@Dudeboy4000, sure, purchase for thousands of dollars, something weighing thousands of pounds to move one person around, burning a fuel that pollutes the atmosphere and will eventually run out or become so expensive as to be impractical. If it works for you, fine. It doesn't work for me.
@freddotu Don't forget to mention that the sedentary lifestyle enabled and symbolized by the private automobile has statistical links to an array of debilitating and life shortening ailments similar to those caused by smoking tobacco: cancer, heart disease, et. al.

@fattpieceofcrap, there's your answer. You don't get it. I can't change that and don't expect to do so. Most drivers to whom I speak don't get it either. It's a failure of the driver education system in this country.

@freddotu I suppose this is just another case of "to each his own". @eatmytool1, and for people who want to use a bike for transportation, there's Cycling Savvy classes (two Vs, not a W) or LAB classes, to allow those riders to learn how to ride safely with those idiotic drivers. @TheSestren, I ran into a similar situation a month or two ago, with a police officer on the other side of the intersection. He did nothing, even when I brought it to his attention. That particular municipality had been threatened with a lawsuit for their unfounded actions against me, so it's likely the police force do not have warm feelings in their hearts for me.
why not pull on to the shoulder instead of taking up an entire lane for your little argument, for some one who preaches that roads are public commodity you sure were being awfully selfish in this video
@dynastarman, don't you think that eight lanes is enough for anyone? Four lanes in each direction allows for all the other motor vehicle operators to change lanes, but this clown doesn't seem to understand how to safely operate a multi-ton vehicle.
@dynastarman The shoulder is only used for emergency. Look it up. It's also pointed out there are 4 lanes and other cars are able to overtake the cyclist very safely. This truck chose to drive straight at the cyclist and blast the horn all because he's too lazy to overtake. I suggest you watch the video again.

@leapoffaith20, I often wonder how a driver can be in a hurry and yet argue with me. Should something of this nature happen again, it would be better for me to call the police and let them argue with the driver.
Naughty, naughty. You know that you shouldn't be posting someone's personal information like that without permission. That's against YouTube's policy and could get you banned!!!
@freddotu Nope, I think you had better do some research my friend. Youtube has historically removed videos even for having people's license plate numbers. It's public knowledge for reporting to police, not for broadcasting to the world.
I feel your pain. I have to put up with a lot of idiot motorists as well. I ride through the Lake Norman area, just north of Charlotte NC. There are plenty of cyclist in the area, and there are also a lot of idiots behind the wheel and gas pedal. Most recently, I had to deal with a passenger of a Tahoe who thought the bicycle was for the sidewalk.... and there have been times before where I have had people yell out obscenities at me... and have had garbage thrown at me.
What is the best way to ride down a narrow 2 lane roadway with a 25mph speed limit. there are alot of 2 lane roads in Ohio, and in Toledo particular. Should I ride dead center, more towards the Right or pull off and let every car by?
@CycleMan2200, narrow 2-lane roads are a challenge. If riding too far to the right results in drivers attempting to pass you without changing lanes, you should move more to the center of the lane.
Some states require that the driver of a slower vehicle pull over, when safe, if five or more cars back up behind him.
You have to weigh your safety (high priority) compared to other driver's convenience.
@freddotu I'm also kinda worried about impeding traffic and the police pulling me over. If you check out one of my video's entitled ''Cop pulls me over for riding in the road'' I got pulled over for riding on a narrow 2 lane road I normally commute on. Ohio laws aren't very specific about taking the lane, since not many people cycle here. They only say ride as far to the Right as practicable, not saying anything about substandard lanes.

Especially note 4511.25 and 4511.55 where reference is made to safety and lane width.
@CycleMan2200, I found that link by using Google and searching for Ohio Bike Laws, but then found another link with the specific statutes. You could try a search for 4511.25 and/or 4511.55, but the state site has the best interpretation I've seen for placement in a lane. Another good reference would be to search for Ohio Street Smarts.
@freddotu I looked at the 4511.25 statue, and it tells me nothing about the ''Substandard lane width''. I don't understand. Other state's bicycle laws state that If the lane is under 14 feet in width it's not sharable. Ohio laws don't seem to specify that for some reason. I'm interested in the Toledo area bicycle laws, in which i can't seem to find.
@CycleMan2200, in the state of FL and TX, the minimum is specified as 14 feet. In some cases, even 14 feet is too narrow for safe sharing. I ride on some 13 foot wide four lane roads and won't surrender my own safety. Drivers see me and change lanes and everyone continues.
There are two sections of two-lane roads in my area that are probably 15-16 feet wide and I have moved over to allow backed up traffic to proceed. I'll do it on heavily traveled four lane 15 foot wide lanes sometimes.
@trikebum, I had that discussion in a parking lot last year with a driver. He told me I didn't pay taxes. Yeah, right. Just because we ride bikes doesn't mean we don't pay taxes. If we paid taxes based on the damage the vehicle causes to the roadway, many car drivers could not afford to drive and would be on bikes!
@freddotu I think drivers have to wake up in this regard, For example I live in Australia population aprox 20 million. A university study found that road deaths caused primarily by motor vehicles costs the country $17 billion annually. Obesity costs us $3 Billion, Pollution from Cars costs Aprox $1.5 Billion, and the list goes on. In the USA the cost would be far greater. I think car drivers who argue for user pays should think really hard before they say this.
@KrunchyJD, I agree with you fully. I'm not sure why our (USA) culture has developed to this point, where such points are ignored or under-emphasized.
An ignorant, rude, arrogant, aggressive, visually impaired, self-opinionated and intellectually-challenged prick driving a truck as if it were a train.
Not defending this moron in any way shape or form, but I'm unclear what you were riding. Are you on a motorcycle or a bicycle? If the latter, then doesn't FL law require you to ride as far to the right as practicable? Don't get me wrong, I'm a cyclist who has no problem taking the lane when the situation warrants it. What am I missing?
@wk633, it is a bicycle, in the form of a velomobile. FL law does state as far to the right as practicable, and as these are sub-standard width lanes, that's the center of the lane. I will not ride in the shoulder area nor will I ride in a bike lane when the other traffic is running at 40-50 mph. On an eight lane roadway, I'm going to control the lane for my own safety. Other drivers are able to change lanes, and he did too.
What a moron, he likely wasn't watching, got startled and decided to take his anger at being startled out on you. Too macho and dumb to admit his mistake.
I like the guy you see after the idiot goes around you who apparently decided to wait well back with his hazard light on until you two finished up. It takes some presence of mind and patience to decide to act as a buffer to other traffic like that.
In Oregon it is illegal to use a horn except in an emergency situation. Have you posted info anywhere about your camera setup? I've thought it valuable for just this type of situation and to show legislators the problems we face.
@edgunderson, I would expect that Florida has some form of regulation regarding horn use, but it falls into that catgegory of "cop not see, cop not charge" violation.
My cams are "old technology" which has been a round for some time and so much more improved stuff out there. I'm using eBay bullet cams and ChaseCam recorders, with LAN-C remote and little else.
Ooh, I though he was going to use his truck against you or the velo, that's a big truck and an angry man!(over compensating for something tiny maybe?;-)
I notice the car/truck behind holding off then using the hazards, maybe they thought something was going to happen too!
Nice work Fred, that was very well handled by you. What a moron driver. Did you report him? Here in London there's a Roadsafe initiative by the Metropolitan Police, and you can report this sort of thing, which initiates a letter to the registered keeper of the vehicle. If there's youtube footage, they will often include a link to that footage.
This is great in that you get the driver's attention - they now see that they can no longer anonymously abuse cyclists.
@CyclingMikey, I had not considered to report him to the local constabulary, since they aren't particularly well versed on cycling laws. I had wished that one of them would have been in the area to hear the horn, though, if only to be charged with excessive noise!
What a jerk. HEY A HORN IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT YA MORON. I really don't like people like that. Makes me wish something really, really inconvenient happens to them. Nothing bad just something about as annoying as they are.
@nyarltep, I tend to avoid confrontations as much as possible, since there are no "winners" in such situations. Had the traffic light been green, I would have continued on my way and let him flip me off as he passed, but since it was a red light and the fool didn't lay off the horn until I got out, something had to be done. I wondered if he would just roll right over top of my bike, but that's a little extreme for anyone.
@dregerclock, as you know now, you caught it "under construction" before I could put the text in place. I have no helmet cam, since there's no room inside the cockpit, and the microphones on the external cameras were blasted by the truck horn and diesel noise.
@MewFushisDad, all he really had to say was "get the f**k out of the road" or "off the road". I heard him say to me that the car ahead had to swerve to avoid me, and I hadn't noticed that at the time, so I figured he was imagining things. The video bears that out, as the vehicle ahead of him performed a normal pass with plenty of room to spare. That's the usual situation on this road. I prefer to ride on this road, since it's so wide.
I wouldn't dream of driving my truck on a bicycle trail, because that would be dangerous. Just sayin'.

@CycleMan2200, the two key points I took from the statutes are:
Slow moving vehicles must remain far enough right to allow others to pass IF PASSING IS SAFE AND REASONABLE.
and, especially this one:
4511.55 - such as when the lane is too narrow for the bicycle and an overtaking vehicle to travel safely side by side.
As you noted, other states specify 14 ft minimum, OH does not.
You should not find city specific laws, only those for your state.

What am I missing?
wk633 1 year ago

It takes some presence of mind and patience to decide to act as a buffer to other traffic like that.
jrobson100 1 year ago
@jrobson100, based on the timing of the horn and the duration, he certainly saw me well enough in advance.
I'm not sure about the van with the hazard flashers. There's no reasonable explanation, unless they were together.
freddotu 1 year ago
In Oregon it is illegal to use a horn except in an emergency situation. Have you posted info anywhere about your camera setup? I've thought it valuable for just this type of situation and to show legislators the problems we face.
edgunderson 1 year ago
@edgunderson, I would expect that Florida has some form of regulation regarding horn use, but it falls into that catgegory of "cop not see, cop not charge" violation.
My cams are "old technology" which has been a round for some time and so much more improved stuff out there. I'm using eBay bullet cams and ChaseCam recorders, with LAN-C remote and little else.
There's smaller, sharper, better, cheaper now.
freddotu 1 year ago
Ooh, I though he was going to use his truck against you or the velo, that's a big truck and an angry man!(over compensating for something tiny maybe?;-)
I notice the car/truck behind holding off then using the hazards, maybe they thought something was going to happen too!
MelloVEL0 1 year ago
I probably would of kept on going. Horns don't bother me too much, unless the driver tries to get physical, then I have a real problem.

Good job Fred.. damn morons.
cmays637 1 year ago
Oh my... You just met another one who thinks he owns the road, didn't you?
lgalicki 1 year ago
Nice work Fred, that was very well handled by you. What a moron driver. Did you report him? Here in London there's a Roadsafe initiative by the Metropolitan Police, and you can report this sort of thing, which initiates a letter to the registered keeper of the vehicle. If there's youtube footage, they will often include a link to that footage.
This is great in that you get the driver's attention - they now see that they can no longer anonymously abuse cyclists.
CyclingMikey 1 year ago
@CyclingMikey, I had not considered to report him to the local constabulary, since they aren't particularly well versed on cycling laws. I had wished that one of them would have been in the area to hear the horn, though, if only to be charged with excessive noise!

Where'd the truck driver get his license, from a cracker-jack box?
alexwarrior1 1 year ago
What a jerk. HEY A HORN IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT YA MORON. I really don't like people like that. Makes me wish something really, really inconvenient happens to them. Nothing bad just something about as annoying as they are.
BungaEBiker 1 year ago
Fred you are the man, but I would advise against getting out of your velomobile and confronting drivers. I know he made you mad.
nyarltep 1 year ago
@nyarltep, I tend to avoid confrontations as much as possible, since there are no "winners" in such situations. Had the traffic light been green, I would have continued on my way and let him flip me off as he passed, but since it was a red light and the fool didn't lay off the horn until I got out, something had to be done. I wondered if he would just roll right over top of my bike, but that's a little extreme for anyone.
freddotu 1 year ago
Sheesh, what a moron. Are you going to report this guy?
jonredhornet 1 year ago
oh... I did not have annotations on to see the comments. Got it now.
dregerclock 1 year ago
@dregerclock, as you know now, you caught it "under construction" before I could put the text in place. I have no helmet cam, since there's no room inside the cockpit, and the microphones on the external cameras were blasted by the truck horn and diesel noise.
freddotu 1 year ago
Holy Crap Fred! What was his freaking problem?
What did he have to say for himself?
MewFushisDad 1 year ago
@MewFushisDad, all he really had to say was "get the f**k out of the road" or "off the road". I heard him say to me that the car ahead had to swerve to avoid me, and I hadn't noticed that at the time, so I figured he was imagining things. The video bears that out, as the vehicle ahead of him performed a normal pass with plenty of room to spare. That's the usual situation on this road. I prefer to ride on this road, since it's so wide.
freddotu 1 year ago
too bad you don't have a helmet cam with sound pickup. I did not see captions... are you still in the process of adding them?
