All this argument about the use of session musicians doesn't mean anything.
As for the Beach Boys, I saw them many times from the 60s through the 90s live in concert.
They sounded great, and like the records they made, esp. in the 60s. In the 60s they could sound better than the records, both instrumentally and vocally.
The Brothers Wilson are all incredibly good-looking! Dennis is the could have been a model, Carl just made you want to kiss him, and Brian is just adorable! Al is nice looking, but I never cared for Mike. He just seemed like a jerk to me.
It was according to what year and what record we're talking about. Some records are all The Beach Boys, while some are a mix of session & the boys. Carl played on nearly everything ,if not all. Brian arranged, wrote and produced. The Beatles had George Martin for production. And who cares they're both GREAT!!
The Beachboys performed at several fourth of July cellebrations here in Philadelphia back in the mid 80's, people jammed on to the Benjamin Franklin Pkwy. te hear them, they gave a great show, to bad about Brian Wilson though.
Back then, I searched the TV Guide to catch anything the BBs did on TV. I watched this like a starstruck teenage girl watching the Beatles. It was a major event that I waited for...like a kid counting the days before Christmas. Lol. I guess I was a fan.
I grew up in the 60s. The only enlightment needed was that the Beatles were great....but way overrated....and the BBs way underrated. As far as musicianship and production, the BBs were clearly superior.
Oropher, the Beatles also used session instrumentalists, too- for instance, Billy Preston played keyboards on many recordings, notable Lady Madonna, even tho Paul was an excellent pianist; Eric Clapton was playing lead on While my guitar gently weeped, etc. The Beach Boys were excellent musicians, with the exception of Mike. Denny also played piano in later recordings.
clapton wasn't a session player, george asked him to play lead on this song he wrote because he felt then the rest of the band would take it seriously, and preston didn't play on lady madonna, he only played on the let it be album, and there he was brought in because the beatles wanted to record the album live in studio, without overdubs, so they needed someone to play organ, because even macca couldn't play bass AND piano at the same time.
well, the boys all were good instrumentailsts, but nothing special, and they almost never played on record, while the beatles always played on record everything by themselves.
and especially danny was a steady, but in no way great drummer, that's why you mostly here hal blaine and carol kaye from 63/64 onwards.
Oropher, your comments are good; the Beach Boys were noted for their harmonies, which the Beatles could never attain, and yes, the Beatles did do most of their instrumental work. However, I would put Carl Wilson and Al Jardine up there, they both were excellent guitarists. Watch the Lost Concert video, where you can see key changes and playing in Ab, which is difficult. I have to admit, tho, that George Harrison is excellent. Oh, and Hal Blaine would blow Ringo out of the water!
no, ringo is the man, he's up there in drum heaven with Bonzo, Moon and co.
then listen to this boy, she loves you, because and you'll see that the beatles were also directly after the beach boys the best in harmonizing, but in contrast to the beach boys they could also rock out like the stones.
Sorry, Oropher, but Ringo couldn't even shine Hal Blaine's drumsticks. I read where Paul had to go back to the studio to play drums over Ringo's mistakes. I love the Beatles, but the Beach Boys were my favorite; Paul said that "God Only Knows" was the best song ever recorded, and Sgt. Peppers was heavily influenced by Pet Sounds. Of course, Rubber Soul influenced Brian to create Pet Sounds. One more thing: Denny was a girl magnet, where Ringo had to watch Paul get that honor!
ringo got as much fan post out of america as the other three combined, and paul never played over ringos mistakes, because ringo never made místakes, he plays drums on back in the ussr and dear prudence because ringo had quit the band for 2 weeks during those sessions.
Beatle pro Mark Lewisohn, who had the privilege of listening to EVERY beatles recording, even carnival of light, has said in 8 years of recording ringo (continue in next message)
there were fewer than a dozen occasions in The Beatles' eight-year recording career where session 'breakdowns' were caused by Starr making a mistake.
while denny almost never palyed on any sessions ringo never even made a mistake in 8 years, and who played drums on keith moons solo album, good ol ringo starr.
Hey, I like Ringo Starr; he even played on a Beach Boys recording, "California Calling"...but to put him in the same catagory as Hal Blaine..I think not. Paul DID have to cover Ringo's drumming on several occaisions, that has been out there for years. BTW, did you ever hear Denny's albums, Pacific Ocean Blue, and Bambu? You had better check them out. Denny's talents were lost in the shadow of Brian and Carl.
I've got to admit, you know your Beatles trivia. I guess I got some wrong info down the line about Paul covering up Ringo's drum playing. Anyways, heres some Beach Boy trivia for you to chew on: In 1967 England's version of Rolling Stone Magazine voted the Beach Boys as best band in Britain; second and third place went to the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Thanks for the info.
The beginning of "Dance Dance Dance, " was Glen Campbell on a 12 string guitar. Carol Kaye played bass starting around 1964 along with Ray Pohlman. Leon Russell played some keyboards, along with Daryl Dragon of Captain and Tennile. Brian used the best musicians in LA; why not? The recordings are legendary. Its ironic that Denny made 50 grand a week on tour, while Hal made 75 bucks an hour. Thats show biz!
i knew all that, well, this seems to be a relict of the old days, guys like elvis did this, but the 60s were dominated by bands that recorded everything by themselves, that's one of the big achievements the beatles started, in the beginning bands like the kinks had session guys, but the beatles played everything so they also wanted to do that,
it was common in those days, only bands like the dave clark five and so on used session guys at the time, stones, beatles, who, didn't
@OropherThranduil - totally untrue, session players have been there from the start, both the Stones and the Beatles frequently used session musicians, It's well known and documented. It also depended on the complexity of the music. The more complex your music gets the more musicians you need. If your music needs a small symphony orchestra you hire them rather than trying to play all the violins yourself.
but then again the Beach Boys had a very different way at producing their distinct sound from that of The Beatles and Rolling Stones, when it came to baroque pop, the arrangements of Brian trumphed
well, but then again paul made she#s leaving home, his most in production sounding like brians, song without george martin, so probably if paul wouldn
#t have george to work with he would have made more of the baroqpue pop, but then again the beach boys never had a eleanor rigby from the sound of it.
Brian had long since stopped touring by the time this footage was taken, even then he was starting to look a bit unhinged

I'm a huge fan of Dennis' music (BB and solo), but playing drums he looks like he's trying to put out a camping fire. End of discussion.

Yeah, right, and the Stones did everything before the Beatles. (irony)
please tell me who played drums on most beach boys records?
dennis wilson?
nooooooo, it was hal blaine, probably the greatest session drummer ever, but clearly NOT a beach boy.
and that's jus one mebmer of the wrecking crew brian used extensively.
while the beatles did everything by themselves, since all of the where multiinstrumentalists.
and how can be the most analysed band in music history be overrated?

Paul VENER played Drums over Ringos AND like i told you in 8 years ringo made less than a dozen mistakes in the studio.
show me a reliable source that says paul played over ringos drums, like i gave you mark lewisohn.
yeah, i like his solo albums, but he only plays piano on those albums i think, not drums, but still great albums, also love his you are so beatiful.

the beach boys also had session guys for most of the guitar, bass and drum.
the beatles and stones never used session guys for any normal rock insturmentation.
only for strings and orchestras.
that doesn't count as using session musicians.

it's simply agreed upon by most rock fans that using session guys means using them on instruments normally believed to be played by the band itself.
