There are a lot of layers to this song and ways it can be interpreted. I always figured it was more of a first-person song as he says "I'M not afraid of the price I pay." But he also references some unknown "him", as in "I'm sure you must have seen him." So Trever's comment about "helping someone you care about through a tough time" does make sense. For me personally, this song has always reminded me to find strength and courage in tough times.

To my shock and pleasure, he wrote me back, but his reply was extremely vague and said something about "It's basically about helping someone you care for through a tough time" and he added that he didn't want to say too much so as to take away from other people's interpretation of it.
