I remember the year before MLK's birthday was a holiday, my parents kept us home with them from school out of protest and respect for MLK's fight and sacrifice. When his birthday became a national holiday it was truly a triumph for all that lost their lives for the civil rights of African-Americans.
Hey everybody - I was a co-producer on this song. My greatest production to date. The thing you guys don't know is Prince paid for the video shoot. Many Thanks to God and Prince and everyone who donated their talents for the Prince of Peace.
One of the best collaborations to date. I seriously doubt if the artist of today have the ability to coexist for the greater good of songs that have a greater purpose.
@kbkrushgroove Mr. Kurtis Blow Walker, Is this song available for purchase? If so where can I purchase it? I am assuming you are the hip hop great Kurtis Blow. If so do you know where I can the song "Krush Groove" The song that was featured in the movie of the same name. That was a great song that featured many of you greats from that time period.
Wow I have mixed emotions about this video. While it gives me chills to see so many young, up and coming minority artists who became successful, I also find it very sad that 98% of them are no longer in the limelight and even more so many no longer have a career because of drugs.
Man I hate that my parents moved from Montgomery to the north, I know they did what they had to do, but when I visit every summer man am I over whelmed by the history that I should've grew up on 1st hand...Anyway this will always be 1 of my fave cuts
They used to play this every MLK Day before the announcements in elementary school, and Happy Birthday by Stevie Wonder. A true classic!!!! They should go back to playing it on the radio also.
Amigo, incrível este clipe, essa música foi uma das mais difíceis na época pra eu conseguir colocar na minha velha e boa fita cassete hehehe, incrível também como não existem comentários em portugues sobre essa musica, acho que poucos conhecem.
i can't begin to tell you all the memories and thoughts that run through my mind when i watch this video. i remember watching it on TV when i was little. now it's my tradition as an adult to watch it every year at this time. looking at all the artists here and thinking about where many of them are now...sigh...SO much has changed since then.
I just love this song and video! The message expresses Dr. Kings dream. This video takes me back to when Dr. Martin Luther King's day became a holiday which had been long overdue. It also takes me back, vividly, to the time and place I was when I first saw the video.

This is a beautiful tribute to Dr. King on the r&b and hip hop tip. Check out all the artist some of them were so young, to bad we cant bring back dem dayz. Open up a window, let the love shine everyday in your life, yours and mine.
R.I.P. Jam Master Jay n Teena Marie. Love Run DMC, New Edition, Whitney Houston, Kurtis Blow, Fat Boys, Grand Master Flash, El Debarge, Menudo, Stacy Latisaw, Stephanie Mills, Kool n Gang (JT). I think named majority of them. Remember when it first came on BET.
What a Song! Song's back in the day's had a cause. Honoring Dr. King were these great artists. El DeBarge, Whitney Houston, Stacy Lattisaw, Lisa Lisa with Full Force, Teena Marie, Menudo, Stephanie Mills, New Edition, James "J.T." Taylor,Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Run–D.M.C., Whodini
Teena Maria,El Debagre,Whitney Houston,Stephanie Mills,Menudo,New Edition,The Fat Boys, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam/w Full Force...and the list goes on. This video now makes me a little sad because so many in this video are no longer with us. Great memories for a very special DAY.
Wow, watching this video like 25 years later really makes me appreciate every artist. Only those who really wanted to be a part of this tribute participated...blacks, whites and hispanic. The idea of a MLK holiday was a divisive issue in public opinion. However, the naysayers did not persuade any of these artists. Kudos to them all...
I had this on tape a LONG time ago. I recorded it from the local AM station (WIZS) when they used to play rap music at night time. It popped i my head an sure enough I found it. How cool is that! :)
