I heard this song at the beginning of the funeral of a favourite aunt. I had known the song for over 25 years but I can never hear it back again, reminding me of that. They can play it on my funeral too.
i used to listen to clear, clean recordings only, because i really didn't work hear the unnecessary background noises(such as the clapping. if only the clapping was somehow cut from this video.. sigh). However, I saw this video and now everything is different. the soft brushing sound of the broom, tingling(?) of the cans he threw, dropping the trash lid... everything is part of this music. Thank you Jostoc for uploading this awesome video, and thank you Tom for such a ____(indescribable) music.
i just found "bone machine-the operator's manual" at a flea market. its tom being interviewed for radio and talking about each song. his mind works on a different plane than everyone else'. you can tell by the way he explains things. hes really great.
I thought this song had lyrics... Title is a bit misleading.

I like this piano version only; the sax isn't creeping in and trying to annex the song

Brass ruined the album version. Audience ruined this version. It's a damn shame cause It's such a beautiful piece of music.

tom waits is what every musician should strive to be, creating originality and beauty from ones own unique points of view and from ones own soul.

I'd just watched this and said to my wife "He's got something of Charlie Chaplin in him" when I scrolled down and saw your comment. So true.

Tom knows what it is to suffer and to be alone, hungry and desperate. I don't know how or when he learned these lessons but he knows.

Painfully beautiful. First time hearing this and it is a sublime melancholy melody, set to powerful images by the legend himself

Few men can create such beauty out of typical, banal situations. Tom Waits is one of those men.
