She loved to love and had so much love to give. Her life is a reflection of the human condition. I doubt she ever really found true love except for the brotherly love she had for her brother
mcrosswade: Fred was a dear friend from high school days onward. We met Meg after they married and I remember the incident to which you refer. Tragic beyond all expression. We miss him terribly and each time I hear any of his works I am reminded of his great talent and his marvelous collaborations with Meg. Peace and love to the family.
The Carpenters. A permanent part of musical history and part of my life. Their music is full of memories for me and I think for many people in the world. Lovely artists.
freak fact, my step-grandfather wrote that song for a film called, Lovers and Other Strangers. My stepmom, his daughter, was a little more than nuts and committed a felony. Can't say more than that here. Wait for the book. :) But it is all a matter of fact. Those are more fun than fiction anyway, right?
If we could only understand the underlying message in her songs her soul was tortured and she felt miserable wish she could have seen the beauty in the mirror instead of having a horrible sickness that no one should have to go thru her voice always puts my heart at ease.
it saddens me to this day that how can this very talented woman leave us at such a very young age what a very gifted beautiful voice she had!!thank you for sharring her song!!
I hope Randy Schmidt (Author of Little Girl Blue) had the chance to watch Piers Morgan's interview with Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine Jackson, where Jermaine talks about how people write "UNAUTHORIZED" books about celebrities. Sound familiar Carpenter fans??? For as many people who have bought & read his mere pamplet of a book. Family, Friends, people who lived & toured it know most.
This is such a beautiful song, and Karen brings such a depth of feeling to it in her voice. But it is more than that, it also Richard's arranging, and I love the piano in this song, the piano alone makes me cry.
Feeling is what sums up this song, such aching tenderness, such gentle restraint, and sensitivity, and a knowingness (for want of a better word). Great to see that even young people of today are bowled over by songs such as this by the Carpenters.
We live in a world where the media just adds fuel to an already burning fire.Randy Schmidt is no different!!! How much substance can there be to an Author who purposely only puts part of Richard Carpenters head on a cover of a book that he has written, and then he states, when you get done reading the book, people will understand. Little Girl Blue is a mere Pamphlet compared to all the Facts that he couldn't get, some things "MUST" stay private Randy, because we know you would print it! GB KC
Saw The Carpenters in concert in Houston when I was a youngster ("Kind of Hush" tour). Didn't have great seats but it was an incredible show. Karen had several costume changes and even came out into the audience to have people sing into a mic when they did "Sing" then would play it back for them to hear. Great, great show and they really did sound as polished as their records. Glad to have had that opportunity. I cried like a baby when she passed.
I will go on the record by saying Karen Carpenter's problem was ultimately SELF ESTEEM, that lead to her eating disorder. Over the last 10 months countless people have told me that I was right about Randy Schmidt just wanting to sell books, however pay no kudos to me. The fans usually find out the truth. I can add 25 chapters to Randy's INCOMPLETE book. The people who wouldn't talk to him will talk to me, because I would NEVER throw people of whom I Love under the bus, especially Karen.

@KatellaGate - lol. that's because they only want to see women prancing around and pole dancing! Karen was all about the music... such an amazing voice!
I wish I could have grown up with Karen, and been her best friend. I would have hugged her, told her that she was beautiful, and that I loved her, every single day.
I still believe that music can bring countries together, especially this music, seems like it's still 1974 in Japan, you would never be able to tell that The Carpenters don't perform their anymore, their music is all over-gee if we only played the Carpenters over here in the USA like we use to.
Great comment, Ashley. The Best Female Voice of Our time. A voice that soothed and comforted a nation and it's soldiers in time of war. The voice of an Angel. There will never be another like our Karen.

The Carpenters still have millions of fans out there, judging by the millions of posts--not bad for a band that disbanded almost 30 years ago. I LOVE this song--the sentiment of it, the warmth, is perfect for Karen's voice--and she's perfect for the song--synchronicity. Such warmth, heart married with perfect pitch, tone. One of the greatest singers of the 20th century. The voice of an angel.

Feb. 4. Sonnet 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: (…) But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest, Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Well said, Willie

@MarceloBatista1 I agree--but would remove 'in this style' because once you get to this caliber--you go to the top with Pavarotti, Sinatra, Bennett, Bjorling, Sills, etc. Her vocal tone, warmth, pitch, and interpretation is unmatched. She's easily the best alto voice ever.
The Carpenters la voce più bella del mondo!! Le canzoni meravigliose intrepretate da Lei sembrano la voce di un angelo. Sei stata unica!!! Un bacione da un eterno ammiratore tuo.
@mpower6428 Too late, she died many years ago from anorexia just because of people like you, always telling people they are too fat, too thin to ugly, too beautufull etc, she could not take it !!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@gruffmeister44 Perfectly said! Karen was one special women, most Angelic & Beautiful person I have ever seen (very powerful) almost to good for the world.
It's also a combination of seeing such a beautiful girl singing such a beautiful song so perfectly.Like lots of singers sound kind of like other singers, but no one even ever sounded anything like her.Thank God we were alive for this real magic.
Such a clear, pure, utterly lovely voice. Gives me chills to hear this sweet old song again. What a tragedy she left us so early! Sad, sad. May she be at peace. Karen Carpenter, you beautiful, gentle lady. We miss you, we still love you.
She really did have a unique quality to her voice that I still appreciate after all these years, and we are talking almost 40 years. As soon as she sings one little note you know you are in for a treat with all that richness of hers. Many have imitated, few have matched.
I'm a 27 years-old guy from Brazil and I do remember when my parents used to listen to the Carpenters records when I was just little boy and now, I'm the one who get the records to listen to...haha.
There are no more Karen Carpenter singers today. There was only one. There will NEVER be another one. Karen displayed beauty and delicate qualities in her voice. Today it is all techno-crap with vocal enhancements like auto-tuning. Where is our salvation from 21st century bullshit singing. I know there will never be another Karen Carpenter, but perhaps a female will come along with a voice of her own the way Karen had such a voice that was strictly her own. Long Live Karen Carpenters Music.
All the great music from like 65-84 (the Golden Age of Music). Im 39 mostly into music like Zeppelin, Floyd, The Police, Beatles(66-70) The Who etc. But I also have a soft spot for The Carpenters. It makes me remember when I first heard them in Kindergaten the year was 1976 in my teacher had one of those circle form 8 track players in she would play the carpenters moslty. All us little kids would sing along with her. Dam the memories that Karen voice brings back.
Just listen to Karen Carpenter singing live!!! It's just breathtaking!!! Pitch perfect, beautiful pace and crystal clear diction ... how many of today's crappy singer actually can sing like that????
@maxletos - cuckoo cuckoo cuckoo, this is not a cover unless you're saying The Carpenters covered it from someone else.... if that's true I pull back my cuckoos.
There are a few actual live versions of this song here on You Tube, like Live on the BBC, and another couple of videos I think. And she sings them just as great if not better than the studio versions.
@frankty67 If you watch the beginning few seconds you can see she is lip-syncing in this video (She moves her mouth away from the mic. Please, I know she is a great vocalist and was the one singing this!) but that might explain the quality of some the "live" versions.
Saw and met Karen at the Riviera hotel in Las Vegas in 1975... my aunt took me, great concert! After the show Karen signed my album and both my aunt and me a hug... a memory I will cherish too the day I die!
Saw them at kleinhans Music hall in buffalo about 73. I cant imagin what she might have brought us. what a talent. a major loss. a great writer.people should have been looking out for her. a great drum tallent. wow
I am a 52 year old truck driver..and I have a tear in my eye over this song and karen and richards talent...a tear of joy. and a fond memory of better days
I clearly remember the Merv Grifith and Mile Douglas show. Whenever Karen Carpenter apeared and started singing, my world stopped. Everything ceased, time stood still and the earth stopped spinning. I was only about nine or ten years old, but I still feel my skin crawl and my eyes get watery when I hear her voice. God bless you Karen Carpenter and I really hope you are in a better place.
@alcatras4 Just loved your words alcatras, I've been listening to this sensational woman for decades now and Karen never ceases to make my heart melt and ache inside. The music world is empty without her in it.
Most probably the greatest voice to appear in the pop genre. Without any doubt the standard by which all others to follow her will be judged - Ella Fitzgerald

Thinking well... I'm going to remove "in this style".
Thanks for your very good observation.

Such a clear, pure, utterly lovely voice. Gives me chills to hear this sweet old song again. What a tragedy she left us so early! Sad, sad. May she be at peace. Karen Carpenter, you beautiful, gentle lady. We miss you, we still love you.
GildaLee27 1 year ago
She really did have a unique quality to her voice that I still appreciate after all these years, and we are talking almost 40 years. As soon as she sings one little note you know you are in for a treat with all that richness of hers. Many have imitated, few have matched.

I'm a 27 years-old guy from Brazil and I do remember when my parents used to listen to the Carpenters records when I was just little boy and now, I'm the one who get the records to listen to...haha.
I love all their songs. Inspires me for sure!

I remember hearing them on 8 track back in the seventies and always enjoyed their songs. The world misses you Karen.

Just listen to Karen Carpenter singing live!!! It's just breathtaking!!! Pitch perfect, beautiful pace and crystal clear diction ... how many of today's crappy singer actually can sing like that????
andrwng 1 year ago 4
@andrwng - She sang with heart! Today's music is heartless, viscious, and mean, and so are the listeners.
CAS1xtz 1 year ago 3
@andrwng Although I admire Karen Carpenter's voice a lot, this version is a cover. Wish it was live, but it isn't sadly...
Anyway, amazing atmosphere, very nostalgic, deep and soulful... one of the best songs ever...
maxletos 1 year ago
@maxletos - cuckoo cuckoo cuckoo, this is not a cover unless you're saying The Carpenters covered it from someone else.... if that's true I pull back my cuckoos.

There are a few actual live versions of this song here on You Tube, like Live on the BBC, and another couple of videos I think. And she sings them just as great if not better than the studio versions.
frankty67 1 year ago
@frankty67 If you watch the beginning few seconds you can see she is lip-syncing in this video (She moves her mouth away from the mic. Please, I know she is a great vocalist and was the one singing this!) but that might explain the quality of some the "live" versions.

It's just incredible to hear Karen sing, she was gifted with an angels voice, unforgettable. We will never forget you Karen.
