  • I saw the crew shooting scenes in Whitechapel, back in the early 60's when I was PC384 HLat Leman St.nick.He came into the station one night when I was struggling witha drunk, who said to "Dixon" and his plain clothes detective,"you're the bastard that knocked me off last time." I Jack Warner was quite chuffed that he was taken for a real copper.Changed days.East London was a great place to be a copper in those days.

  • @owdplod mate there good and bad in all walks of live...coppers included...and you're right to a certain extent...the police have to.put up with a lot of sh*t...because people have no bloody respect for other people.

  • @colinclarke1000 Your so right. IT WAS A Different time...Society was different there was more respect..The police had backup from the public..Kids late out on the streets the police would take them home and speak to the parents..and let them know about the dangers.. It nipped it in the bud..Different world today things have got totally out of control..Prisons like a holiday camp..tvs in the cells Things will get worse

  • I learned about this from the UK's "The Office." David Brent says "Who am I, then, Dixon of Dock Green? Evening, all". Had to look that up!

  • What went wrong? you don't have be a genius to work that out- Society changed, immigration, a get rich quick culture, benefit scroungers, disrespect for hard work and honesty, no respect for law. None of those were the fault of the Police. Society gets the Police force it deserves.

  • @thetruth583 Absolutley bang on..Society has changed no fault of the police..If these scumbugs think their above the law then they get a heavy reaction from the police...The police are what the public make them...simple

  • Saturday night - Dixon of Dock Green and the Billy Cotton Band Show - happy days!

  • It's a pastiche of 'Dublin Saunter' by Noel Purcell

  • I just bought an autographed photo of Jack Warner on Ebay. Don't know if the exisiting DVD's of the show will play on my system here in Canada though. I also own my own security service here. Being an ex-pat Brit, I have decided to change our uniforms over to a dsitinctly British look.

  • Contrast this with the modern Metropolitan Police. George Dixon stood for everything that was great about the British bobby; years of experience, common sense, compassion and sound judgement. A figure who commanded respect and was known to his whole community. That was our country once. My goodness, what has happened to us.

  • I wish someone would post more episodes of Dock Green on TV.

  • He also did a lot of comedy monologues music hall style. "Claude and his Sword", "He didn't oughta a ett it". Used to have a very entertaining Lp of them.

  • Windyridge CDs have a CD of J.W's variety monologues for sale plus a treasure chest of amazing stuff from the period and before. Just google "Windyridge CDs" for details.

  • God this ages me. I remember the series well. Saturday evenings if I remember rightly. Love The Blue Lamp. I grew up in that area and remember the Met music hall and the Gaumant cinema. All gone now.

  • great tribute to jack warner

  • Thanks so much I remember this well

    Pat

  • At least the coppers in those days looked like coppers and not Thugs in uniform like these days. AND they could sing in the old days lol

  • True if you asked one the time now they would tell you to buy a watch lol

  • @jumpdance24 You are so right coppers judge everyone as criminals and have no respect for the law abiding person. They are thugs and you can planly see this when you watch the reality cop programmes and it takes 3 bobbies to hold down one person and wait for another 5 bobbies to jump on them and join in. Coppers in the old days had respect and treated people with respect and even went as far as giving you a warning for breaking the law or just a good ol' clip around the ear.

    Thanks for sharing

  • @mrhomerbojangles

What??? I'm an ordinary Bobby for WMP. Go to your local station and ask if you can enrol on the 'Ride along scheme'. It gives the public the chance to ride in the back of a patrol vehicle and see some of the abuse that police have to deal with. It's free, so before you criticize police take the chance to see what actually happens and what police have to deal with.

  • @owdplod I stand by what I say ! seeing a police officer hitting an innocent person walking by in the street with their batton and their colleagues standing thier watching, shows true to what they are ( thugs in uniforms ) and when you see a wheelchair user ( who cannot walk ) being thrown out thier wheelchair for demonstrating in what they beleave in, again it shows what they are Or the police officer who left his dogs in the car ( causing the deaths of both dogs ) I can see very clearly !!

  • @jumpdance24

Speaking as an ordinary Copper for West Midlands Police, the public will knife you as soon as look at you if they can get away with it. There is no golden age of the 50's...it's all a myth in relation to policing and thanks to the drug and ME culture that is rife today it would take a number of officers to contain one person who is out of his or her head on illegal drugs. A clip round the ear would result in assault charges being laid at the officer who did it.

  • @owdplod no doubt what you say is true ,i mean a rail guard told me recently that a colleague of his is being done for assault for gently shaking a sleeping passenger by the shoulder .But is it true that you blokes spend half your time in classrooms learning how to be PC (no pun intended)
