Viva Farc. the whole thing is fishy. the woman didn't act very scared, like she had just been rescued by 'terrorists.' You gotta love all this expert analysis from a bunch of paranoid, conspiracy nuts who probably couldn't even find Colombia on a map. Have any of you ever been to Colombia??? Probably not. I spent 3 years there and saw exactly what is going on in that country. These are just typical knee jerk responses from a bunch of people who's hatred is so deep for Bush they will come up with anything to discredit our government even when there is good news.
politics and power play as usual. Why now? After YEARS?! At USA election time, and McCain just happens to be there....America does nothing outside it's borders for charity...
Americans don't be fooled by this Bullshit!!! This is all just to make Colombia look good to Americans so they can ram though the stupid "Free Trade" deal. Americans are waking up and will not lose anymore jobs to 3rd world Countries
like Colombia. The only thing Colombia has to offer the average American is Cocain, Heroin, Illegal Aliens and Very Cheap Outsourced Labor, we already get that from Mexico. I pray to God that we learned our lessen from NAFTA
it seems even in good times like this its a conspiracy get a life wounder if you to lazy to get one maybe you shouldn't blame NFTA but liberals who just love to tax tax tax.
All these conspiracy theory freaks!Y cant people believe that Colombia succesfully freed the hostages through an undercover rescue mission? I enjoy how latin american "EXPERTS" on here belive that something fishy went on. Some idiot will probably come on here and say the FARC was created by the Colombian governement with the help of the US so that investor can exploit the poor. CMON, give me a break. I think people, aswell as some governments & guerillas, use the poor to reject capitalism.
Hooligan, I still agree with you and you ask for proof? There is no conspiracy theory here but a simple distinction, reality and TV are different, this is not hard to appreciate yet too hard to separate because many spend more time in front of the tube than inside their minds. If you ever have time, read the text of the USA PATRIOT Act, and then think about privacy and individual freedom. Some of its language affects terrorists, some affects Americans. An all-or-none approach is poor thinking.
Hooligan, once upon a time an idiot said that Jesus walked on water and lots of people believed it. It's not about the idiots' claims, but about what or who you choose to believe. Some use the poor to reject capitalism and some use capitalism to reject the poor. As long as you believe than one -ism is better than the other, you're still part of the problem and far from the solution. Good luck with Fox News and CNN, their reality is painless, and if it hurts, there's always Vicodin.
mabe yes, maybe no, thats really a mistery, because if it was a fake, perhaps what would be farc next attemp, but thats difficult to think because those hostages were like their best weapon to use agaisnt colombia, and because of their liberation it was also a great damage to las farc, so this still a enigma.
This goes out to all th people who support the left-wing parties, the FARC, Che Guevarra, Castro, Hugo Chavez and the socialist movement...MORONS!!You have been slapped in the face again. When will u understand that socialism is a failed system. No matter how many Guerillas are formed to start a "revolution" u will always fail!! VIVA Colombia and Bravo to the United States. Both those countries have shut Hugo Chavez rants toward the U.S. and Colombia.
of course,as we are all aware,FARC are the biggest amateurs in history. All it takes to penetrate their defences are a few Che t-shirts and a winning smile-think people! What is most unsettling about this story is the way it is swallowed wholesale by millions with not one critical thought.
Spinoza, don't burst my bubble!! I was so happy to see the great work done by the fantastic Colombian Army, first in Ecuador, now with Ingrid, and all of this under the rejection of the free trade agreement between Bush and Uribe. I guess I'll go back to my regular news where I care about Britney's Latte and Lindsay's nipples. Why some many people watch TV and still call that news is puzzling. It's like thinking about masturbation as sex. Please don't wake them up, they may think, and that hurts
hey gurudev7833 for sure we all know and "viva le france" but every body supports their couse with the means presented and dont for get the french fries were for a menut freedom fries.
Pretty bad information what you get USA has invested a huge ammount of technology to support Uribe It is inminent for the imperialist to have place in the middle of South America were they can base more troops and logistics This is not an acomplishment of the Colombian goverment it is just a way of selling out their country to the insterest of the North American invenstors This will only help the rich and never the poor for which another stonger guerrilla will be created sooner or later.Watch
And whom are you talking about? Mr. Salvadorian is the only person that has half a brain pertaining to this story... Read in between the lines people! Research more before making comments on something you know nothing about....
Remember if you get kidnaped outside the US do not COUNT on our goverment for anything. We had a 3rd world country army bringing our folks back. FUCK BUSH AND THIS administration!!!...
yes, its very sad the silence of us goverment and media. its obvious that Colombian Goverment wanted to bring them back, i was very worried about the US citizens because that jungle is a very hostile enviroment for them and their resistence to tropical diseases could be poor.
THE WAY that our news media is flooding the press with "congratulations to the Colombian government" and the manner in which so many foolish people are eating that up (as can be seen by their repetition of that mantra) is enough for anyone who has been studying Latin America to know that something is fishy. FARC was considering freeing hostages at the behest of Chavez. It now seems like Uribe and the Colombian government are trying to take all the credit for what was a friendly release.
Betomas, you read the news pretty selectively. Chavez' efforts had stopped months ago when it was discovered that he was using his negotiator position to plot with FARC and undermine President Uribe internationally.
Bajalocom, stop kidding yourself. You wouldn't support US troops being dispatched to retrieve every US citizen that gets kidnapped. Plenty of other reasons to criticize this administration- don't water them down by making BS statements like this...
jpnuttal, reading the news selectively is a reflection of critical thinking. Believing that something did not happen because you did not watch it on TV (e.g., Chavez' efforts stopped) is a sign of our times. I hate to disappoint you but Mickey Mouse is not a true rodent, and US troops do a lot of things most are unaware of. That Ms. Betancourt is a free woman is a very good thing. Believing the illusion the media is selling around the story is not that great. Happy Disney vacation!!
It makes no sense what betomas says. According to Reyes's laptop, chávez would have given 300 million USD to the farc so they freed to hostages to him. To president correa of Ecuador, they would've promised the son's of Montoya to be given. They do so to give cretdit to the leftist goverments of chavez and correa, and to illegitimate the colombian goverment.
Farc would never do anything that would give popularity to Uribe, so what you say makes no sense.
FARC is evil incarnate. They have lost track of any ideals they may have at one time been pursuing, and are now simply guard dogs for drug cartels. 15 hostages freed? how about the other 700? These hostages aren't soldiers, they're simply civilians who's families the FARC believe they can extort money from.
Goodness! the people who responded to my comment, like dianapad, jpnut, and camilocuesta are TOOLS with a capital "T." I study the media as a whole as part of my job and I can tell you for a fact that the media, especially the news media, LIES to everyone to fulfill economic and political agendas. to the three people i mentioned above: I feel sorry for you guys in that you do not question authority. Camilo, do you really buy that easily made up story about Chavez giving FARC 300M. u tool!
Cmon, the media occasionally uses political and economic to fullfill an agenda, but the fact that u want to reject the fact that Chavez has helped the FARC is stupid! Interpol has imperical evidence that Chavez hass helped the rebles. Fox news or MSNBC, for example, did not accuse Chavez blindly, rather they used interpols report on the matter. So what B.S. are u gona come up with now. I think ur the TOOL with a capital "T".
Hooligan, I also agree with you in that socialism is a failed system, just as monarchy, anarchy, communism, and any other -ism of your choice. But, what is a successful system? Democracy? Chavez and Correa were both elected and, if their election was rigged as many argue (and I simply don't know) then that should also tell you something about democracy, shouldn't it? They do not represent failed systems. They are a failure as leaders and belong in jail. We'll talk about systems another time.
Excellent commentary, Fuster. While democracy has it's flaws, perhaps you've witnessed first hand the tragic toll "isms" have taken AGAINST people who are just as entitled to the unmatched liberties we enjoy here in the U.S. I certainly have...
Elainebird, as a matter of fact, sadly, I have witnessed more than I wanted. What I believe is that we are slowly loosing those unmatched liberties in the US in the hands of intolerance and lack of insight. People easily persuaded by media lost their ability to see through others' opinions and rarely have their own. Screaming Muerte a Chavez is similar to saying Viva Chavez in this context, there is no analysis done, pure empty rhetoric. It takes a little more than CNN (or FOx) to be informed.
Stupid nick name like stupid ideas. So is succesful system Capitalism? We can see What happened in Africa, in Latin America, in Asia, even in USA where 30 milion people lives with cupons. The first attempt for another system, socialism was failed, but there will be a second round. Capitalism passes 400 years to be strong enouph, who will wait that socialism could succed in 70 years with the way that takes?
How funny your English. What exactly is to "know" Colombia? To live there? To read about it? To visit and then to read news about it? Discussing international politics and news coverage has little to do with Colombia. And if you happen to think that this is "just a Colombian affair", I certainly respect your opinion, and will concede that you do "know" about Colombia. Just leave understanding to others.
I get it...u r a TOOL with a capital "T" of the Chavista movement....Now i get why u say the media lied to the public about the situation. Your just angry because Chavez got the rug pulled out of his feet.
Hooligan, of course socialism is dead and most definitively Chavez and Correa are using it to keep their pockets full and their people poor. I hope one day the FARC are pulverized and Colombians go back to a free and non-violent society. But mass media is a different issue. Believing Fox news or MSNBC when they cite an Interpol report (Interpol has little to do with international politics, it's the CIA) is what keep people numb and the problem (these pseudo-populist dictators) alive.
Ariestheramone; ...so, do you think we all here in Colombia care, are preocupied or are interested in the whereabouts of some political candidate from another country, like john McCain? Wow, are you really arrangant, aren´t you? Who told you that we are doing things in Colombia to pleaase every American secret desire or political agenda?
You sound like all the lunatics in your country that finds Roswell conspiracies and UFO theories behind every military movement.
Nearly no one, and certainly not the news reports the first few minutes of her speech (for those who saw it live know) That the FIRST thing she said was her thanks to GOD and the Virgin Mary in her prayers.. and at the end of her speech her and the others around all knelt and PRAYED in thanks...
yeah for sure we all know it was a great rescue on behalf of the colombian military but for this its a reminder to any revolutianries out there that it is too a sichologycal warfare and the revolution must go on.
The FARC call themselves "socialists", do you support them ? I am French and to me they are terrorists. I know it is the "official/politically correct" word accepted in the West but "socialism" is for me about "freedom and help" not about "imprisonment".
Not everybody in Colombia has a "socialist aspiration", would you advise "imprisoning them all", I think "socialism o muerte" sounds "totalitarian" although you think it's for the good of everybody. To me social democracy is more open.

This was suspiciously timed for McCain's unusual visit to Colombia...reminds me of when Iran, after being sold arms by Reagan, suddenly released the 400 some-odd hostages that were held for over a year, only after Reagan was elected.
Another political scandal, if you ask me.
Seems they could have been released at any time, but conveniently for the war-mongerer.
I live in South Florida and it saddens me that the only network currently reporting any news on this is CNN. These 3 Americans are the longest held American hostages in history. We should show them a little more consideration the Colombian networks have been running live footage all day long. I am also Colombian and right now I have to say that I feel a great sense of pride in the Colombian military & in President Urribe. He has truly been a blessing for Colombia.
Actually it is Uribe, not Urribe, LOL. but w/e, who cares.
I feel really proud of my country for the operation to rescue the 3 Americans, Betancourt and the Colombian hostages who have been suffering for a very long time.
This show the dedication of our country to serve the world and make it a better place. Proud of my country for the great service that has done to the world today. Thanks to Uribe and the brave honorable soldiers for their service.

You gotta love all this expert analysis from a bunch of paranoid, conspiracy nuts who probably couldn't even find Colombia on a map. Have any of you ever been to Colombia??? Probably not. I spent 3 years there and saw exactly what is going on in that country. These are just typical knee jerk responses from a bunch of people who's hatred is so deep for Bush they will come up with anything to discredit our government even when there is good news.

I think people, aswell as some governments & guerillas, use the poor to reject capitalism.
hooliganism49 3 years ago
Hooligan, I still agree with you and you ask for proof? There is no conspiracy theory here but a simple distinction, reality and TV are different, this is not hard to appreciate yet too hard to separate because many spend more time in front of the tube than inside their minds. If you ever have time, read the text of the USA PATRIOT Act, and then think about privacy and individual freedom. Some of its language affects terrorists, some affects Americans. An all-or-none approach is poor thinking.
fuster227 3 years ago

Both those countries have shut Hugo Chavez rants toward the U.S. and Colombia.
hooliganism49 3 years ago 2
of course,as we are all aware,FARC are the biggest amateurs in history. All it takes to penetrate their defences are a few Che t-shirts and a winning smile-think people! What is most unsettling about this story is the way it is swallowed wholesale by millions with not one critical thought.

Spinoza, don't burst my bubble!! What exactly would you say if Bush HAD gone into Columbia and extracted the hostages by force? You'd be crying bloody murder.
Can't eat your cake and have it too.
galaktar 3 years ago
THE WAY that our news media is flooding the press with "congratulations to the Colombian government" and the manner in which so many foolish people are eating that up (as can be seen by their repetition of that mantra) is enough for anyone who has been studying Latin America to know that something is fishy. FARC was considering freeing hostages at the behest of Chavez. It now seems like Uribe and the Colombian government are trying to take all the credit for what was a friendly release.
betomas 3 years ago
WHAT???? are u drunk??? read and watch news ok?
dianapad 3 years ago
Thank you Colombia!
Plenty of other reasons to criticize this administration- don't water them down by making BS statements like this...
jpnuttal 3 years ago
jpnuttal, reading the news selectively is a reflection of critical thinking. Happy Disney vacation!!
fuster227 3 years ago 2
It makes no sense what betomas says. According to Reyes's laptop, chávez would have given 300 million USD to the farc so they freed to hostages to him. To president correa of Ecuador, they would've promised the son's of Montoya to be given. They do so to give cretdit to the leftist goverments of chavez and correa, and to illegitimate the colombian goverment.
Farc would never do anything that would give popularity to Uribe, so what you say makes no sense.
camilocuesta 3 years ago
FARC is evil incarnate. They have lost track of any ideals they may have at one time been pursuing, and are now simply guard dogs for drug cartels. 15 hostages freed? how about the other 700? These hostages aren't soldiers, they're simply civilians who's families the FARC believe they can extort money from.
galaktar 3 years ago
Goodness! the people who responded to my comment, like dianapad, jpnut, and camilocuesta are TOOLS with a capital "T." I study the media as a whole as part of my job and I can tell you for a fact that the media, especially the news media, LIES to everyone to fulfill economic and political agendas. to the three people i mentioned above: I feel sorry for you guys in that you do not question authority. Camilo, do you really buy that easily made up story about Chavez giving FARC 300M. u tool!
betomas 3 years ago 2
Cmon, the media occasionally uses political and economic to fullfill an agenda, but the fact that u want to reject the fact that Chavez has helped the FARC is stupid! Interpol has imperical evidence that Chavez hass helped the rebles. Fox news or MSNBC, for example, did not accuse Chavez blindly, rather they used interpols report on the matter. So what B.S. are u gona come up with now. I think ur the TOOL with a capital "T".
hooliganism49 3 years ago
Hooligan, I also agree with you in that socialism is a failed system, just as monarchy, anarchy, communism, and any other -ism of your choice. But, what is a successful system? Democracy? Chavez and Correa were both elected and, if their election was rigged as many argue (and I simply don't know) then that should also tell you something about democracy, shouldn't it? They do not represent failed systems. They are a failure as leaders and belong in jail. We'll talk about systems another time.
fuster227 3 years ago
Excellent commentary, Fuster. While democracy has it's flaws, perhaps you've witnessed first hand the tragic toll "isms" have taken AGAINST people who are just as entitled to the unmatched liberties we enjoy here in the U.S. I certainly have...
Elainebird 3 years ago
Elainebird, as a matter of fact, sadly, I have witnessed more than I wanted. What I believe is that we are slowly loosing those unmatched liberties in the US in the hands of intolerance and lack of insight. People easily persuaded by media lost their ability to see through others' opinions and rarely have their own. Screaming Muerte a Chavez is similar to saying Viva Chavez in this context, there is no analysis done, pure empty rhetoric. It takes a little more than CNN (or FOx) to be informed.
fuster227 3 years ago
Stupid nick name like stupid ideas. So is succesful system Capitalism? We can see What happened in Africa, in Latin America, in Asia, even in USA where 30 milion people lives with cupons. The first attempt for another system, socialism was failed, but there will be a second round. Capitalism passes 400 years to be strong enouph, who will wait that socialism could succed in 70 years with the way that takes?
alexchania 3 years ago
Dear Sir

laramuc 3 years ago
Dear laramuc
How funny your English. What exactly is to "know" Colombia? To live there? To read about it? To visit and then to read news about it? Discussing international politics and news coverage has little to do with Colombia. And if you happen to think that this is "just a Colombian affair", I certainly respect your opinion, and will concede that you do "know" about Colombia. Just leave understanding to others.
fuster227 3 years ago
I get it...u r a TOOL with a capital "T" of the Chavista movement....Now i get why u say the media lied to the public about the situation. Your just angry because Chavez got the rug pulled out of his feet.
hooliganism49 3 years ago
Hooligan, of course socialism is dead and most definitively Chavez and Correa are using it to keep their pockets full and their people poor. I hope one day the FARC are pulverized and Colombians go back to a free and non-violent society. But mass media is a different issue. Believing Fox news or MSNBC when they cite an Interpol report (Interpol has little to do with international politics, it's the CIA) is what keep people numb and the problem (these pseudo-populist dictators) alive.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This was suspiciously timed for McCain's unusual visit to Colombia...reminds me of when Iran, after being sold arms by Reagan, suddenly released the 400 some-odd hostages that were held for over a year, only after Reagan was elected.
