It's true that they used Islam as a rallying call to other Muslims to help them but that was only small number within the resistance. The Russians used the Jihad excuse in order to gain support for their war there from the West which was very anti-Muslim after 9/11. Up until that point they were against the war.

Stalingrad, both the city and battle, was 1000 times greater in size and scope than this battle, but the Grozny battle had all the same elements such as city fighting and the brutality of the opponents. The Stalingrad battle was fought over an area the size of France and involved millions of men and all this all happened continuously for over five months. Russians lost more than one million men and the Germans 250,000. So yes I'd say closer to 1000 times greater than little Grozny.

It was caused by the secession of a minority state and the heavy-handed response of the central government - the fact that the Chechens were mostly musilm wasn't important until they started looking for recruits abroad.
