This old 4 steamers where the most beautifull ships of Steamships. So elegant and wonderfull never later ships where build. To scrapp her is very sad, but what can we do with an ironship when its time is gone ? Iron will die after it is sailing for some ten jears in the saltwater of the sea. Sorry, but this is the life ! This dreamships are all gone, but her souls are in the heaven of all seamendreams !
in fact the olympic was exactly like titanic her later years. She was refurbished and the tonnage increased. Very close to the end of her campaign she was made larger to nearly 47,000 tonns, larger than the titanic. They are pretty much the same, shame she got scrapped.
I will never wanna see an footage how they blast the plates out of the ship in the breakers yard.. and it would be very sad if the Britannic, and Titanic were also there in Southampton to wait for their final fate. But I think Britannic would like the Aquitania serving to 1950.
the last of the olympic class ocean liners and they had to scrap her. if i was the owner ill keep her as a museum after retirement then in 2012 sail her 1 more time the exact route titanic took to pay tribute on the 100th anniversary( the hell with shipping regulations today). then return her to a museum.
The Olympic can still be rebuild. I made a website (some months ago) to rebuild the RMS Olympic with cruise-ship material. She would costs then 15 million dollars. Instead of 430 million.
3:01 Olympic's colors after the deck scrapping has been vanished. :(
Many people said that Bruce Ismay tried to save the Olympic, but the only problem was: not enough money. Many people liked the Olympic in the time, she was the luxurious ship ever build same with her sisters Britannic and Titanic.
Building the Olympic costed 7 million dollars, now to the present day... 550 million dollars!!
If i were a millionaire back in the 1930's, i would have bought her, refitted her and kept her sailing for another 20 or so years and then later refurbish her as a floating hotel but still keep her traditional white star look.
It would be amazing to be on a ship so similar to the Titanic.
@SlyMax84 Olympic's funnels were collapsing in 1935. If you purchased her you should removed her funnels and rebuilded the funnels, and fixed the structure and let her sail to the present day. Olympic had ONLY two refits in her life time, that is really sad and not much..
So would I, keeping her out of the war would be kinda hard, but I'd make the navy sign a contract that they have to do cetin things to use her. I would not let anything happen to her, or let the Titanic socioty turn her into a museum, I'd make Carnavle use her as a trans atlantic ship when I died. May she RIP, I wish we could go back and save her, but shes steaming forever now in a place safe from the cutters tourch and ice.
I would be happy to help too! The scrapping of the RMS Olympic was indeed a sad day for those who appreciated it, however it DID help a lot of people who were suffering from the dreadful economy at the time. But if she wasn't scrapped and was still around today, I don't think that the Titanic Historical Society would turn her into a museum. However, it would be very hard to make her a full-time operating vessel, so constant care would be needed. So perhaps it could be a part time-job. :-)
Why not full time, she was built to the highest ability of the time, and would have to be completly over hauled in the 1970's so I see no real problems if she was in constant use. She was a big help to those people, but so was the scraping of the Maruitania. Why wouldn't they want Titanic's sister as a museum.
Well, if she was completely re-done, then of course it would be possible. But by the time she was going out of service, she was already experiencing mechanical failures.
I was saying that the only reason that they would want her as a museum would be to keep her in good condition. However, at the same time they probably wouldn't since they would have wanted to keep everything as it was.
Oh, then 30's 70's, and the next one would be now, active as long as she can make the crossing, and then shorter trips untill she could never run again.
I would keep her running, every dime she made would go to keeping her running, and laws could be gotten around because of her age, trust me, if I owned her I would keep her under steam untill it was agenst the law to operate steam. I'd try and keep her up to mpdern codes as long as she wasn;t extreamly altered.
it must look like im against the idea:P but im not:P
to run her on steam you need stokers and thats to unsafe a job now its against the law to keep workers in hot conditions like that, but 21st century im sure you could of made something to deliver coal into the fires:P
what you are forgetting though is that when she was sold for scrap, in 1935 , we had not fully got over the great depression. cunard may hava also been short of money.
If she was part time, she would not make as much of a profit, and mantaning her would cost slightly less, but still a lot, so in the long run full time would be better for her, and where could you store a ship that big if it was a part time vessel? That would cost a lot onto it self.
actual your wrong there. White star line merged with cunard and the british goverment paid 10 million becuase these two did. other wise we woudnt have cunard or white star today! Aswell olympic almost became a hotel but the person lost all his money read about it first your right not alot of demand thow
Great job :)

Olympic was 882 feet long, 92 feet wide, & was the finest ship afloat, when she made her maiden voyage on Wednesday, June 14, 1911.

Did the HMHS Britannic every meet her two sisters? most likely the Olympic?

Well I think they didn't. Maybe when the war began, when Britannic and Olympic were re-painted.

Correction: Olympic was in service until 1935 an then scrapped - finally broken up in 1937.

The Lusitania.

@PoppingSanta thats probably the RMS Britannic
hotrod101111 1 year ago
@hotrod101111 No it was the Lusitania.
The HMHS Britannic was launched in February 1914 and Titanic sank in 1912 so it could not have been (?) Britannic.

@PoppingSanta
I think it's actually the Mauretania, post world war one.

all 3 are distinctive...
Olympic: most sucessfull & favored
Titanic: Most famous & timless
Britannic: most distinctive of the trio & the greatest hospital ship of all time
