I'm not bothered by the 'thematic' aspect of the bases - there are ways to justify

such, like that each base level provides certain goods. The need for the most

basic goods supercedes the need for lesser ones, BUT, if multiple people can

provide the base, the luxories become more important.

The closest I've come to playing a game like this is playing Twilight Imperium 3E and starfarers of catan.

Could you recommend other games like this with a space theme?

One in his top 10 is Cosmic Encounter, I really recomend this one. It is easy to teach, quick to play and so variable. Great stuff, look up the dice tower review or Scott Nicholsons!

I'd point folk toward the up-and-coming Eclipse for a higher-end Hex based space game. One which promises to be not as long & complex as Twilight Imperium. You can custom design your own ships, as long as you've aquired the required research technology.
