  • I'm gonna try this! My 6870 started grinding a few hours ago!!!

  • Did it and it worked! Your 3 screwdriver method is good! I might post a video as well

  • @TreyArc Why the hell would it not work? :)

  • Wow. I just tried doing exactly what the video poster did and it BROKE THE PLASTIC TRIANGLE COMPLETELY OFF! Thanks for ruining my fan.

  • @UrokLizard No problem.

  • @TheckoHW That is why I posted the warning on my video. So nubs like these don't ruin their gear.

  • @UrokLizard Maybe you did it wrong, worked for me.

  • @UrokLizard rofl

  • Hello, I have a radeon 5870 XFX model (center fan) and I'm trying to lub it, but it's different from other fans like the one in this video, do you happen to know if it's even possible to lub this?

    Thank you!

    Thank You

  • @roflcoptero Try the method i used on the Nvidia fan in the video, there should be a hole or a rubber cap. If there is a rubber cap then just gently push it out.

  • Hi, I'm having some fan noise issue from my ATI Radeon HD4890. Gets louder as I adjust the fan speed and when I try putting my finger over the GPU fan just to see if the noise is coming from it (gently touch) the noise significantly dropped. This happened only recently.

It used to be silent when I'm booting up my PC(of course after the usual loud spin-up), but now there's this weird noise. I also notice that at 40% fan speed, I used to have around 29XXrpm, now i'm getting 25XXrpm. Help please

  • @Hiddenlce 4890 has the same fan, you can try this method to repair it, but since the noise stops when you use pressure on the fan i would say that your bearing has been eaten out. Try lubing it, it does not cost you anything, and you will clean the card from dust in the process.

  • This worked perfectly for me. You have to take it completely apart. Not very hard you just need the right type screwdriver. I used weed-eater grease and it works like new. When putting the fan back on its easier to put the triangle part on and screw it in first. Also don't forget to reapply thermal paste if needed and make sure everything is snug. Thanks Thecko!!

  • hey man i was wondering if you have taken apart a ati 6850 gpu fan? i wanna lube mine up but im not entirely sure if i can use the same method you used as in this video to take it apart

  • @darklsins If it is a blower fan then this method will work. Just open your fan and check under the sticker, if the hole is solid then you can use this method. Note that some fans have a cap on the hole, if its made out of rubber just gently push it out and return it when you have lubricated the fan.

  • @TheckoHW thx alot man, your method worked great =) subbed.

  • I manage to open my ATI card , but cannot open fan with 3 screwdrivers like in video. I nearly crack one of the plastic angles. Where i can buy new Cooling FAN for my ATI video Card ?

  • @ultimateunlocker I think there were fans on ebay, but dont know if there are some now. Every blower fan from the 4xxx to 6xxx series would fit, they didnt change the screw holes, so your best bet is to look for a broken card and salvage the fan

  • Had to take apart the whole graphic card to put a single oil drop inside the fan...

  • Kudos mate. This worked like a charm.

  • BTW: You should post this video on all the ATI/AMD fan noise threads you can find. :D

It took me a while to find this video.

  • Thanks for the video. The 5970 is really awful to take apart just to get the fan out. x_x

But I just did it and it works fine. I also replaced the heatsink grease of the GPUs. They put a little bit too much there in the factory. How long did it work for you since you put the grease in the fan bearing?

  • @HarryL77 Shortly after i done the greasing i bought a scythe musashi, so i wouldnt know how long it takes, but judging with bearings of cars, who take much more of a beating, its 2 years.

  • Thank you so much.

  • thanks works good for me. keep it up

  • Yeah, WD40 is too thin and it'll evaporate probably, it should only be used to free rusted mechansims or clean stuff maybe. I think 3 in 1 oil might not be thick enough either. Nothing beats grease.

Anyway, thanks a lot, now I know how to get into this fan.

  • Hi, what did you use to lubricate the fan ?

    Any particular brand ?

I noticed there are several greases available (PTFE, MoS2, lithium, graphite+lithium)

    Thanks.

  • @steinmil i used some swedish bearing grease for motor saws. Never gave much attention on what im using, but dont use WD40 or similiar products, its good for cleaning, but not good for lubricating. Your best bet is to go into a hardware store, and ask for bearing grease, cause bearing grease is meant for those kinds of alloys.

  • @steinmil I used x-tra heavy duty wheel bearing grease, I got it from home depot for $5. It took about 30 min to take apart gpu, remove fan and take it apart, grease the bearings and reassemble the card. Best $5 I have ever spent, Thank you so much TheckoHW for showing me how to do this.

  • @CRAZYHORSE19682003

    Very glad i helped.

  • Hey man, you save my life!!!

My video card have the a fan problem and with this guide i have fix that!

Plus my life, i save 40€ because i have think to buy a new cooling system...

    THANKS, THANKS A LOT MAN!!!

  • @DogoSanji Glad i could help, i made this video since i couldnt find any info on how to open that fan.
