage''?
The thing I like about Springsteen's version is how he sings "fire" and everything he rhymes with it as one syllable...this version is decent, but I like the original.
I'm a massive Cash fan - but this version comes no where near The Boss'. When Springsteen sings it it is so moody and sexual. This sounds almost like a hymn!
