Yes, this movie was really great and I was very disappointed watching its remake BUT I still prefer concept and idea in FutureSport (1998)

Holland, as a team, watched Rollerball before the final.

Their coach said to them at half time: "Game???! This was never meant to be a game!!"

Houston's strip is also orange like Holland's. (and both team names begin with the letters "Ho")

In Rollerball, as in football, the human condition is laid bare for all to see. A constant struggle to score just one goal.

I read how the producers thanked the people where it was filmed in Germany by staging a real game with the original rules using all the pro skaters from the movie. That would have been cool to see!

The rules are actually pretty strict. Hold ball in air at all times, biker must only be used in a supporting role etc.

Here's the message:

"Rollerball was invented to demonstrate the futility of individual effort"

And when Jonathan E, an individual beats the other team AND The Powers That Be, he refutes that assertion.

The other important message is that comfort does not equal freedom.

Tokyo were excellent - their poor passing and holes in the back four were more than made up for by their martial arts skills.

Individually they were nothing special, but as a team they were great.

If I was defensive coach, I would instruct two players to constantly hold a bike over the goalmouth so the opposition couldn't put the ball in it.

What a classic piece of great filmmaking, not to be confused with that abomination that was hatched a few years back. Great performances, awesome stunts and pills, pills, pills....

Not to mention, good ol' Shane Rimmer (how did he manage to get into so many great films?)
