Rubiconxj - the bidders are rescue groups AND other puppy mill breeders who are looking for breed stock. Don't be fooled - many of the "loving" families who buy these poor dogs end up giving them up to shelters because they needed rehabilitation first... most of these mill dogs are not fit for regular family life unless that person is familiar with what it takes to get a dog acclimated.

I've been to a lot of stock auctions and here they have water, fodder (usually hay good quality hay) and shelter. Livestock arent treated in a disrespectful way or inhumanely; its simple doesnt make fiscal sense to play fast and loose with animals that can sometimes be worth many thousand dollars. I know a lot of farmers who treat their livestock better than their children (not that they mistreat their kids, they just dont pamper them as they would a $14k cow, strange but true)

As long as dogs are considered livestock and under the jurisdiction of the USDA and it's Puppy Mill regulations, then it will not stop.

Everyone needs to lobby the legislators of their states and congressmen to change the laws so that dogs are not considered 'livestock' that can be raised and treated in this way.

blaming the USDA for these kinds of things is a lot like blaming the cops for every drunken driver that hits someone. you can't be in every place at all times, and when they are there, it's a hostile situation (notice the people cheering when the inspector was driven out). it's a thankless, underpaid, crappy gov't job. blame the people that drive the market - those that insist on "purebred" dogs, regardless of the quality or horrible source.

Its the AWA (Animal Welfare Act) and USDA that set the minimum standards for puppymills, and the auctions etc. They damn well better police what happens! They have set the bar so low that its inhumane in many instances. They made that bed, now they have to lie in it and we have to watch from the outside mostly helpless to stop or even change what goes on 'legally'. There was once a puppymill where I live - they got assholed out of town and out of business. National TV exposure helped a lot too.

What I mean is that the auctioneer comes in to do a speedy job. ie, get them out of these horrible conditions as soon as possible. It seems to me the auctioneer is the least to blame in the process. They usually go to other puppy millers. Sometimes rescue people buy the dogs if they can, but almost all of the dogs go from one puppy mill to another -- sometimes being sold over and over again at different auctions throughout their lives.

Most caring breeders wont put dogs together that wont get along. Also the usda law states that the dog must have twice the amount of room to stand, turn and sit easily. If there isnt, something is being violated by puppymillers!!

Also most breeders wont take pups away from the mother unless the mother has weaned them. There are a few bad breeders, but there are some caring ones too (like those who raise them in their house!).

The USDAs minimum requirements for dog housing at puppymills is only that the cage be 6 inches longer than the dog (from base of tail, not tip) and 6 inches higher, and the height/length squared to calculate floorspace. That is definately NOT twice the size of the dog sorry. And if the USDA was so concerned that dogs are able to sit, stand and move freely they would ensure that these hellholes not only had plans on paper for excercise areas, but that the cretins actually built and used them.

When we used to have a kennel, we built it to where each dog had 4 times the room to run and move. I guess I thought we got this out of the USDA rules. YIKES! If they ok crowding the dogs that much, then they need a major change in legislation!! Wow.

I had a dog that I adopted from a "breeder" in Ohio. The dog was very sick and had numerous health problems, including severe hip dysplasia. I had to have this dog put down. She was scared to death of people. God only knows what this "breeder" did to my dog. I have not adopted another dog since being I am still very upset about this entire situation. The large chain pet stores in the US don't even sell dogs. In fact, they often have animal rescue groups come in for adoption drives. It's the small independent shops that sell dogs.

A good breeder will insure the dog you buy from them for up to one year against hereditary problems. Also any dog you buy from a breeder should have had a veterinarians health certificate, showing what tests were performed.

Thank you so much for helping the public become aware of the horrible truth behind the cute little pups in the clean little pet shops across america. Often times it seems like an insurmountable task in educating the public on pet shop puppies and where they come from. My heart absolutely breaks in the realization that these dogs are treated so inhumanely, and suffer so terribly, all for the love of money.

I HAVE a dog that a Rescue got at one of these auctions. He is STILL fearful of humans after being free for over a year. What in God's name did these people do to him???!!! When I look in his eyes, I cry over the harm that was done to him.

This is completely disgusting. I am not surprised that some are Amish dog auctions. It is a bit shocking to me that they would treat animals this way. Nice example the adults are making for kids. EVERYONE involved w/these auctions are sick. Let's put them in a 2x2 cage & see how they are in a day, let alone for the rest of their lives. These make me question the idea of God. If I offend you, too bad.... My heart is broken in to a million pieces now knowing that these exist. I feel helpless.

That is part of the cycle of misery that people who shop in petstores support. All animals are affected, not just dogs.

Boycott petstores that sell any type of animal, even if you are purchasing other products. By boycotting, we can all make this a thing of the past.

Adopt from shelters only!

Adopt from shelters/pounds, but not from Humane Societies. That way you know where your money went.

Adopt from reputable breeders, not puppymillers. Good breeders have good references.

The Humane society in my county is cleaner than the non kill dirty ass help shelter. In my opinon its better to adopt from a kill shelter they mostly only adopt out well behaved animals. I think no kill shelters should be shut down they adopt out non healthy, non socialized, dog who really need put down.
