Just FYI this does work for wild mice if baited correctly. Peanut butter works great, and do make sure the container is tall enough so they can't jump out. Depending on the size mice your dealing with.
what good is a live trap? most ppl live in cities and suburbs and dont live to close to an area with out homes ie no homes for like 20miles in every direction, plus even if they did they are to lazy to take them out there they take them to a park or down the road just to have them come back or become someone elses problem, and if its a rat it not native to us and should be distroyed, besides it just a pest anyway
seems like a lot of trouble to go to and obviously does not work well. The purpose of a mouse trap is to kill the mouse. Looks alive to me. So how do you kill it? Fill the bottle with water and drown it? or do you put the cap on and sufficate it? Of course I supose that would make clean up easier so you don't have to get your hands dirty. Just cap it and toss it in the trash.
@shatros Try again, this time with a dictionary. The purpose of a mouse trap is to TRAP a mouse. Plenty of mouse traps kill the mouse, but it is by no means a prerequisite of a trap of any kind that it kill the thing being trapped.
@verminjerky Really? I never met anyone who goes to the store to buy a mouse trap so they can let the mouse go again. Doesn't that defeat the purpose? If you like mice and want them in your house that is your business but if you're my neighbor and you are releasing mice within a mile of my home you and I would have some serious problems. Mice are filthy disease ridden vermen that exist soley to destroy and spread disease. Mousetraps are to kill them period!
@shatros Oops. Your ignorance is showing. Better cover it up. Go into your local discount department store (Wal-Mart, Target, whatever) and look at the mouse traps. You should see at least one or two that DO NOT kill the mouse. Yes, you can buy them from major trap manufacturers. They can then be released in a wooded area or field away from people's homes. Sorry you don't like mice. But mouse traps, by definition, TRAP, and can do it by killing or CATCHING.
@verminjerky I have only bought mousetraps at the hardware store near me. They carry two kinds. Both made by victor. One is a spring trap which is the oldest and best known design. It is designed to kill. The other is the glue trap. The glue trap works just slightly better but does not finish the job unless you like to starve yours to death. I usually finishe off the mouse by placing it's neck in a cocked spring trap then tripping it thus breaking it's neck.
@verminjerky I have no reason to go beyond that. between both varieties they kill quite effectively. I avoid Walmart and such stores for a variety of reasons I won't go into here. I am fully aware that there are many misguided people who have devised all manner of silly gadgets to catch mice without harming them. Oh and by the way, in my dictionary under "mousetrap" they display a very nice engraving of a spring trap.
@shatros First, here's Merriam-Webster's definition: 1:a trap for mice 2:a stratagem that lures one to defeat OR destruction. Just because they show one variety of trap doesn't mean that's the ONLY kind of trap. Second, "misguided" is rich considering that some of the most effective traps on the market are no-kill according to market research. (Maybe you should try it.) Many no-kill traps work well. You can put as many "period!"s at the end your sentences as you want. It doesn't make you right.
@verminjerky Well my Webster's dictionary has only one definition for "mousetrap." "a spring activated device used to kill mice" I am not inclined to add new definitions for perfectly suitable old words. You've obviously got a revisionist dictionary. That said, I do not understand your obsession with keeping alive one of the most dangerous and desctructive species known to man. Seriously, do you have a mouse shortage? because we surely do not.
@shatros FYI: Victor is the largest pest trap manufacturer in the U.S. They have at least three models of no-kill mouse traps and also make several different non-lethal mouse repellent devices. Moreover, Victor's parent company, Woodstream Corp., also owns the Havahart company, which deals primarily in injury-free animal traps and repellents, including one of the most popular and effective no-kill commercial traps. That's right. A whole company is based on this concept. Gasp!
@verminjerky Yes I am sure there are many companies based on silly ideas. For example, those that make tobacco products. By the way, the laws of the state I live in agree with what I have said here. I checked and it is illegal to live trap wild animals then release them without a permit. Permits are NOT issued for releasing mice or rats into the wild. In other words, the concept as you have described is illegal here. I am guessing this is not the only state which has such laws.
@shatros Just because you can't use them where you're from doesn't mean others can't use them, which means that the purpose is NOT defeated for most people. Mouse traps do NOT have to kill, and your assertion that they do or else it isn't actually a trap is utterly without merit. The device that is a "trap" works as long as it captures. Your statement was based on ignorance and, frankly, it's blatantly obvious that you only even questioned your uninformed assumption because I told you to do so.
@verminjerky Quite frankly I just never imagined anyone on this planet would be so stupid as to actually want one alive. so it is unimaginable to me that such traps exist. I have never sought one out as I would not want one. This whole discussion is ludicrous. I think the reason I have never heard of live traps for rodents is because they are likely illegal to sell here as I said live trapping rodents here is illegal.
@shatros It's not stupid for many people. Yes, in a place where rodents are a serious problem, one may have to be practical even in the face of sentiment to the contrary, but in a place where mice are native and an important part of the food chain, as in my area, there's no reason to kill them. They'll probably just end up as bird food around here, anyway, and at least one of the birds that eats mice in my area is endangered. So while killing them is an option, it's by no means a necessity.
@verminjerky You know, I admit I have not traveled far nor wide. So I have not seen everything. but I still find it difficult to believe there is such a place where mice are not so plentiful that deliberately going through the trouble of keeping them alive is considered worthwhile.
@verminjerky In fact, not only is it illegal to release rodents anywhere in my state but they also have a bounty on rodents in three cities. They must be turned in dead to get the bounty. The rodent population here can be described as virulent. Now perhaps where you live you have a shortage of the critters, here we do not. they are a scurge and extinction is the desired goal.
@shatros Totally irrelevant to your argument that a trap is not a trap unless it kills, which is completely contrary to the actual definition of the word "trap." The Merriam-Webster definition of "trap" doesn't have the word "kill" (or anything like it) anywhere in it. "Stopped", "caught" and "closed" are there, but not "kill" in any form. The point is you criticized this device's maker wrongly, unfairly, and in ignorance. If it doesn't work, it's not because it doesn't kill.
@shatros PS: If a person with the username verminjerky can accept the validity of a no-kill trap, anyone should be able to. Seriously. My username was inspired by the concept of dead rodents (and I've used it for years.) Don't you find it at least slightly ironic that you're on the side of this argument that you're on?
Hi, I've tried this trap and it seemed to work well, as after a few hours I heard the bottle topple with a mouse squeaking. However, the mouse jumped out before I could seal the lid. I think I'll use a deeper bottle next time. I just hope it'll fall for the same trap twice.

Being handicapped isn't contagious you moron. your killing it for the sake of yourself and your family.
If your dog/cat had aids or rabies and a tendancy to bite people. You have a family, do you think that it's safe having that dog in your home? Where it could potentially harm, and infect your family, and cause you all pain, grief and suffering?

People did not object to your opinion because "no one is allowed to have their own opinion." I'm sorry, but if you think that that's true in any way, especially today as opposed to earlier times, then that is paranoid. You have to realize there was actually something severely wrong and compulsive about your opinion. You own mice, and therefore you showed an attachment to all mice. Your mice are not home invaders that carry disease. Logic is real, and yet it is not common expertise.
RE:mice are harmless and shouldnt be killed , sure they may carry diseases but thats no reason to kill them theres other ways to get rid of em as shown here. anyone agree ?
it has to be along a wall, but ive never thought of that one before. Ive used a bowl with a vhs tape and string but you have to wait. This is pretty cool
get a UV light also known as a black light, this picks up their urine YES urine traces and you can put your traps where they visit the most ... hope this helps.
This would really work for wild mice, because when ever they hear any thing they get spooked and jump, so once the bottle starts to fall they relize somethings going on and hey get the fuck out of there, and trust me there that fast.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
u catch the mouse in the bottle, then kill it in your own way. FUCK THE RODENTS. i had one eating something next to my bed one night i reached under my pillow, grabbed my knife and stabbed the little cunt right through the torso. he didnt know what had fucking hit him.
Don't get me wrong, its a great idea. But you're going to have to add about 2 foot onto your bottle length to be sure to keep him in. A fall like that would probably hurt the mouse, defeating the purpose.
Once caught, if he couldn't jump straight out, he would jump against the top wall, knocking the bottle over and then would get on top of the bottle for extra height and jump out of the trash can. They are so quick and smart it is unbelievable.
they are smart, but they can't invent tools, which is the part of the brain required for that. all they are equipped with is the ability to jump and learn from association. i watched my captor for a while, and he proved it.
The difference between store-bought and wild is like retarded humans vs. Einstein Superman. Seriously. I would imagine you would be lucky to even get a wild mouse to go in that bottle because they are so timid.
But if you go to this big house in the country you were talking about: why not trying to use our trap once and report to us, whether it worked or not?! Would be great for us - regardless the outcome of the experiment, because then we will have facts.
@goodwinco I moved into a big old house miles from anywhere...with a mouse seen running in the kitchen !!! So I made this, but replaced the box with a tall pasta pan to keep the bottle upright better...first night nothing...went out next afternoon and came back to a little chap chomping happily on the piece of cake I left in it !!! No kill...no trauma for the kids...just an unharmed little mouse to release a LONG way from home in the countryside :) Thanks gliesche :)
Pet store bought mice and wild mice are two completely different species (not literally). Notice how that mouse just kinda of looks around, real slow like. An actual live mouse would be in that bottle for, oh, about 1.2 seconds. They can really jump.
As we have pointed out on our website, we are looking for statistics about our traps. It can be that wild mice can jump out of the bottle - we don't know. Only after several tests, we will have a proof whether the traps work or not. Have you tried it? Maybe you have experience in how high wild mice can jump?
I used to live in this big house out in the country that was surrounded by farm ground. In the winter a lot of the mice would come to the house for warmth and shelter. They would be everywhere. I have two snakes that get fed mice every other week. I bought humane traps at Walmart or somewhere to catch them to feed to my snakes.
They really had a hard time catching these mice. They had to "step up their game." Store bought mice, like the one in your video, just walk around until their eaten.
@gliesche A mouse can DEFINITELY jump that high. You should see what a rat can do. (Domestic rat owner here. Give one a bath some time and see that sumbitch jump a yard straight up.) BUT, I think the question isn't how high can a mouse jump. It's whether or not the mouse can jump through that little hole at the top of the bottle and climb out.
@gliesche You know what might help here? Something sticking down into the hole, inward, (like maybe some wire or something?) so that the mouse can crawl in easily, but jumping out would be nearly impossible.
Thanks! It was our intention not to harm the mouse. There is a story of these traps, see http://mousetrap.droehnland.net
Indeed it is one of two pet mice we acquired for the occasion. We are still looking for people that test our trap with house mice and inform us about problems or prosperitites: humanemousetrap@ichfasses.net
im gonna try this but im gonna put it on the edge of a table tied to the ceiling

This would really work for wild mice, because when ever they hear any thing they get spooked and jump, so once the bottle starts to fall they relize somethings going on and hey get the fuck out of there, and trust me there that fast.

u catch the mouse in the bottle, then kill it in your own way. FUCK THE RODENTS. i had one eating something next to my bed one night i reached under my pillow, grabbed my knife and stabbed the little cunt right through the torso. he didnt know what had fucking hit him.

Can't post links but look up Mousehunt 2 by Andyzoob

Don't get me wrong, its a great idea. But you're going to have to add about 2 foot onto your bottle length to be sure to keep him in. A fall like that would probably hurt the mouse, defeating the purpose.

my bottle was 8", and the mouse about 2". Worked fine.

Sorry, couldn't post for a while....
Once caught, if he couldn't jump straight out, he would jump against the top wall, knocking the bottle over and then would get on top of the bottle for extra height and jump out of the trash can. They are so quick and smart it is unbelievable.
goodwinco 5 years ago
they are smart, but they can't invent tools, which is the part of the brain required for that. all they are equipped with is the ability to jump and learn from association. i watched my captor for a while, and he proved it.

The difference between store-bought and wild is like retarded humans vs. Einstein Superman. Seriously. I would imagine you would be lucky to even get a wild mouse to go in that bottle because they are so timid.

I have no experience with wild mice to answer.
But if you go to this big house in the country you were talking about: why not trying to use our trap once and report to us, whether it worked or not?! Would be great for us - regardless the outcome of the experiment, because then we will have facts.

@gliesche i modified a mouse trap so it wouldn't kill it but contain it

Thanks for the comment!

It's whether or not the mouse can jump through that little hole at the top of the bottle and climb out.
verminjerky 1 year ago
@gliesche You know what might help here? Something sticking down into the hole, inward, (like maybe some wire or something?) so that the mouse can crawl in easily, but jumping out would be nearly impossible.
verminjerky 1 year ago
you drop him into a box 20" or deeper, or a trash can.

thats smart

Wow that's super cool. That is great thinking there! no harm to the mouse!
Is that a pet mouse in the video becuase it looks different to the brown shorter house mice ive seen.
krisshek 5 years ago
