@LadyJustice23 I don't think it's that critical - also you don't need to back-fill more than about 6-8 inches above the seed potatoes - when I harvested these, I had a deep empty layer of soil to remove before I got to the new potatoes
i found if you use an old wheely bin and do the same thing u get a big crop because you can controll the water going into the bin with opening and closing the lid and the wheely bins are tall but not to wide so u can put them in a small space.
I did potatoes in pots last year. They were the best I have ever tasted. The problem I had was giving them enough water. Watered first thing in the morning and then again in the evening. i think they still needed more water. Good luck with yours.
I like the fact you've recycled grow bags. I've noticed recently that many shop bought potatoes are bruised on the surface and inside. Going to grow my own so I can control the quality.
Do you know that black absorbs the sun's rays but white reflects the rays away?

How far does the greenery have to grow before you rebury it? 1-2 inches?

can you reuse the compost and bags every year? Do you buy the seed potatoes?
wantabuy 10 months ago
@wantabuy I'm re-using the bags again this year - not back-filling them up so much either this time. Yes seed potatoes are best.

Why didn't I think of that. With all the bags we use for the garden that could hold a lot of spuds. Thanks for the advice.

i did this last year and as you said the black stops the sun getting in as the potatoes that touch the sides go green with the sun.
but the black bags will still let the light in so i put one black bag in side another and this stops the sun getting in.
you put a torch up to the side of a single black bag and you'll see what i mean but two black bags and the torch want get through

Great one Rick might try this

If it was me, I would have turned them inside out.
The black would absorb the heat and you'd get spuds earlier. 5 stars as always.

Nice tip! I'll do that on my next ones :o)

You poked holes in the side of the bag mate water would need to be 2-3 deep before it comes out. (not that I have any idea)
Cheers Rick

your wireless audio device is a bit tinny, i think the zoom mic give much better sound quality, but great vid anyway. as always

I agree. The H2 was on loan at the time I made this vid so i had to use the wireless which isn't very good.
