When Dave Edmunds did it, he did it in key of E and could hit all the high notes easily. Bruce also has a rendition of it in E on youtube and can't hit those notes. It shows too. Here he does it in D and it sounds great--he can hit those notes properly. No straining.
this was recorded in '79 by springsteen(river out take) and to quote the man himself "i played this song for dave edmunds backstage in london in'80 and he made a great record of it." so dave played what he heard and had a hit. but bruce is still best. see comment by peregrinusnoctis below
That song reminds me of a girl named Jackie Reynolds, who is the new wife of karate star Jason "Cruel Intentions" O'Brien, whom she met after she told him she liked his karate suit.
He wrote this for Dave Edmunds. You can't help but wonder, cos DE did it first, if it was how Bruce wanted it portrayed, and that he's doing it this way cos of Dave's version. (am i making ANY sense?)
Only reason I'd think that isn't the case is because there are live versions of this song with Bruce playing it very similar to the Edmunds version. All the same, I think this version is miles better.
Good point! Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, and Elvis Costello have always mined outside writers for good stuff, to great effects.
I've never much cared for Bruce Springsteen's voice and arrangements (personal preferences), but I've always admired the guy for his great tunes. Carole King, Willie Nelson, Springsteen, Prince--nice to see great songwriters sharing the fruits of their incredible talents.
Also, although I prefer Dave Edmund's version of this tune, I've always thought that the definitive version of any tune is the songwriter's original demo (or produced) version. Edmunds is English rockabilly, Springsteen is American rock 'n' roll. Nice differences!
--agreed, in that the composer had a certain idea in mind, it's the more authentic expression, if you will. that said, sometimes another artist can provide an interpretation that is superior, and for me, that's true of this. i think DE's released version is better, but it is a Springsteen vision of the world.
Anyone know where i can find tabs? They all seem to be removed on the normal websites.

I like Edmunds version better! It has a lot more punch to it! But I like this version too! 2 of my favorite artists who know how to rock n roll.

This is the original and it has a lot more punch and power than Edmunds cover. Edmunds voice and band sound thin in comparison.
