Petrucci has a nice tone , and clean technique , there just isn't any emotion or real phrasing in his playing . it just sounds like tired minor scales played strictly by the book ....my point is , ANYONE CAN PLAY LIKE HIM if they just sit down and run through scales all day , you need not have any imagination or talent! If this guy has ever played anything inspiring or unusual please post the link here and change my opinion!
@MichaelsPortraits What is "emotion" in music? Choosing to bend slowly over certain beats? That's generally very easy to do. He's more than capable of that, he plays technically because that's what he wants to do. Try the Razors Edge solo at the end of Octavarium. It's gorgeous.
@gnryeah Ok gn , I listened to the Razors Edge and it was really good , you could hear a lot of David Gilmour and plenty of what made Yngwie famous , I guess if you really love the harmonic minor scales inspired by JS Bach then this guy will move you ....as far as bending notes , developing a memorable vibrato is not easy but what really matters is note choice no matter how fast or slow you play!
@MichaelsPortraits Ive see you in different videos of Jhon's solos, and i want to tell you something: It's dissapointing, you have shared the same idea 2 (or more) times, just like if you where hating, and the comments looked like sooo much. Jhon's music indeed has feeling, i can perfectly hear the motion of the "Constant motion"... I think you are slow enough to don't hear it. Go hear Hendrix's slow songs and stop trolling here, please...
@MichaelsPortraits I think you should sit and listen to his solo album, suspended animation, buy the tab´s book, and she what MUSIC and EMOTION really is ;)! good luck!
@DEMON666DRUMMER He's depressing the whammy bar first to get a full dive bomb, then he's slowly releasing the whammy back to pitch while playing pinch harmonics, and then pulling the bar up to make it squeal. In a similar vein to Dimebag (of Pantera) and his pigsqueal. But that's where you just play natural harmonics as you bend them up after dropping the pitch and grabbing them low.
@DEMON666DRUMMER that is called "natural harmonics". It's similar to pinch harmonics. What you don't see is that he is touching the string with the knuckle of his left hand to create the harmonic while simultaneously picking and bending the note with the tremelo.
@FRsleepwalker I mean in the sense that the low frequency vibrations are muted in the string and only the high-end vibrations remain. I am saying the effect is the same, not the cause. A similar sound could be achieved with either technique.
@TheHornet79 He's plays the note and pulls on the termolo bar. He does the same at the end of the Under a Glass Moon solo. We get to see it very well in this demo version : /watch?v=bVmq2C5kLoM
@tabotabojayar he did, if it was the bridge pickup it wouldn't have that "swooshing" sound when he plays really fast. he just switches extremely fast you don't notice it.
@x3metallicrose41x i dunno if youve ever tried to play this solo, but yeah it probably does hurt cause i know when ive attempted it it kills my arms lol
his tone here is a bit off i think..idk,not so sure.....i have this dvd too and keep watching it over and over just to figure out if he really f' up in the fast part or is it really just the tone......
@MaxMouse83 yeah...i know...in his latest videos his tone is really different from his original sound before....he uses lots of delay(which i think is good for live performances to avoid the picking sound to overlap the real sound of the notes, so he says too)but sometimes his tone is too thin and i'm missing that crunch" he used to have in his tone....like in this vid....
@graphficker personally, (and dont get me wrong i love dream theater as much as any other hardcore dream theater fan, cause i am one) i didnt believe that the whole choas in motion compilation was a very good performance for these guys. i mean i realize theyre playing some wicked technical stuff, but in comparison to live at budakon? its not that great for them

@swilson3d It's an artificial harmonic ...
FRsleepwalker 1 month ago
@FRsleepwalker You may very well be right. They are really the exact same thing in effect.
swilson3d 1 month ago
@swilson3d Nope. He is not touching anything with his left hand, it's exacty what Satch does all the time : Pinch harmonics on open G string.
It's not the same sound as a natural harmonic
