i have been hand feeding 3 magpies for about 2 yrs now, they love fresh mince the most and surprisingly in breeding season ive seen them attack people and dogs but they have never attacked me
had two friends with one all their kids where still at home they can peck at you when you least xpsect it. This one was quite tame but viscous at times the clapping of the beak my gosh good video
hhaha cute, i have a family of 4 that i feed daily, they have a baby that is still to shy to come down and take it from my hand but hes getting tamer :)
haha thats mad , me and my mate wuld always walk up to the takeaway and get sum hot chips then walk down to the park and have a feed and there was a magpie we named limpy cauz one foot was fucked and only used one so we started feeding it chips , he was around for a good 8 months i reckon , r.i.p limpy i think he passed away :(
They are cute birds! They are very intelligent too! Very cute video. :) It's cute how the guy is talking to them. hehe! :) We have them here, I like to see them why they fly by.
Where I live (in America) we don't usually get many magpies, but I have 2 in my tree, which is odd! We used to have 3 but the third died of injuries. I found him outside in my lawn dead and I was depressed because the way I found him. He was so peaceful!! So from that day, I have always loved magpies. I feed the remaining magpies dried cat food and seeds. They are the prettiest and cutest birds ever!!
@ElvisLivesUpstairs No, weed is illegal in Australia. It is slightly decriminalised in some states (often resulting in warnings given before arrest/fines) but its definitely not allowed.
They're awesome birds, they can totally tell the difference between food & fingers. I've never been bitten. All it took was a few tries with some meat scraps to get the Magpie I know to hold candles in the birthday video I made (click on my user name to check it out). They're pretty easily trained birds, but it does take a while to get their trust...

I used to have breakfast outside (toast with vegimite on it) and magpies used to do this exact same thing to me. I never eat my crusts so I'd give it to them.
@PistonHonda319 Magpies aren't always friendly, they often will attack people who are in the vicinity of their nests in spring time, just look up "Magpie swooping" on here to see some examples of it.
Most Australian animals are shy, but some of the larger animals such as kangaroos, possums and magpies will quickly lose their fear of humans if you start feeding them regularly. Most are not this tame, but I have seen a magpie enter a gym to be hand fed bread by the staff.
@Masteruny Its actually not hard at all. If you show them aggression thats what you will get in return. but if you show them kindness, you can make a friend for life. Kindness plus a bit of food and you could probably put one in your pocket :D
There are 5 wild maggies who visit me and the youngest has just started taking food from my hand, but thats nothing compared to this! What are you feeding them?
@ducatijim cool! I sometimes feed that to the Magpies who visit me. there are around 12 all up now as their new offspring come along as well. They are nice but the babies are bloody noisy and they can make a lot of mess! I also feed them bits of cheese, but try not to overdo it as its important that they continue to know how to fend for themselves. One of the new offspring is also taking food from my hand now. they like my Gum tree, and I love it how they get angry at the horrible neighbours :)
i love magpies, theres nothing better tahn their baubling sound! and theyre so sweet and intelligent! not to mention friendly... and if u dont wanna get swooped by them, b careful around the trees they nest in at breeding season.... theyre only protecting their youngs as best they know how!
man everyone complains about magpies swooping, it is annoying BUT I personally have never been actually HIT by a magpie's swoop. and also they only ever swoop me when I ride past, AND when I have a helmet. not just a helmet, not just riding, but only when I have a helmet AND I'm riding through
furthermore, I've only been swooped about 1 day per week for one season a year for 2 years, that's it
it's actually fun to be swooped, because you watch for the shadow and whip your head around last second
ugh I hate magpies, I remember when I walked to school for a whole month everytime I walked past that tree about 3 of em would swoop me, guess they had a nest there, not my fault aswell coz the tree was next to the footpath
my dad has a pet magpie that he had brought up from since it was a little chick becuase it had a injured wing and its about 12 years old. As great as the bird is, it only likes my dad and my step mum cos they were the ones that raised it. I just moved in to his house and his magpie absolutely hates me, like want to kill me hatred. But the thing is i have done anything wrong to piss it off except come into its home, any advice on how to get this bird to enjoy my company? please i want my eyes!
I just found a baby magpie in my yard. To young to go off on his own. Your Austrailian mags are quite the charmers. I like how they sing. Here in the US they just squack!! LOL
@upcycle - You are spot on, birds evolved from dinosaurs. I'm pretty sure though I could be wrong, but birds are the only surviving species that evolved from dinosaurs.
@sha1indriaharam - It takes time and I wouldn't say the birds are friendly, they just trust this guy. They would probably bite if he tried to touch them. My neighbour has been feeding this one pair of magpies for over 8 years. They went on holidays once and the birds showed their displeasure about missing out on their daily meat by attacking them when they got home. So, when they go away now I feed them, it's pretty cool, they can catch a piece of meat while flying!
My school has loads of magpies who often hang around early in the morning, when I'm one of the only students there. I love listening to their beautiful singing while I wait for school to start.
Aren'y they lovely! We have maggies around our place who come for afternoon tea. They usually get the leftovers from the kids' lunchboxes, and sometimes some bread from the fridge. They let me hand-feed them, but they're frightened of the rest of the family.
You can get them surgicaly sexed by a vet, but that is invasive and stressful for the bird. Otherwise you have to wait untill the bird gets its' adult plumage. The male will have a perfectly white nape (back of the neck), just as these birds do. If the bird is a female, the nape will be mottled with light grey feathers.
I hope you look after this sweet bird and give it all the nutrition and loves it wants.
i dont think the magpie would like someone else to touch it lol.
We give it a certon diet which includes all of the nutriants it needs n water lol.
soon it'll be flying :D it was kinda knocked back in its growing because it got thrown outa its nest, and its other siblings where dead, so i kinda took it home lol. It can be a pest n very demounding lol
Amazing! Very cool. Do they come to visit often? They seem like they've gotten to know you somewhat and probably come around because they know they'll get fed. hehe
I got pecked on the back of my head by a magpie today whilst i was riding to the shops, then it chased me 20 or so metres down the road. theyve got the sharpes fucking beaks, i wonder if i got brain damage, haha.
OMG dude i been gettin STALKED by one...first it just used to swoop me at the intersection, NOW IT FUCKIN FOLLOWED ME TO MY FRIENDS HOUSE AND WAS WAITING OUTSIDE WHEN I LEFT! AHHH WTF DO I DO!? WTB SLINGSHOT
stormlah, they usually swoop at the back of your head. I worked on one by sitting still until I knew he was coming, then turned my head to look at him as he got close. He's swerve away. After a while I took some meat scraps and sat and waited. Took a while, but he would come close and collect them. Never got him to eat out of my hand, but we came to an arrangement where he only swooped on everyone else and left me alone. :-)
They are cheeky. Oddly, Australian magpies aren't corvids like American and European magpies, which accounts for the difference in appearance. They are just as cheeky as the magpies we have in America, though!
If your in a city try contacting your local animal controll department, I hired a cat trap for 2 weeks in 2005 and to this day no-one in my street lets their cats out at night. Just drop the animal off at the pound and they had to pay $80 retrieval fee to get their pet back. Felt a little sorry for the cats but not as much as i did for the local birdlife.
Australian "magpies" aren't corvids, like the mapgies in North America and Europe, which is why your magpies caw like crows--they're related. Evidently the Australian magpies were named after magpies because of their black-and-white plumage (and possibly cheekiness). :-D
For a few days a pair of Magpies have been showing up at our house. They come right up to us and let us hand feed them. Its really cool.I thought they would get scared.
You've heard of someone who has had their scalp pecked until bloody? That would be an unfortunate event. I wouldn't worry about Magpies. They can get very protective of their nests and swoop quite aggressively, but I've only had that happen to me a couple of times in my life... Other than that they're a delight to have around.
Yup. Guy was riding his bike through the forest, in a spot they were apparently nesting. They pecked at his head and he ended up bleeding a whole lot.
In Sydney, NSW, my wife and I can hand feed two adult (female) Magpies, but their respective pair of juveniles are still too timid to take food from the hand. There is occasionally a male (the father?), but is even more timid.
Their song is melodious, and quite varied, but the squawks of the chicks is definitely a pain as their appetite is insatiable, when Mum is feeding and it is easy to let her feed them! They are typical mothers though.
My brother threw rocks at a magpie nest when we were kids, then everyday after school as he walked home after that they would attack his head pecking at it. Good on ya magipie's avenge your children. take that Kyle! Haha he deserved it the little twat. Magpie's are awesome!
aww i love magpies we have about 8-10 magpies taht coe to our house 1 can talk a bit he says 'hello boy' woofs like a dog and sounds like a black bird he so cute =3
There's been tests done that show that magpies fed and used to humans dont' see them as much of a threat, and tend to swoop less. This however can also prove problematic when the magpies see you as their 'flock' and swoop everyone else that comes by, as they see them as the threat instead!
It's all about balance too: you don't want them becoming too dependant upon you, but usually by adulthood magpies are dependant enough to fend for themselves, and interact with humans less.
Top stuff, we feed our locals magpies occasionally with a bit of mince and they love it. Babies come down for a nibble as well. They are one of the most beautiful birds and they sing one of the most beautiful songs - great to hear them when waking of a morning.
here's how, wait for one to come to your backyard get some bread or raw mince meat and slowly make your way outside and crouch down. it will take them a while to get used to you so just stretch your arm out and flick the meat or bread close to them and they will come for it, keep it up and they will eventually hand feed off you
That's fantastic mate. I've got a tame blackbird, but nothing comes close to the personality and warble of magpies. Brilliant!!! And don't listen to the people telling you not to tame them- they're just jealous.
ahah, I just love this video :)

Good to have them for all the offall... LOL...
And swooping on ... that is just nature ...who will not defend home when feel threatened.; I will..
Respect them and let live....
I read in the paper that by removing some particular feathers they will be unable to swoop.. those feathers will grow beack in time...

How old is your maggie? What are you feeding it and how often?
Chicks often identify with their main carer, and won't trust anyone else. Will you update me on this birds progress?
There are many reasons why birds will abandon a nest,
A) if there isn't enough food, parents will abandon a clutch so they can breed sucessfully next season;
B) the nest was diseased, or
C) the parents were topped because they were swooping people to protect their nest.
Cheers for caring for this sweet bird!

If you feed them they will stop attacking you. It's better for you if they see you as a friend and not a threat.

OMG dude i been gettin STALKED by one...first it just used to swoop me at the intersection, NOW IT FUCKIN FOLLOWED ME TO MY FRIENDS HOUSE AND WAS WAITING OUTSIDE WHEN I LEFT! AHHH WTF DO I DO!? WTB SLINGSHOT
stormlah 2 years ago
stormlah, they usually swoop at the back of your head. :-)

Magpies serioulsy aren't scared of anything.... they'll simply walk up and just eat form your hand without caring what will happen to them

wow they r amazing birds i love there song its very Australian sound reminds me of home and away. or magpies dont sing like that.
lorrie79 2 years ago
They are cheeky. Oddly, Australian magpies aren't corvids like American and European magpies, which accounts for the difference in appearance. They are just as cheeky as the magpies we have in America, though!

Does anyone know what kind of bird did that final chirp at 2:30?
engeladam409 2 years ago
I'm no expert, but i'm pretty sure its a currawong.

True - unless you hold a DMP (I am in QLD) possum traps are illegal. Keep up the good work!!!
myrmecia1977 2 years ago
If your in a city try contacting your local animal controll department, I hired a cat trap for 2 weeks in 2005 and to this day no-one in my street lets their cats out at night. Just drop the animal off at the pound and they had to pay $80 retrieval fee to get their pet back. Felt a little sorry for the cats but not as much as i did for the local birdlife.

HUGE beaks!! beautiful birds though!!...ok when i was typing that i was saying it in an aussie accent in my head XD

wow, that's so amazing. Our magpies here in Canada wont go near you and they just caw like crows. I love your birds. haha!!
mecoffeeaddict 2 years ago
Australian "magpies" aren't corvids, like the mapgies in North America and Europe, which is why your magpies caw like crows--they're related. Evidently the Australian magpies were named after magpies because of their black-and-white plumage (and possibly cheekiness). :-D

Awe how cute, I wish I could feed the birds like that, magpies in this country are different to that though x

American (Unfortunately) here, Why is it that I only hear horrid stories about Magpies attacking people and pecking at scalps until bloody?
BrianTotse 2 years ago
You've heard of someone who has had their scalp pecked until bloody? That would be an unfortunate event. I wouldn't worry about Magpies. They can get very protective of their nests and swoop quite aggressively, but I've only had that happen to me a couple of times in my life... Other than that they're a delight to have around.
mickgolubovic 2 years ago
Yup. Guy was riding his bike through the forest, in a spot they were apparently nesting. They pecked at his head and he ended up bleeding a whole lot.
I suppose Magpies aren't as evil as I've heard.

Bet he doesn't go anywhere without a helmet now though.

Magpies have kind of reminded me of Maggie May myself.
fuckinqueenslander 2 years ago
In Sydney, NSW, my wife and I can hand feed two adult (female) Magpies, but their respective pair of juveniles are still too timid to take food from the hand. There is occasionally a male (the father?), but is even more timid.
Their song is melodious, and quite varied, but the squawks of the chicks is definitely a pain as their appetite is insatiable, when Mum is feeding and it is easy to let her feed them! They are typical mothers though.
And they can recognise the car arriving home!

aww i love magpies we have about 8-10 magpies taht coe to our house 1 can talk a bit he says 'hello boy' woofs like a dog and sounds like a black bird he so cute =3
s3xymoose 3 years ago

Good stuff! I love magpies, I wish I could get That close to them.
ant1991331 3 years ago
here's how, wait for one to come to your backyard get some bread or raw mince meat and slowly make your way outside and crouch down. it will take them a while to get used to you so just stretch your arm out and flick the meat or bread close to them and they will come for it, keep it up and they will eventually hand feed off you
jmfdrmustang 3 years ago
That's fantastic mate. I've got a tame blackbird, but nothing comes close to the personality and warble of magpies. Brilliant!!! And don't listen to the people telling you not to tame them- they're just jealous.

why dont you feed them a 4.10
