These boats are supposed to release with hydrostatic system (when the mechanism senses that the boat is in the water, it releases the hooks). It appears that this system failed. I wonder if everyone inside was strapped in.
In any case, it is the duty of the crew to ensure that all systems pertaining to the lifeboats are maintained and functioning.
Still have no idea what happened here... how did somebody die? it looks like a cable just snapped. None of the guys touching the lifeboat were doing anything to it, just steadying it.
@SDkoncept619 This can happen anywhere. Even in the US and with US ships. It can even happen to a cruise liner. So the saudis had nothing to do with this accident.
@MrWill1985 You're right. The Saudis had nothing to do with it. They had nothing to do with the crane machinery. They had nothing to do with the cables. They had nothing to do with the cable hooks. They had nothing to do with the construction or design of the ship or any of its systems. They had nothing to do with the lifeboat. They didn't even have anything to do with the construction helmets they're wearing.
Yep...they had nothing to do with it. That was the problem.
@MrWill1985 And since they had "nothing to do" with the invention or manufacture of anything seen in this video...predictably, they had an accident. Much like an ape playing with a loaded shotgun that he neither created nor understands.
Who would think that camel riders stuck in the 7th century would have industrial accidents? And please, for the love of Allah, don't respond with "everyone has accidents." No shit.
Free fall boats are located at the stern, and launched in a jiffy (15 seconds to operate the lever, 5 seconds to slide down) unlike enclosed ones which take about 1-2 minutes to go all the way down
you are mistaken my friend. it is the freefall lifeboat that is being abolished because it is far too dangerous to use. it is being replaced by these enclosed type lifeboats, which are davit- launched. just wanna share some knowledge. thanks!
Free falls do not have any accident record, as long as the seatbelts are put on properly. Unfortunately most seafarers are scared of the free fall ones as we have less experience on these. Oil rigs have used free fall boats for more than 2 decades now.
I've sat in free fall boats a number of times. Far safer - no issue of unhooking the falls, etc.
all lifeboats are required to be covered most new ships use freefall arrangement . But on very large ships like this somtimes davit arrangement are still being used.
RIP my condanlances to all families and fellow crewmembers .
This is truly a testement that lifeboat should really be called death´boats . Annually more people gets killed by lifeboats than are saved . The real improvment is the freefall boat as long as you dont try to recover it then its just as dangerous .
that man standing just behind the lift...did he fall overboard or get hit my the boat, or what?

No - This one is an Enclosed lifeboat.

Any source for this? I need to notify my professor who said last monday that the freefall ones are better.

Don't listen to professors; listen to operators. Those who can't do, teach.

This incident did NOT take place in Saudi Arabia in 2009.
The video is more than 3 years old! see the above video response.
(Saudi Aramco used the video only as a illustrative depiction for the real lifeboat incident they had in 2009)
